Messiaah, you do not understand.

99% of the planet are not audiophiles...you are in the minority in that respect. Do US$1000+ headphones exist? Yes, yes they do.

Are they mainstream. No, no they are not.

So yes, in 10 years, you could probably buy a PC for US$3000 that will offer a Holographic gaming experience.....but in my vision, the mainstream gamers will be running Tekken 12 and Street Fighter 9 on their mobile device. (docked or undocked, depending on if W1ntry's concept takes off)

Also, I think Virtue, phoenix and yourself have a very different concept of "reality"

Not wrong...just different.

When I say the limit of graphics, in terms of a GPU's rendering...I am precisely talking about the image posted as NBA2017 in the example above.

That is a REAL picture. Of a REAL basketball game. Not a rendering of any sort. (attaching it again, just to be implicit)

To be clear, I am stating that GPU's will be capable of rendering a virtual game with that life like imagery in 2017 - 2022.

Actually, based on the images above...its easy to extrapolate that technology will achieve that level by 2017 easily if progress continues at a similar pace as in the past five years.

The level of reality Virtue and yourself describe, is on a whole other level. Very different from what I just described. Apples and Oranges.

2012 looks pretty good, on PS3.

Not hard to imagine 2017 looking pretty real...also motion capture has come a long way, makes things look much more realistic.

Getting it right graphically is already possible. Look at the above car models, both beautifully rendered. You could probably put  them in a movie and you won't be able to tell the difference. Obviously none of the cars look like they "fit" in the game world. There is a lot to be done with lighting and shaders and so on but both cars look 'lifelike' to me.

So bascially, the disagreement here is only that both parties refuse to accept each other's " PERSONAL OPINION " of life like.

Come on guys!

But when we reach the point where its hard to differentiate real life from a video game, i'll stop at that point....

THIS is what I were referring to as "life like" or "realistic". You think in 10 years an average console/mobile device is going to be able to render gameplay visuals that looks like the picture that you posted there? Or what shiv posted? It'll be on expensive ass console or phone i assure u that.

Am i going to be able to screen shot a picture of an NPC in an outdoor environment and put it alongside a picture i took with my 50mp camera and not tell the difference? It will happen eventually, I just don't think by 2017. On the PC fine, because its the most powerful platform, but if i read right, Messiaah and Phoenix were drawing attention to the consoles and mobile phones being able to produce that very power within the same time stamp as the PC.

Those links images and vids alyuh posting, looking horrible to me.
My pc looks much better than that. And i am judging my arguments based on how my pc looks, not those lame ass graphics alyuh post there.

And based on my pc, i am saying we are not going to achieve what i am calling lifelike, in 10 years.

Wyatt. the whole arguement bout mainstream this and mainstream that. yuh spinning top in mud. You argument is, a mobile phone will be no different than a console/pc in 10 years. i am saying u are talking rubbish.

My argument is, d pc will always be ahead. U all but endorsed that statement by your $3000 holographic pc comment. Ah dont care if is elitists only, mainstream it doesnt matter. My point is this. A mobile phone will ALWAYS be behind a console/pc.
And though d truely elite will have d very best, there is still a substantial gap even in the mainstream department that will exists.

If there are high end elite PCs that coudl do holograms, there will be cheap budgjet pcs that could do it at a lesser scale, and those cheap budgjet pcs will have better graphics than a mobile device of the same era. Same thing with consoles.

Though d general public mite not care, the gaming audience, d 40 million people playing battlefield 3 on d xbox etc, is going to very much care, that their xbox 20, is looking significantly better, than there mobile device.

Bottom line is, a phone will never make it to d stage where man dont care about pc/consoles. Watch at technology in a psp vita, yet still it looks like shit compared to a ps3. which now is 6 years old.
And its going to be exactly d same, in 10, 20, 30 years.

And yes virtue, u read right. That is exactly d point.

"mainstream" is the key fly in the ointment messiaah.

I'll draw you to current day. Mainstream is the console. NOT the arcade.

In 10 years, I am postulating that mainstream will be the mobile platform. NOT the console.

The mobile platform will be good enough to do 1080p gaming and that will be the bread and butter experience for the majority of gamers.

The elite PC experience will still be superior.  Likewise, the console...in whatever form it takes by that time. On that we do agree. I expect the entry level PC, HTPC and console to be indistinguishable in a decade anyway.

The distinction is what will be the mainstream platform.

And to be explicitly clear...I expect that to be wtfpwned by mobile devices (phones/laptop/netbook/tablet/etc...)

They will be capable of lifelike renderings (as in NBA2k17...not life like as per Virtue/Your description)

Can't make it any clearer than that.....so I hope you understand this attempt.

And while we are on the topic of the death of consoles (in the future)

Here is another attack coming their way.

Let me introduce...a TV running Android.

Look ma, no console!

