If you can get past the angst, he does raise some very valid concerns...

...and I share his disappointment.

The one major advantage (buying-selling-reselling) that consoles had over PCs has now been effectively erased.
Now the Xbox One's gaming ecosystem is going to function just like Origin, or Steam.  This isn't very encouraging...at all.
Hmmm...better I just spend that Xbox One money on two new GPUs.  No sense having more than one gaming PC in the house.  :/

Their E3 showing needs to be absolutely spectacular to keep wallets from closing entirely.
You've seen the general reactions  across the internets.  Gamers are not pleased.

I don't know why some people are assuming the xbox is going to be crap at playing hard core games.

@ Wyatt, i have no idea either. E3 is where the games at.
MS trying to do a sony and nintendo combined. Casual market and entertainment is important to MS, especially in the US. That conference was to show the hardware, and was more for that audience. Regardless of what, all the hard core gamers are going to be watching E3, so once MS show d games there who gives a shit?

Is not like PS4 out now and men hard pressed as to what console to go with. Once MS come with they games at E3 it doh matter. And nintendo already show the casual audience is a tangeable market, they outsold both ps3 and xbox 360 for a while. And at launch the kinect sol 8 million in 2 days. So clearly it have an audience fo that.

As hardcore gamers we mite not care about kinect, tv, kinect, xbox, tv, but there is money to be made there and MS want it. So once they satisfy Hardcore at e3, their strategy better than sony imo. Cuase say what u want, the Xbox One can do many things the PS4 just cant do, and it have nothing the PS4 could do that the xbox cant.

the Xbox One can do many things the PS4 just cant do, and it have nothing the PS4 could do that the xbox cant.

Care to back that statement up with some facts Mr Microsoft?  It seems like you know a lot more than most.

According to this Anandtech article, (yes...the same one you 'told' us to read) both systems seem pretty on par with each other, based on the fact they're using the same hardware design philosophy.
Consider what Anand says here...

Quote
Sony gave the PS4 50% more raw shader performance, plain and simple (768 SPs @ 800MHz vs. 1152 SPs & 800MHz). Unlike last generation, you don't need to be some sort of Jedi to extract the PS4's potential here. The Xbox One and PS4 architectures are quite similar, Sony just has more hardware under the hood. We’ll have to wait and see how this hardware delta gets exposed in games over time, but the gap is definitely there. The funny thing about game consoles is that it’s usually the lowest common denominator that determines the bulk of the experience across all platforms.

On the plus side, the Xbox One should enjoy better power/thermal characteristics compared to the PlayStation 4. Even compared to the Xbox 360 we should see improvement in many use cases thanks to modern power management techniques.

Differences in the memory subsytems also gives us some insight into each approach to the next-gen consoles. Microsoft opted for embedded SRAM + DDR3, while Sony went for a very fast GDDR5 memory interface. Sony’s approach (especially when combined with a beefier GPU) is exactly what you’d build if you wanted to give game developers the fastest hardware. Microsoft’s approach on the other hand looks a little more broad. The Xbox One still gives game developers a significant performance boost over the previous generation, but also attempts to widen the audience for the console. It’s a risky strategy for sure, especially given the similarities in the underlying architectures between the Xbox One and PS4. If the market for high-end game consoles has already hit its peak, then Microsoft’s approach is likely the right one from a business standpoint. If the market for dedicated high-end game consoles hasn’t peaked however, Microsoft will have to rely even more on the Kinect experience, TV integration and its exclusive franchises to compete.

I didn't say it... Anand Lal Shimpi said it.

Bob,

I self post that anandtech article, i self say from a technical standpoint the PS4 is actually more powerful than the Xbox One. My statement sir had nothing to do with hardware....

Both systems are basically the same thing with the PS4 approach most likely being more raw power in the end, is like AMD vs Nvidia, amd usually has more raw power, but Nvidia's driver and game optimization and SLI scaling way better.

But my statement as to the capabilities of both consoles is solely software centric. The PS4 can play pretty games, so can the xbox, but the xbox can do alot more, i.e. With it's entertainment feature-set, windows 8 features, kinect, etc. Weather you use, want, or need that, at the end of the day, u getting more capabilities, at, what im guessing will be, the same price-point.

So once MS delivers on the games, they have a winning formula all-round. PS4 betters have much more exclusive content than MS, because if at the end of the day, u seeing the same games on both consoles, and it boil down to:

Halo / Gears vs Uncharted / Infamous, then Xbox One combined with all the extra things it can do, will be the better marph.

Your opinion of course.  I tend to be a bit more objective.

We shall revisit this debate after E3.
If just for your sake alone...they better knock it out the box.

I don't have to tell you what will happen if they don't.  :)

Arc, take note, these are the consoles i have owned :

NES, Nintendo 64, Wii.
Playstation, PS2, PS3.

