Want to buy an XBOX One at launch.... better get a plane ticket

The Xbox One will launch in 21 countries in November. Interestingly, Japan isn't one of the countries that made the cut.

If you're not living in one of the launch countries, you won't be able to just import the console and its games. The official Xbox website notes that XB1 games are only to be activated and distributed in "specific geographic regions." In other words, they're region-locked.

The list of countries, below, will offer Xbox Live at launch. As previously announced, Xbox One requires you to log into Xbox Live at least once a day to play games. Therefore, if you're not in one of these countries, you won't be able to play XB1 games:

Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Canada
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Ireland
Italy
Mexico
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Russia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom
United States
As you can see from the map (via AGB), the launch countries are limited to North America, western Europe and Australasia. The two exceptions are Russia and Brazil.

Japan's absence from the list isn't all that surprising, I suppose. The Xbox 360 sold only a fraction of what the PS3 and Wii sold in that country. From 2005 to 2011, only 1.5 million 360's were sold in Japan. The numbers were even worse than the original Xbox's. I'm sure Microsoft will eventually release the XB1 in Japan but I could see why, given the numbers, they don't feel it's a huge priority to cater to that market.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the XB1 will be rolled out in Asia in late 2014. Even then, the console will be available in only select countries: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and India. These countries were deemed "high-growth markets" for gaming industry.

Seriously though... I don't know if to laugh or cry at that revelation.

I taking it for granted that you can still use your same Live account with a US address, and everything will work as normal.

I find it hard to believe myself that M$ will truly disallow gamers who aren't in that launch location list from using the Xbone.

I truly cannot wrap my head around that prospect.

How much business the Caribbean region REALLY generating for Microsoft in the gaming realm. Im willing to bet it's extremely small potatoes. In Trinidad specifically I'm willing to venture a guess that we're very small fish in a small pond.

Wyatt like to argue that these people are a business first and will do whatever is better for their bottom line so here's some business talk...

Japan sold 1.5 million units in 6 years and look at their size. Im sure the 360 was never even officially launched in Trinidad and even if it were, the number of sales would obviously be a lot less than Japan's. By that logic, ms will have even less incentive to release in our market anytime soon.

The result? Trinidad will be ps4 country, PC will rise in popularity and Xbox usage on our shores would be literally non existent.

By the time they get around to the Caribbean the war would already be lost. Gg no re.

True, but is not just trinidad, is ah whole lot of regions that excluded from that list.
India, China, all them fellers missing, i'm guessing they MS maybe wasnt ever making a serious profit from them in the first place. But still, regardless of the reasons they doing it (which im sure is completely valid on they balance sheets), if we cant play d dam games, that's BALLS!

I'm all for the rise of PC, bring KI on pc and MS could suck egg. But until that happens, i needs me an xbox one.

I just find this article, and i paid particular attention to the fact that the arcade box that killer running on is windows 7............

So they can all run on a PC in reality if the developers so chose.

Good catch. Not feeling as concerned now.

I do remember being treated as an outside child by xbox live on my 360 because of being located in the caribbean region. Some features still worked, notably, multiplayer gaming.

I guess we will have to wait and see exactly what works and what doesn't come launch day.
