Wanna get a TV on hire purchase. Where to look?
« on: December 14, 2011, 09:57:21 AM »
Yes, I know. But not all of us can afford to buy them cash.

I wanna get an HDTV between 50"-55" (bigger the better XD).

Any suggestions of where to look? Quick, simple question. (And doh say Courts  )

Something that has always been funny to me. Is that if you buy from a big chain dept store and get the no questions asked replacement policy.
I've had a friend who 'grew' from a 26" to a 50+ inch tv just by having the tv """"break""" not long before the replacement policy was up. and he simply 'upgraded' after. Cuz they give a card, not the replacement TV itself.
So.. das one way to get a 55 inch lol

Courts (honestly)

But I'll tell you this, the banks are literally BEGGING people to take loans. Interest rate is very low

So if you want more flexibility in your purchasing options, take a small loan and then buy the TV anywhere you like.

Pricesmart or CTC Comfort Zone are some good choices too

I did a heavy exercise on selecting the right 50"+ LCD a a year or two back.

Be very wary of the model numbers. You often find old and problematic models being dumped on our market.

do not under any circumstance by shit from Pricesmart. I've checked out their gear, it is usually 2x the regular price and 1/2 the actual worth (720 p big screen tvs for all kinda obscene prices)

Wyatt has a good point, take the loan, and shop wherever

Nothing wrong with a loan to buy a TV. Especially around Christmas time.

We talking $15,000 - $30,000 here. Depending on the unit he selects. That is more than some cars on the market.

Rage, this is the previous topic discussion about a 50"+ LCD TV, local.

You may find it very interesting given your current plight.

http://www.carigamers.com/cms/forums/index.php/topic,19779.0.html

Observe the wild difference in prices and quality across the local stores.

Moral of the story......It really pays to shop around.

PM have the mid sized tv's for very good price, a good $800+ less than other people including Courts for similar units.

Got my LED 1080p 40" Toshiba about a year ago for like $6500 where everywhere else had the same size units in normal LCD for the same price..

Other than the HP thing, I could never understand why ppl will buy tvs from courts.

just be wary of the models. Research, research, research.

That goes for Pricesmart and all other suppliers in fact.

Last thing you want is to end up with a lemon (like the Toshiba 55" pricesmart had back when I was looking for an LCD, price was fantastic but it had a well documented hdmi audio glitch that would have been a deal breaker for me)

...and would you believe the 40-inch Toshiba TV my bro got as a wedding present 'stopped working' a few weeks ago, and had to go back in to fix?  Barely eight months old too.

...and it was bought at Pricesmart.  :/

Yeah boy whenever I making a big purchase serious research goes on lol. When I finally go to buy I probably know more about the item than the sales person.

Just wanna add to TriniWyatt point, getting a loan is by far the better thing than hire purchase. If you thought the bank loans were bad , hire purchase butt rapes you. The interest on a bank loan right now is much lower than hire purchase rates.

The most I'd ever do on hire purchase is 3 months for cash...

It will have to be something drastically important if I have to go on hire purchase/bank loan for...and a TV is not one of those things.

Depends on how much you value your TV.

a 52" in your living room maybe an experience worthy of facing the bank's interest rate, if that is something you prize highly.

Let's not hate on a man for his preference. lol

You got my support on the move Rage. I know not everyone can just throw out $14,999.00 on a flat screen at whim.

Does it have to be so big?  I 'get by' on a 27-inch.  :laughing7:

$10K+ is way too much to spend on a single electronic item...but that's just me.
Pretty good TVs can be had for way less.

If you must, then take that bank loan.  Hire-purchase will have you paying back nearly triple the cash price.  Not cool.

I not knocking the man eh, everyone has different priorities. I personally would like to have an LCD TV for home, but I can't afford one - so I remain with my 25" CRT. When I can afford for myself a decent 40"+ TV, then I will go for it. I guess it was because of the way my folks brought me up - they always said that either you have or you don't, avoid putting money that you don't have immediately into something that isn't vital. If it isn't vital, then save.

If it's something that he considers to be important enough for him, then I say go strong. Bank loan only go come into play for me when things looking really bad.

With THAT said, if you have to choose between hire purchase and bank loan, go with the loan instead of hire purchase, unless if you plan to pay off the HP in less than a year. Anything longer, well might as well let them throw in a 2-3 year supply of lube in your purchase as well.

Man I drool when I see the 80" Sharp TV's up here.
Makes a 55'er look like a 22inch monitor. lol

It all depends on the size of the room and viewing distance.
A big room like the pricemart show-room makes the screens look puney.
Once you set it into your room, it makes all the difference.

As for the topic-at-hand, Courts seems to be the best bet in T&T. Had a few family members do the same thing, and they had no complaints.

Ok, just so you all understand, I'm not getting the TV on whim. It's something my famly's always wanted and we finally decided to take the plunge and take it out for Christmas. Been wanting one for years. Our old 27" CRT's broken down and been repaired more times than I care to even count. And allyuh see how large my movie collection is, so dais another factor in getting one XD. Might go with the higher purchase option though. taking a loan for a TV seems a bit much. and it eh have many ppl who do as much research as me before making a big buy, so doh frighten. thanks for the advice ppl.

Well we were suggesting the loan as opposed to hire purchase because the interest that you will end up paying, is going to be much greater (a 36 month HP plan ends up with you paying more than double the cost of the item originally, while a 24 month bank loan, with interest rates at the level they are, means you'll only pay like 20% more than the borrowed amount).

A friend of mine recently had to take a loan for 15K (for surgery), and the interest that had to be repaid on it over 2 years would come up to under 3K.

Not to mention then you'll most likely have extra cash to do other tasks if so required.
