This might come off as a dumb question, but can I sign up for a bmobile 4G plan on a Digicel phone, or vice versa?

You can, if it's not SIM-locked...or if you reflashed the phone.

My S3 was bought at bmobile, and I'm using a Digicel SIM...but then, all traces of bmobile-ness were erased when I reflashed it.

Bmobile 4G vs Digicel 4G, Speed and Performance Comparison

http://blog.triniberry.com/2012/11/bmobile-4g-vs-digicel-4g-speed-and-performance-comparison/

Summary:
In the end Digicel currently has the upper hand in their HSPA+ 4G network performance. Bmobile came out of the gate with decent speeds and aggressive pricing, which made Digicel react rather quickly. I see this as the start of the race and not the end.

Mobile subscribers can expect both networks to keep improving over time as plan features such as free sms and voice plans have taken a slight back seat to data services. Both networks will need to keep on their toes since none can really be said to currently dominate the other in terms of 4G data.

Lol yeah well that would definitely do it. I started watching some netflix and it does seem to use quite alot of data. For the average user though 5 gigs is more than enough.

Trying that as well and so far, with the little hiccups I've had for the first week which was sorted out, I still have plenty data to spare.

Hooked up my ps3 via wifi hot spot and played some black ops 2 when my flow went down. It was playable yes, not the best of connections but definitely playable. Impressed.

After playing not one, not two....but three games of DOTA with my 4G connection, I am also impressed.

The pings sit around 150 - 160 ms

My Flow connection is usually doing 110-120ms

The 4G was amazingly stable for most of the game. On occasion it flew up to 800 - 900ms but that was the exception not the rule.

Next test, Dota 2 sweat @ Maracas. lol

OK, I have another question. Do I have to go into bmobile to have them switch me over to 4G? I'm migrating from a crumby Nokia 1208 (don't laugh) to an S3, so I'd like to know how to go about it. Also are the 4G plans a service that you would be billed for monthly, or can I just head into my closest bmobile and pay for a month whenever I'm so inclined?

You can do it monthly (postpaid with your bill) or prepaid. Your choice.

I'd recommend going in. That's what I did and a few minutes later, 4G immc.

No fuss, no fight.

Can't go wrong.

I'm paying for mine monthly at the moment. It works fantastic. Being able to actually play a game of DOTA2 over 4G makes it a damn viable "backup" internet connection.
