Xbox Live users put in millions of hours a year
More than Playstation 3 users
By Dave Neal
Tue Oct 15 2013, 09:53

REDMOND GAMES TOWN CRIER, Major Nelson has revealed how much time gamers have spent on Xbox Online in the last year.

Nelson was posting about Xbox Live, the paid for access system to multiplayer action and teenage shouting, and how your friends list will work on the new Xbox One.

While that is interesting, the number of hours spent playing games online on the Microsoft Xbox 360 is eyebrow raising. Nelson claimed that it is more time than people spend playing on the free to play online Sony Playstation 3 (PS3).

"First, we want to thank you for choosing and for spending more time with us. In the last 12 months, we delivered more than 20 billion hours of gaming and entertainment on Xbox, over 17 [percent] growth over the previous year," he said.

"We're proud and humbled to be the top online gaming service - according to NPD's August 2013 Online Gaming report, close to 50 [percent] more online console gamers use the Xbox 360 for playing online than the Playstation 3."

The numbers were not broken down, so we cannot say how much of this time was spent playing games or watching content through streamers like Blinkbox, Crackle and Netflix.

Nelson said that he will release more information about Live this week, calling it a "Week of Xbox Live".

Kicking this off, he told us that the Xbox One will let people have as many as 1,000 friends, and they will be able to follow other players.

Nelson said that this means that you will be able to stay on top of clips, achievements and other things put out by other gamers.

Friends and followers have different settings and you can choose what information you impart to either.

"A great driver in 'Forza Motorsport 5', for example, could have a huge group of thousands or even millions of followers all tracking their performance in-game," said Rob Lehew, Xbox Live programme manager.

"Those followers can have this driver on their personal leaderboard so that they can constantly keep track of how they stack-up, and they can potentially connect online with the driver to get into a race with him."

Friends will be able to work together towards common goals, and Nelson said that games could set a weekend target of achieving a goal.

"As a nod to our stellar community, many challenges require a community to work together towards a common goal. Imagine, for example, a game releases a weekend objective that requires players to cumulatively secure an objective 'X' number of times in a three day period," said Nelson.

"And every person who participates and helps build towards the challenge's goals unlocks that Achievement and earns its reward." µ

Well Trinidad has been PSN country for sometime.

Let us see if anything changes now that Sony has gone the pay-to-play-online route like Microsoft.

Lets face it...XBL is a lot easier to set up online matches than PSN, not to mention superior chat implementation.

I'd much rather play multiplayer on XBL, because 'it just works'...full stop.
PSN is too much damn hassle.

Those numbers do not surprise me at all.

XBL IS better than PSN.
If you can't see that, well too bad.  :laughing7:
Microkia have to be doing something right if they coulda get people to buy multiple 360s after hardware failure.  XBL kept them coming back.  It was easily one of the things they got right for that last gen.

I can only see it improving with their '300,000 servers'.

burr??

It did not keep them coming back in Trinidad.

Locally, Playstations outsell xbox 10 to 1. Easily.

Like I said....we will see if the new generations evens the playing field since Playstation is now moving to a Pay To Play online model.

I suspect the freeness was the driving force behind the rabid adoption of the PS3 and by extension...PSN....in Trinidad.

Wyatt, Trinidad usage is meaningless in the grand scheme of things, worldwide xbl > psn, it's as simple as that.

I never use xbl, but I use psn, and I hate it, games for windows live on pc way better than that for match making, chat etc. and if xbl is anything like that or better, well then gg.

When meh xbox one reach go see what all the hulabaloo is about.

But cant argue with wintry facts.

^ this

Trini's are cheap. Full stop.

They're not going to spend more money to play games online so the PSN looked more attractive at the time.

On top of which, I still don't recall XBL security being breached and 77 million people's information stolen. But maybe it happened and I missed it?  (troll)

huh? Which site you guys are on????

I am less concerned with the grand scheme of things and more concerned with Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean.

There are hundreds, no....thousands of gaming sites already dedicated to the USA, Europe, Asia, etc....

Who will speak for us and our situation?

Better than that.

What about the 24day outage of PSN? I remember buying mortal and not being able to play it for a very long time....
Also having to change all my dam passwords cause they get hacked.

And to answer wyatt recent post:

Because Trinidad is PlayStation nation don't make PSN better. U can argue since everybody there, d trini community go be bigger, but from technical and functional standpoint, being ah trini don't make PSN better for u. Just makes it cheaper.  :awesome:

Even in Trinidad, XBL was better, Wyatt.

It just so happens that Trinis just didn't want to pay extra for online multiplayer.
I cant tell you how many pardners balked at paying 50 US/year...not realizing that they were getting exactly what they 'paid' for with PSN.

My only nitpick with XBL is that I'm not on it as much as I'd like.  :laughing7:

This is my point exactly.

And it has nothing to do with which service is better.

If I want to beat up my friend in Street Fighter online, I could do that for free on Playstation and PC.

I had to pay to do that on xbox.

Simple maths.

Playstation ruled the roost as a result.

I am extremely interested in seeing what happens, now that Playstation is removing that advantage.

In Trinidad, from a regional perspective....which is very important and salient to us as an association (watches Messiaah cuteye, lol)

I used both services...extensively, so I CAN tell you which one was 'better'...and PSN wasn't it.

Now that you'll HAVE to pay for it, I hope it improves overall.

I used both services, after having several xbox 360s fail on me I switched to ps3. I would have gladly continued to pay for live if I was still on 360. I signed up for psn plus, while the discounts and free games are nice psn still doesn't measure up to the xbl service.

Looking forward to the next gen online services, only gets better from here.

lol, must watch you cuteye for that outlandish statement yuh made earlier.

Having used both xbox and playstation consoles from inception...I can tell you what matters most is that your friend you wish to play with actually owns the console.

I know trinis who have put their xbox up for sale because none of their friends had the console.

true story

And if the nextgen poll we ran is any indicator....it looks like playstation is going to make a clean sweep in Trinidad again. In which case, the point (arcs) is completely moot.

A lot of that stuff is/was PSN+ only.  You had to pay for PSN+ right?
Sony only just allowed for cloud saving for 'normal' PSN users with their last update.
'Free' games, and 'discounts' is still is PSN+ only...or am I missing something?

I agree with you that services like Netflix, etc shouldn't be 'locked down' behind the paywall...especially those that you pay for separately.

Up to now Sony still can't get the chat right. XBL users could switch between FOUR chat channels including the game they're currently playing.
I'll gladly pay for PSN if that issue in particular is fixed.  Won't have a choice really...you have to pay if you're getting a PS4

I will be the LAST person to defend Microkia...but them numbers speak for themselves.
Sony HAD to put up some kind of paywall structure to boost the anemic nature of PSN, because they realised that XBL kept gamers coming back.

It STILL boggles my mind to this DAY that people were willing to buy three, four and FIVE Xbox...and STILL pay M$ a yearly fee.
Why...?   So they could keep gaming and chatting with their buddies.

Maybe if PSN had a paywall structure from the start it maight have been 'as good' or 'better' than XBL.
That said, PSN+ however has great value...if you keep paying for it.

At one time many GATTers used to have weekly XBL limes on a Friday or Saturday night well into the wee hours of the morning.

The mere fact that the PS3 didn't ship with a mic meant that many of the people on my PSN friends list...I couldn't chat with them,
and certainly not in a group like XBL.  I am probably STILL the only person in my PSN list that actually has a mic hooked up the their PS3.  :/
