Are Nasty Gamers More Likely to Lose?
« on: April 10, 2012, 05:38:12 PM »
Always remember, it's just a game. Do you know any nasty gamers?

-------------------------------------------------------------

Inconsiderate, aggressive or emotional gamers "generally do not do well" in online play says new report.

http://games.ign.com/articles/122/1222598p1.html?RSSwhen2012-04-09_143200&RSSid=1222598

Gamers who display anti-social behavior are less likely to be successful in online-play scenarios than those who are considerate and measured, according to a new report.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden have been looking at how gamers co-operate with one another, and what the effects might be on real-life behavior. And while some critics of videogames have claimed that games can turn people towards real-life violence, the researchers found that violent-like behavior patterns within online worlds tend to lead to failure.

The study involved monitoring gamers as they played "thousands of hours" of co-operative and combative online games. Researcher Jonas Ivarsson said, "The situations gamers encounter in these games call for sophisticated and well-coordinated collaboration. We analyzed what characteristics and knowledge the gamers need to have in order to be successful."

The report states, "It turns out that a successful gamer is strategic and technically knowledgeable, and has good timing. Inconsiderate gamers, as well as those who act aggressively or emotionally, generally do not do well."

Ivarsson believes those looking for a link between games and real-world violence are asking the wrong questions. "The suggested link between games and aggression is based on the notion of transfer, which means that knowledge gained in a certain situation can be used in an entirely different context. The whole idea of transfer has been central in education research for a very long time. The question of how a learning situation should be designed in order for learners to be able to use the learned material in real life is very difficult, and has no clear answers."

Same thoughts as rebirth above. When i think about it, the controlled aggressive ones seem to be the best, while the ones just stupidly violent DO tend to suck and the mild mannered ones are mid-level for the most part.

Let them do a Caribbean study/survey and it'll be concise.

I think Trinis like to troll too much in games imo. There are some facebook posts i see in various groups that proves that. Though each individual case is unique, i know some top tier players in some games and they're quiet and laid back.

Look at DeViOuS, Ronstar, MysteriO and Nazy. When they're playing SC2, they're completely focused and you don't hear a peep out of them. Also well mannered (most of the time).

Jump to a game like Dota 2, HoN and even BF3/MW3, the men who "swinging" ie, selling gunz, usually QQ the most. The angrier they get, the more they die or rage quit (guess that counts as failure right?). When i'm playing BF3, if i get annoyed with a heli camping my base or a sniper camping a spawn, i play crap, out of frustration, I go in places i usually wouldn't and miss shots for days. Just my 2c

I agree with trinilink, would be interested in a Caribbean study / survey.

We have some colorful characters on the gaming scene. A peek into their psyche would be enlightening to say the least, lol

Some of the best players I know on xbl are the most composed guys, even when they get frustrated they just go sleep or something. I myself get quite angry at  times, sometimes I play better, sometimes I play worse, but I'd say the majority of  Loud aggressive players get pwnt the more angry they get.

Well i was going on watching him play from the tournament. I suppose playing by yourself is one thing, but i do see the cases where people get frustrated with their team *cough Mez/Crackerz* lol

used to rage alot, especially when ppl using n00b combo weapons *cough*usas with frag rounds*cough* years ago
toned it down dramatically over the years as its not good for a leader to be raging sets a bad example for the rest of the clan and a leader should always be calm and composed, dont really rage much at all, takes alot to make me rage now

i do love to trash talk every now an then ingame to ppl who use the noob combo weapons and think they good, its an artform and creative trash talk is always funny

other than that one of the guidelines/rules in the clan is no trash talk unless ppl start shit 1st