I've never owned an xbox........nor 360......it have a reason for that.
No fanboysim involved in my opinion here. Just Logic.

Plain and simple, i dont like halo, and gears of war alone was not enough to sell the console to me.
I much rather ratchet series, jack and daxter series, uncharted series, god of war series. So personally i mite still go PS4 for those said games. But from an unbiased view, the xbox one at this point is the superior product.

Like i say, if sony drop the ball, and both consoles have basically the same games sans a select few exclusives, then i think they in trouble. If sony some how dramatically outshines MS in the games department, then one can aruge, more/better games > features offered by Xbox One.

Either way, E3 is where it's at. No reason to bash sony or MS until then.

Nice try, but you of all people...the biggest proponent of all things Windows, and by extension Microsoft,
don't suddenly get to hide behind the words 'unbiased', and 'logic' when it suits you.

'Superior product' is highly subjective.  Unfortunately, the majority of the internet doesn't agree with you.

How is it that Microsoft could end up selling more WiiU than Nintendo ever could?  (the comments in that article are comedy GOLD :laughing7: )

I like your 'logic'.

I guess refusing to buy a MS product and buying the competitors product for 2 consecutive generations and still leaning towards buying sony product for another generation qualifies me as being biased towards Microsoft -> confused look goes here <-

But it have no "opinion" involved here, facts is fact, and fact is, xbox one can do many things ps4 cant. and ps4 cant do anything xbox one cant. Those are facts buddy -> confused look here <-

And as the 360 outsold the ps3, so to, and maybe even more so, the xbox one will outsell the ps4.

*this comment comming from somebody who still may very well chose the ps4 over xbox provided sony delivers its tried and ture superior exclusive content* but based on the last sale figures compariosn, developers could very well jump ship and MS come out to lash at e3.

So for the third time, E3 is where it's at.

Write it off as a fanboy rant if u will, but i dont own and never did own an xbox/360 and currently freaking uncarted 2 on my ps3
->confused looks goes here<- lol.

1. Full body motion tracking
2. Skype
3. Ability to independently upgrade software on device without requiring full firmware/os update due to segregated game and apps os
4. Hdmi pass through for simultaneous / alt tab viewing of tv/games
5. Snapped viewing of apps/ games (useful for snapped Skype videos whiles playing co-op) on big screen
6. Voice/motion controlled UI
7. Variety of windows apps made possible by the running of the windows NT kernel.
8. Force feedback triggers allowing for better experience in shooters / racers
9. Ability to use Xbox to replace TiVo devices with digital access to cable channels via Kinect commands with intelligent channel detection (say "watch hbo" and the Xbox will change to the appropriate channel on your cable box"

.....just to name a few.

And! Since the hardware between both are similar, the Xbox one will also be capable of the same graphical prowess in games as the PS4.

So like I said, if Sony don't have a killer "Exclusive" lineup, what's the point?

Any other questions?

Must admit (strange as it sounds) that I am in complete agreement with Messiaah on this one.

On a side note, very confused as to how Microsoft could cause an 800%+ increase in Wii U sales in the UK by revealing the xbox one.

That makes no sense at all, as if the presentation some how brought Nintendo back from the dead.

800% increase on all 4 units sold is just 32 consoles sold.

Numbers are all relative.

Ive always hated Sony for taking away the ability to run full linux builds on their console. To me, that was a significant advantage over the competition at that time and even now.

Out of that list that messiah posted, the ones I like are hdmi passthrough, full body motion tracking and running of windows apps.

All those other things (IMO!!!) are straight up gimmicks and or are "better" based on perception.

That said, ps4 really hadda come good if they want to push ahead. Halo and kinect alone seem to be strong selling points for ms.

1. Full body motion tracking  You 'got' me there.
2. Skype  M$ does own Skype now.  Moot point.
3. Ability to independently upgrade software on device without requiring full firmware/os update due to segregated game and apps os  Nice, but so what?
4. Hdmi pass through for simultaneous / alt tab viewing of tv/games  I can do this now by switching inputs with my TV remote
5. Snapped viewing of apps/ games (useful for snapped Skype videos whiles playing co-op) on big screen  ...because I really need to be doing so much other stuff instead of concentrating on the game I'm playing
6. Voice/motion controlled UI  Nice to have, but making it's use mandatory is not a 'pro'
7. Variety of windows apps made possible by the running of the windows NT kernel.  Can't argue with that, but people have Windows PCs already.  Do we really need unnecessary apps on our console?
8. Force feedback triggers allowing for better experience in shooters / racers  "better experience"?  Subjective
9. Ability to use Xbox to replace TiVo devices with digital access to cable channels via Kinect commands with intelligent channel detection (say "watch hbo" and the Xbox will change to the appropriate channel on your cable box"  Totally irrelevant to users outside the US

.....just to name a few.

