Inside IE9: How Microsoft rewrote its browser from scratch
« Reply #2 on: March 15, 2011, 01:11:20 PM »
Been following IE9 since beta to test its compatibility with the web apps I write. One thing I can say, quite honestly, its one of the best out there. Everything before was pure rubbish (except IE8 which was ok)

Inside IE9: How Microsoft rewrote its browser from scratch

http://www.geekwire.com/2011/geeks-guide-to-ie9

Quote
“If I can make IE9 fast here, I can make it fast anywhere,” Weber explains, noting with almost a hint of pride that the graphics scores of his various machines are all in the bottom 20 percent of PCs run by everyday computer users. If the browser is running smoothly and quickly on his setup, he says, “a high-end machine is just going to scream.”
Those performance improvements will be critical to Microsoft’s efforts to regain traction in the browser market, in the face of tough competition from Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and others.
Microsoft also still needs to overcome lingering negativity about its browser, resulting in part from years of neglect in which little to no work took place on Internet Explorer — creating a five-year gap between major versions, between 2001 and 2006.

Tried it out myself today, and I must say, it's rather stellar.
Loving the 'new' minimalist UI.

Flash/Optimus issues aside, I will say that MS has finally  nailed it.

Chrome and Firefox still does a few things better, and now, a smidgen faster.
It shall make a solid #2 browser after Chrome.  :)

^^ Ahh but have you been playing with FF4 before awarding that spot? It is a spectacular showing from mozilla! The fact remains, no matter which you choose, you'll be receiving a top notch web experience. Its just a matter of preferences.

Chrome: simplicity and ease of use. (hands down the most stable of all)
Firefox: extensions and security (most frequently upgraded browser)
IE9: Hardware acceleration and render speed (though lacking some css3 properties atm)

I do my browsing in chrome, hacking in firefox and testing in IE9 :)

The preview releases have been available, but the final build only just got oficially released yesterday.

I quite like it. Will take me a little bit to get used to the new placement of the Favourites button, but I'll live. Feels a lot like Chrome to be quite honest, with the default settings of no status bar etc.

Was using the RC, now using the final, it does take a lil getting accustomed to and it doesn't work with RBL Internet Banking (heads up to ppl trying this and locking themselves out of their accts XD). Will see if I can crash it!

Thanks for the heads up. lol! I'll continue to use Firefox 4 for my online banking then.

steups i find that its a pain that in this day and age we need primary and secondary browsers...

we need a browser that can support all sites!!! grr...

haven't checked out ie9 in dept yet but i doubt in can dethrone opera... well test it on my laptop (ie8 is my secondary)

My main is firefox, second is Chrome, I use IE for very specific apps. Opera... I actually went away from that for quite some time, and only VERY RECENTLY tried it again.. sadly and this is just my personal experience. It's NO faster than firefox, has website incompatibilities (even with GATT AT TIME WDMC), doesn't support certain key shortcuts that firefox supports, doesn't have a downthemall add-in (this one is a huge prop for fireferret) and the shortcuts are on the start page which is annoying to open a new tab each time I want to see my usual (default behaviour). Things I do like, whiteboard, opera sync and look. Opera has always looked very polished.

well not meaning to turn it into a browser comparison thread...

the thing i real love about opera is configurable alias search ("a ps3"="search amazon for ps3", "y samsung focus"= "search youtube for samsung focus" etc)... the lovely tab interface, opera link, speed dial... and well honestly i havent found much incompatible sites (but the ones i found are incompatible with FF as well, so thats why IE is my second), and i think you need to use opera boost to see the real speed doh..

Opera boost was on... didn't really see the difference, I guess i'll have to consciously compare the two. But at a user level, just using, it's no different imho. Another WELL known site that Opera has issues with to date is flicker. I haven't seen it myself, but it was given on VERY good word from a coworker of mine who does professional photographs and has some of his photos selected by flicker themselves. He uses it as his primary and that incompatibility is his biggest gripe.
