So what bluetooth handsfree device are YOU using?
« on: March 01, 2011, 02:19:17 PM »
So everyone knows how its kind of against the law to drive while holding a phone so pretty much everyone is using some sort of bluetooth tech in their vehicles.

My question to you is what device are you using.

Personally, I do not see the need for a bt deck which will pretty much integrate your phone into your car. Plus I have grown fond of the fact that u dont need to hold a phone even when u are away from the car, eg, cooking or washing wares. As such I have more or less taken the in-ear device route.

I bought a Blackberry HS500 device around Christmas time and surprise surprise, it fall once, the whole case crack open and that was it. Sweat buss.

So now in all my research my choices came down to either the Plantronics Discovery 975 or the Jawbone Icon Thinker. Based on some better user feedback on amazon and the rest of the internets in terms of call quality on wither side of the conversation, I chose the Jawbone.

Now this thread is not only for in-ear devices but should cover the broader 'handsfree' category. So, what are you using?

Parrot CK3100 and EGO Flash

Both are universal BT modules that integrate into your car system.
Both come with a display that shows Incoming call, battery life, cell signal etc....not bad
I like them both. Only disadvantage is the EGO only uses one speaker in the car [right front] whereas the Parrot utilizes all 4 speakers. So that's what i use.

Just using a generic Motorola bluetooth headset on my BB XD works like crap though, but gets the job done

^^ I am using the younger brother ... The Plantronics Voyager 510. Got 2 for $29.99 a pair off amazon last year for an associate of mine and myself. He has since abandoned me for the voyager pro listed above. I would admit, the device is a bit clunky, but comfortable nonetheless. And the fact that it has dual standby, makes the clunkiness worthwhile though. Both my phones are paired at the same time, so it is really convenient compared to having 2 separate devices in my ear.

Currently using a BlueAnt Z9i

...oh and it's firmware upgradeable via USB.  Can pair with 5 devices. 2 phones simultaneously.

Perfect for me as I have to tote around a work phone, and my personal phone.
I can answer/call on both seamlessly, without either phone having to leave my pockets.

I'm currently using the Plantronics Voyager Pro -   My logic with it, is the fact that it's so visible on your face that there is no way an officer can charge you - Even if you're holding the phone itself to your next ear.

Everything that the home site says about the Voyager Pro is true. -
The call quality, comfort and everything else discussed, stands up to be true.

However, when you're wearing the unit with the mic arm in the upright position, you will get the feeling that you are an alien which is receiving signals from the mothership.
You know who's going to inherit the earth?  Arms dealers  because everyone else is to busy killing each other   That's the secret to survival  never go to war    Especially with yourself.

I agree, that's most of the reason why I went with the prime over the Icon; it still just too expensive. I got the Prime for CAD$24, it's usually around $80 now. The Icon I believe is still around $100 in most places, and I still really like it but after seeing the niceness of the Era I just want it lol. Need a job first though...not ready to drop that kinda cash for a (mono) Bluetooth headset.

Cardo S800

Just US$25 on Amazon

No longer supported by the manufacturer (they deal with bike men in-helmet headsets only now), but the one i had worked so well two years ago, I bought it again.

On a side note, I just happened across this site that can make a custom earpiece for your headset if you hate using the ear loop. It molds to fit your ear exactly. Just US$80, lol

Ahh boy the 975. I alllmmoooosstt buy that till I see too many complaints abt poor sound quality on either end of the call, or at least poor as directly opposed to the Jawbone Icon, for the same price no less.

Doesnt come with fancy carry charge case but i'll take sound a build quality over that anyday.

Icon just win all around yes...once it drop some more, I all over that. They released some newer 'models' to it recently as well, wrt to the cosmetic appeal of the model as a whole.

Oh and well on a related not is there an Android app that will enable my BT when I put it to charge/disable when I unplug charger? Just trying to manage my battery life without having to constantly enable BT when entering the car.

Hmm looks like this app can do it.

As interesting as that gizmo looks woodyear, i think its a greater distraction than an ear piece. U'd have to divert attention off the road to use it i.e. looking down at your deck to locate the device and use it. I prefer the convenience of a button on the side of my head to answer calls and with a blackberry the voice command dialing is pretty efficient so that works well for me.
