OICW - Objective Individual Combat Weapon, currently being designed as a replacement for the popular M16 line of military assault rifles.  The three basic components are a "kinetic energy module", which is a modified H&K 5.56mm G36 rifle with a 30-round box magazine, a "high explosive module", which is a semi-automatic 20mm grenade launcher firing from a 6-round box mag, and a computerized day/night sighting system with integrated laser rangefinder and fire control unit.

the mp5 is the preferred weapon for counter terrorists around the world.. accurate, small, light, barrel long so you can beat somebody's brains out with it..

i am pretty sure that all the majot counter terrorist organizations are phasing out the mp5 in favour of newer weapons, with more power.

i love the mp5, but i think that a weapon with a little more ppunch and range is more versatile in an urban combat situation.

the mp5 is as close to perfection as one can get for SWAT/HRT
as proof just about everybody uses the gun (civilian law enforcement, military regulars and Spec Ops of numerous countries)


note the military doesn't use mp5's for urban combat, never have and never will
infantry use their standard rifles (plus machine guns and other equip carried by infantry formations), special operators use whatever they want

the mp5 is primarily used by civilian law enforcement due to its accuracy, stability and recovery as well as the fact that since it is a submachinegun, it uses less powerful pistol rounds as opposed to rifle bullets or those used by the P90, which have limited penetration, i.e. when the shooting starts in a house, the bullets from an mp5 wouldn't penetrate walls and terrorists and go through and hit hostages
rather it will hit whatever it was aimed at and stay in that object and not indiscriminately go right through and shred whatever is in its trajectory (this is a major consideration for the use of smg's, it is called underpeneration by HRT/SWAT operators)
and the mp5 is only really used when fighting inor around buildings where ranges are short (real world short range is a lot more than gaming short range)
if a more long range weapon is requried then a carbine (M4, G36k) or a rifle (M16, G3A3) would be used

since most situations don't require anything more powerful (note the standard mp5 is 9mm but there are 10mm and 45calibur versions for more power, but the bigger bullet has more kick...) the mp5 will probably be quite adequate for a lot of counter terrorist teams for a while

also note that the mp5sd5 is the PERMENANTLY suppressed version that has the silencer built on the gun
this weapon is one of the best suppressed weapons period as its only purpose is to be supressed (one silencer is not as good as any other, there are differences in "quality") and will probably be another factor to keep the mp5 for a little longer

but I haven't heard anything for replacement

i have seen that urban SWAT in the US still uses the mp5, howeve they also mix it up and have some team members carry the m4. the counter terrorist m4 has a retractable stock and a shorter barrel, like the paratrooper m4.