And! Since the hardware between both are similar, the Xbox one will also be capable of the same graphical prowess in games as the PS4.  If developers can harness the power and capabilities of the PS4's beefier GPU, you might have to revise that statement :)

So like I said, if Sony don't have a killer "Exclusive" lineup, what's the point?

Any other questions?

You ask 'what's the point'?  Have you not seen the general reaction to the Xbox One thus far?

You seem to have adopted the same attitude as M$ that somehow these 'features' are going to help sell the console.
Newsflash: it's the GAMES (the REAL 'killer apps') that are going to sell this thing.

This looks to me like another case of Microsoft trying to apply one standard to two already well established markets. Win 8 is an attempt to merge the tablet and desktop OS. This is an attempt to merge the gaming console and media hub device.

Now mind you, the XBox 360 already has some ability to do this.

However, people who don't need gaming are already buying AppleTVs, Boxees, and other media devices. These are well established and the market has been maturing. Besides that, there is no additional charge to use Netflix or Hulu+ on top of your monthly fee like there is with XBox Live.

As for me, I use my console as a gaming device. I don't need or really want Kinect. I still see no integral use for it. I don't use the media capabilities because I already have a HTPC
that does media streaming better than any console ever could.

Essentially, they are playing up the media stuff and playing down the video game stuff. But the problem is that I don't see this device expanding the market for the folks interested in media devices. There are cheaper alternatives.

Lets talk about gamers now...you know, the market that actually wants to buy the thing to play GAMES on it.
For gamers, the media stuff is decidedly secondary.  I never wake up a morning and decide to use my console for Netflix.
In that nice list you put up there, you conveniently left out some other things that the XB1 could do that the PS4 (possibly) can't, namely...

10. Games are now to be locked to your account.  There goes the used games market.  There goes the ability to borrow a game at your leisure to 'try out'
and decide if you want to buy it.  I've lost track of the amount of console titles I've borrowed and sold over the years, many times to buy other games, new and used.
11. Always on.  Not everyone likes the idea of a console that's connected to the internet, with a camera and microphone, sitting in their rooms, 'watching' them.
(I didn't even know this was an issue, but that's what reading will do for you).
12. Always online.  If the Adam Orth debacle didn't clue you in to just how big of an issue this is, then nothing that I say will.
The pros and cons of this have been discussed ad nauseam.  It's a bad strategy.  No one likes it...well except M$ and EA.
There goes a huge swath of gamers who don't have access to a persistent, reliable internet connection, and depending on location, none at all.

You see 10. and 12.?  Those two points overshadow the first 9.  You've seen the reactions yourself.
Yet you're going to sit there and tell me...based on 'logic', that this console is 'superior'.  Just because YOU say so?  It don't work like that 'bro'.
All the Xb1 have on PS4 right now is Kinect, and superior high-polygon dog tech.

AFTER E3, it is US, the GAMERS (not YOU), who will decide which console is superior...and not a MOMENT before, because right now, M$ on thin ice.

Arc, it is a given that MS is going to score in the hard core games department

I doubt people expect them to have to "prove" that at this stage of the game. It should be de facto and understood.

It is ironic that MS is getting a lot of flack for always online and attaching games to a user account.

This has been well entrenched on the PC and is now status quo. Blizzard/Activision does it, EA does it, Steam does it....

Where was the revolt....(tumble weeds).....there was none. Gamers still bought Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 and countless other games that were "locked down" by this very method.

So now the consoles have gotten in on the action. It makes complete business sense. It prevents piracy (primarily) and also puts a bullet in the head of the grey market (used games) which has always been a bane to the industry.

Win win.

At the end of the day, we should want the industry as a whole to thrive. Let us not forget how many great gaming companies have died in recent years. Last (and surely not least) of which was THQ, makers of my beloved WarHammer.

Cut 'em some slack.

* TriniWyatt will be buying an XBOX One (God willing)

hahhaha @ awesome. Good point wrt nintendo sales figures.

And I don't know bout you arc, but having one less remote to interfere with in my household would be sweet....as well as replacing my HTPC with a console.

It is stupid that I have a wii, ps3 and 360 in my media center right next to my TV and still need a PC to just watch some videos. Each of those boxes have enough horse power to do the deed. Hell, even the original XBOX (not to be confused with Xbox One) could be used as an HTPC with the venerable XBMC software.

If they drop an XBMC app for the XBOX ONE it is gg wp no re

I can guarantee you that the Microsoft console will be the one on 99% of the time. No HDMI switching or anything.

XBOX show Food Network. XBOX show Attack on Titan Xbox Show TV6. lol

Unfortunately, I heard where that feature may be only available in the US. :(