(And this is today, 2012....you could imagine in 2017 or 2022? Check those graphics already....gg)

you see when men dont acknowledge points.. and completely go of on a tangent.. that is when things does be ridiculous...

wyatt.. @ the time bill said 640K is enough.. that was elitist.. guess what.. it came mainstream and WENT... there will be a time when holodecks become mainstream as well... guess what.. a mobile device will not be able to replicate it then... that is what we are saying...

mobile gaming will be just that, mobile gaming... yes it will advance but it will not be able to replace hard and fast tech in the mainstream...

not to mention u keep forgeting all the other things ppl mentioning... sound, force feedback... SMELL!!!.. that will ALL become mainstream at a point, and mobile tech will not be able to reproduce it... lawd have mercy..

but neways.. if u think mobile gaming will become mainstream and everything else will be elitist well good for u... i will set a reminder on my phone 10 years from now to show u just how wrong u are..

*closes thread* i refuse to waste time spinning top in mud.. i expected better from you

What points weren't acknowledged? And what tangent?

I was very careful to address all points, going so far as to name the person being responded to as well as itemized the response in numerical format.

Better than that phoenix.

THAT IS WHAT U CALLING GRAPHICS.?

For a mobile phone to be mainstream in 10 years, d graphics of a mobile phone @ that time, will have to at least match what my beast pc producing now.

And based on those above shots, THAT NOT HAPPENING FOR BALLS.

bhrabharhbahrbharbharbh.
WHEW!

And like phoenix said, in 10 years, mobile gaming will be mobile game. All PCs in d world not going to magically become for elistist only. Nor are consoles. And both PC and Console will wtfpwn a mobile device, in d same era.

I cannot stop laughing at those android pics.

two main points u FAIL to acknowledge..

1. you still limiting hardware by your limited view or understanding.. and then brushing it off as challenging the universe... really?

2. you keep harping on what you think will LOOOK lifelike.. even posting RENDERED photos that ARE distinguishable as a game... when we are trying to explain to you... lifelike is more than what it looks like, and what is elitist does always become mainstream someday... so 5 years ago.. the elitest rigs of that day... are now NORMAL rigs of this day.. and mobile tech STILL cant compare to it..

1) Yes, I am cheekily saying so with the hopes to be proven wrong by the universe.

2) I firmly acknowledged there was a discrepancy in what I called "lifelike" and what Messiaah/Virtue/yourself called "lifelike". I was also careful to say that neither of us were "wrong". That we just had different views on what that term meant in regards to gaming.

"Life like" to me is simply graphics rendered by a GPU to look like the NBA 2017 picture. Full stop.

"Life Like" to you/virtue/messiaah is something of an order of magnitude far greater than that image. Maybe 4000p graphics with a sweat simulation engine and holographic 3 dimensional renderings.

Nothing wrong with either interpretation. They are just different. Apples and oranges.

Fully acknowledged.

Nvidia: Smartphones Will Beat Console Performance by 2014

Nvidia: Smartphones Will Beat Console Performance by 2014

On Thursday Nvidia released a slide showing the progression of GPU performance in the console, PC and mobile sectors from 2001 to 2014. As Nvidia showed us last year, consoles have created a "Z" on the chart, jumping up one level after releasing a new version with better hardware, but flatlining for numerous years thereafter. They can outperform the PC on a graphic level thanks to an integrated design, but that victory is only brief to say the least as PC hardware performance steadily climbs.

What's shocking is the steep increase in GPU performance in the mobile sector. According to Nvidia's chart, devices began to show a real increase between 2008 and 2009, but the steepest climb thus far has been from 2010 until now. What's interesting is that Nvidia's chart shows the mobile GPU to be cranking out better graphics than the current Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles starting 2013. That says a lot given that smartphones weren't even considered as competition until Apple released the iPhone in 2007.

To some degree, smartphones are in a "golden era," mirroring a similar era experienced in the 1990s when GPUs began to infiltrate the PC sector. Developers like id Software and Epic Games were always pushing the envelope, squeezing out every ounce of performance the current hardware could provide while also pushing hardware manufacturers to implement features into the next generation. We're seeing that again in the mobile sector, and it's downright fascinating to watch this technology mature so quickly.

On a visual level, the progression has been phenomenal. We've moved from monochrome Tetris-like games to console-quality titles like Modern Combat 3 in a span of a few years. The rise in visual performance wasn't quite so dramatic in the PC sector, moving from the likes of Wolfenstein 3D in 1992 (PC, Mac) to Return to Castle Wolfenstein in 2001 (PC, Mac, Xbox, PS2).

Naturally Nvidia's chart will change once Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo release their next-generation products. Reports indicate that the Wii U will likely reside with the current crop on a GPU level while the other two take another stab at pushing past PC-based GPU performance. Yet based on the sharp rise in the mobile sector, it looks highly likely that the console and mobile sectors will eventually merge. Today's top mobile chips are already on the same playing field as the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PlayStation Vita, if not better.

Well now....

The leaked gpu in the ps4 is d 7670 and d xbox card is similar. Rel sad.
Normally d new console graphics does bring it up comparable to pc graphics, then 1-2 years later pc pass it back again.
This time around , that eh going to happen. By d time those consoles release with 7670s, i go be running a 8990 or some jazz. PS4/Xbox720 going to be a nice jump from current gen, but wont be anywhere near PCs of that era. Ah well.
