Still, just as I acknowlege your arguments....I maintain that the PC had its shot to show some love to developers by spending money on games instead of pirating them. Sales figures is the only "vote" that matters at this stage. It was the only vote that mattered at all. Yet, sales were extremely low and piracy figures were extremely high.

Can you see that perspective?

Also, do not underestimate the negative effect on the developers after seeing their years of hard work pirated 100 million times on the internet.

Yeah i hear yuh. I understand what you mean.

But check this perspective.

I pre-ordered NFS Shift 2 Unleashed from Amazon.com (Had $20 promo credit). They shipped it out last Thursday and was delivered on Monday in Miami. Since then it has been sitting their in the warehouse (reason unknown). It left Miami this evening for TT so it looks like i will be getting this thing on Monday/Tuesday. Something that usually takes 5 days is taking almost two weeks, but whatever.

Well i have the day off tomorrow and nothing much to do all weekend. Guess what i did. I downloaded a copy just to pass the time till the retail gets here. What do you think about that? How would you class someone like me? I added one to the sales figures but also one to the pirated numbers. Get this, it's not the first time. The exact thing happened when i ordered DiRT 2 from Amazon. Am i playing with the minds of developers/publishers? Maybe you were right all along, maybe it's people like me are the ones destroying PC gaming. If it's greed that fuels them, trying to count imaginary numbers as lost sales, then they can go to hell imo.

lol, shiv

Let me put it this way.

I walk into GamezPlus in MovieTowne.

Buy a Copy of Cryis 2 for the PC.

While the guy is packaging it up and doing the receipt, I steal a copy from the display shelf.

What do you think of me?

I agree, but did pirating the game before actually receiving and activating my license affect PC sales? Nope, its just another number added to the piracy figures. As you put it, they got my "vote". Thats what matters right? Not some bogus amount of pirate downloads.

Shiv, if your scenario was the norm...then the crysis 1 equation would have been more like:

Crysis: 90 million copies Pirated....100 million copies sold (cha ching!)

instead it's

Crysis: 80,000 copies sold....100 million pirated (bankrupt)

but all that aside, I just read an article on the matter that says the perspective varies greatly due to age.

That is, older folks 30 and up, are more aware that "downloading" is illegal and wrong.

Younger folks, under the age of 30, think nothing of it.

Simply  because the older people are accustomed to paying for games, music, movies, etc... in stores but the younger generation is more accustomed to accessing all of these things online, for free.

Maybe we should run a poll to see if that holds true in Trinidad as well.

True, i remember when i was in my early teens and got my first PC, i didn't care about paying for games i just wanted something to play. It's later on i realized what was taking place and the consequences of piracy. I always bought games for my consoles but it was not until the late 90's that i started buying my PC games.

Honestly, what make me start buying games is a combination of 2 things.
1. Online games get harder and harder to crack and juss wasnt worth d hassle, much easier to buy and swet.
2. Steam. (and d many benifits that goes with it, no cds to deal with etc)

Them is really d major reasons i started buying, Wanting to support d developers and give dem dey money for dey game was d third reason, but those first 2 are d prominent ones.
Im ah few years away from 30, but i buy all my games now because of those reasons, and if digital media was so dread earlier, i woulda start buying games earlier, i juss waiting for HQ Music/Movies to follow suit.

This is definitely the greatest thread hijack of all time on GATT. I propose we take this discussion to it's own thread. What say we all? once we all agree i'll or some other staff will move the posts related to as well, to that thread.

So: The Gaming community, buyers, sellers, hackers thread who say it?

Looks like Crytek finally decided to work on a DX11 Patch. It was announced this morning but they didn't give any details.

I'll be 32 this year, so my perspective obviously skews the curve on that article a bit ;)

Another thing to consider is that younger generations generally have significantly less disposable income and so have fewer options for acquiring the games that they covet. Not that that's an excuse, but it is a reality. If you'd asked me 10-15 years ago if I would buy a console, knowing that I'd have to buy the games to go with it, I'd have said no without skipping a beat. Now watch meh, 360, and games to go wit it.

Good call w1n, make it so.

Yeah w1n, agreed.

That's gonna be about 90 percent of the posts to move. Lol.

Might be easier to rename this and move the "crysis related ones".

I dunno man, I still cannot equate stealing an extra copy off a store shelf to downloading a "stolen" copy while waiting on your amazon bought retail to arrive. I mean a sale is a sale and the publisher has been paid. I'm not saying that it is right but at the same time it can't be as bad as stealing another copy while the clerk packs the bag at gamez plus. I look at it this way, what is the end use of the acquired copy. Is it for someone who already has a legit copy or are you going to pass it onto another who hasn't paid. Obviously using any type of software without paying  for it is piracy.
Looking at it another way what about the legit copy you get, you make a backup and then your original gets damaged/stolen. Is it that much different to the initial download shiv was referring to?

Well in my case, i am going to delete all traces of the acquired copy (even game saves) before i install the retail. As it stands at the moment, i would consider it piracy, even though i already paid for the retail. Even if you take into consideration, the copy stolen off the shelf comes with a legit key and the downloaded copy does not, its still piracy any way you look at it as you are stealing from someone.

It is also against the EULA to make a copy a backup any way, right? Besides, with the EA download manager anyone can download a digital copy in the event the game disc gets scratched.

I'd wager the majority of 'acquired' copies aren't because the person BOUGHT a legit one. Just saying.
