Defiance...the best SyFy game / TV series you haven't heard of

I am scared.....this looks like an awesome futuristic battlefield type game....like BF2142 (my secret love)

On the other hand, it is also tied into a TV series on the SyFy network coming this April.



Could either be epic beyond epic or a colossal flop.

Here is hoping for the former.

Its......okay. Been beta'ing this (XBOX and PC) for a while with several friends on the Trion team. If you like Rift you will like this.
TRION doesn't aim for Blizzard numbers but more for a niche market like CCP (EVE ONLINE) does. 8k users....they're happy.

The tie in with the SyFy series is the only red flag that has me cautious, lol

PS3, XBOX and PC on the same server. One is lucky these days after the first month of launch that you can sustain 8k users.

I just attempted to watch the pilot...fell asleep through 80% of it.

Maybe a bad sign, maybe I was just tired.

Will find out on a second attempt tomorrow, lol

From what I did remember....the production values seemed a little low. Like something made in the 80s. That said I will reserve final judgement till my eyes remain open during the full one hour and twenty minutes episode.

Ok, so I took in Defiance a second time and was able to keep my eyes open for the entire duration.

Had to have been tired the first time around because this was solid sci fi fare.

Love the Nolan character and his daughter. The townsfolk, not so much...but still a strong debut.

There was some weak CGI but knowing that high production costs have been the bane of many a sci fi series, I'm willing to let them go cheap for the sake of the series remaining off the chopping blocks.

Has a Serenity/Firefly feel to it. That's a good thing.

The car chase was absolutely horrid as far as cgi goes...someone put that together using lego bricks and a bluescreen

Also, that scene with the deputy saving Nolan's daughter in the middle of the battle with the Vole was just jarring. wtmc?

Not feeling the elderly old ex mayor as the heavy. Would have preferred some alien scum.

..and not enough viewers willing to forego what passes for TV nowadays, and watch a show with actual substance.


I've watched the first two episodes, and yes, there's elements of Firefly, Terra Nova, with a dash of Borderlands and Babylon 5 thrown in for good measure.
It's a strange (in a good way) mish-mash of traditional character archetypes and sci-fi tropes.

The special effects and CGI are a mixed bag.  It looks great when you see stunning overhead shots of Defiance itself, but then it looks so
cheap and tacky for everything else.  You can clearly see where the costs were cut.

I honestly didn't know what to expect going in, and what I've seen so far hasn't resonated with me the way Terra Nova did, but I'll watch it,
because I'm a sci-fi fan at heart.  What I did hope to see, were aliens that were more...well...alien.  Not humanoids with different coloured skin and eyes. 
They couldn't at LEAST make better aliens?  WTF man!  It was corny when Captain Kirk banged green women...and THAT was over 40 yrs ago.  :/

What's going to make the difference with this show is the writing.  So far I've seen an attempt to craft an over-arching plot with the former mayor,
but the sub-plots seem rather predictable.  I'm willing to give the show a chance to see if the writing improves.


Based on history...I honestly don't see this show going past one season.  Sounds harsh, I know, but if a Star Trek (Enterprise) series.....a STAR TREK SERIES
couldn't survive, which is WAYYYYY better than this, well then I don't hold out much hope for this show lasting very long.


I mean, we gotta see what the new drama is with the Kardashians, right?  RIGHT!?

Yeah, the humanoid aliens is an epic fail for me (and always is)

but firefly got away with it which proves that decent writing can make up for less than stellar stage props....oh wait.....firefly failed as well.

And personally, I think the mayor plot is really weak (as mentioned in my spoilers above), could have stuck in an epic alien villain here as well.
