say goodbye to our dear friend the radeon 8500
« on: February 27, 2004, 06:14:04 PM »
The 8500 has finally gone the way of its celebrated competitor , the geforce 3 TI...... not available anywhere [ except at $350 USD on some piper site ] ... The 8500 was the DX8 equivilant of the 9700 , faster than the competition, supporting better technologies [ pixel and vetrex 1.4, unlike the 1.0 of the geforce 3/4 ] etc. The 8500 has been remade into the 9000 , 9100 and 9200 but these pretenders are not nearlyas fast.
The 8500 still is a great budget card [ if you can find one] , it can do 11000 3d 2001 marks as opposed to the 10000 of a geforce FX 5700 .
As soon as the 9900s come out all the 9700/9800 will start the path to extinction also....

One thing to note, the geforce 3 and geforce 4 are almost IDENTICAL, same technologies behind it, just the geforce 4 has 2x the ram [ and faster ram] and a cooler chip design .
The 9700 and 9800 are also identical, the 9800 just uses higher clocks and 24x compression for colours and textures [ less ram used ] . The manufacturers make one good chipset.. then upgrade the design 2-3 times

the MX 440.. CANNOT TOUCH AN 8500 in 3d mark, no BUDGET nvidia card can..... the 440 gets around 6000 on a 2.8GHZ + system..... The 8500 is ATI's equivilant to the Geforce 4 TI series.... which only scores about 200 more points on the TI 4600, An AIW 8500 is faster tha 5600/5700 nvidia cards for DX8 and some DX9 games . plus better features and better driver quality [www.omegacorner.com] , better image quality and 256 bit memory interface [ like the 9800/9700 ]

i doubt the 5400 can touch the 8500 either... but i don't see it anywhere..

Yes.

The Radeon 8500 has some things built into hardware that makes certain things FAST.

i just discovered something... a Pentium III gets 6800-7000 3d marks regardless..... the one on toms hardware had a 9700 pro in it...... so if you are getting a hi perf graphics card.. remember to get a processor that won't hold it back

You got to tell the whole story...while fast...the 8500 was plagued with serious driver issues when it came out.

Very popular games had serious artifacts and performance issues. It was only late in the game that ATI got their driver act together.

People won't have to worry much about getting a fast processor to match with their video cards since 2Ghz is like an entry level cpu nowadays.

I had to get a used 1700 to put on one of the GL machines last month because no where had a new 1600/1700 mhz processor for sale. Only 2200 and up.

That's the way the market goes....out with the old, in with the new.

PS...Still have a Geforce3 TI 128MB running down @ Euro. It kicks ass. Runs all the latest games.

NFS Underground?

If he has really limited money (under $500 TT), I'd say that he should go with the Ge Force 4 MX 64 MB DDR (8x AGP)  Look for a card with those specs.

If he has to see DX 9 graphics niceities, I'd suggest a GeForce FX 5200.  Not the Fx 5200 SE.  He'll pay a bit more for it, though.
