SSD with HD setup help
« on: February 24, 2013, 07:59:28 PM »
Hey guys, I am planning to build a new pc later down the year and concerning the hard drive part of the build, I was thinking about using a SSD for the OS and using a normal HDD to store files, use apps etc., and I am a little confused about using a RAID setup for the system or just leave it as it is. Should I just install the OS on the SSD by itself is it safe to do the RAID?.  I don't know if I am explaining this properly.

Single SSD for your games and OS is fine.

You can get a roomy enough one reasonably priced. Say a 256GB or so.

Marry that with a massive external HDD for the perfect setup.

I say external as the mechanical drive can slow down your machine in eerie ways when it has to spin up.

Best for it to sit in a housing, NAS or an ubuntu box or so for bonus points.

Also great for sharing with friends, wifey, family, etc....

Let's say I go with this plan, would I be able to run Ubuntu with Windows 7?

sorry....what I meant was.....you run windows on your main gaming rig with an SSD only.....and you have a separate NAS / HTPC that houses the mechanical hard drives which will handle bulk storage.

The NAS / HTPC can run ubuntu or it could be just a dumb external drive that has no operating system.

All depends on your pocket and how tech savvy you are.

How hardcore is your home setup going to be?
