Well I'll be in the market for a CPU upgrade in Q1 2012

Already bit the bullet on the GPU upgrade.

AMD likely to have anything worth my while by say March?

Or is the I2500K / 2600K still the smart money?

Nail down what your budget is for a CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade,  and simply run the numbers to see which platform will give you a proper increase in performance.

If you're not afraid of being soundly trounced in the benchmark rankings :laughing7:, then by all means,  consider an AMD 990FX board,  and Phenom X6 CPU.  I know you won't be using SLI or Crossfire,  so GPU bottlenecks won't be a factor.

Compare the performance of the X6 with a similarly priced Intel Core i5 or i7.   See which one is better,  and make your decision based on that.

I'm willing to bet even money that the Intel CPUs will still wipe the proverbial floor with their similarly priced AMD counterparts.

I second Arc's reply there as well!

Considering you have a dual core ( bleh ), any upgrade be it a Phenom2, 1366 or even a 1155, you WILL see a vast improvement.

I would not rule out the fact of, ' the benchmarks are just numbers'. Technically its good fun to be in the high rankings, makes you feel good about your build as well. I say since you already, and I really don't know how you  held out this long, but yeah, wait a bit longer for this year's 2nd quarter and see where prices fall.

Remember too Ivy bridge is coming as well, which more than likely result in a drop in SB prices...does not matter AMD vs Intel...we all win

^^ Good point..

Not sure about your last sentence their buddy. I recently had a MSI 990fxa board and Phenom2 1100T and well.......SOLD that off to buy the current setup I have. NOTICED a difference even without OCing.. and i had the 1100T OCed to 4.0ghz daily.

lol

The only reason I am upgrading is to wax the floor with saxman's buttocks in the benchmark threads.

All my games are playing just fine with the dual core and 6950 gpu.

If the 2500/2600K will push the most pixels for the buck vs the AMD cpu equivalent come March, I'll maintain my course in the intel camp.

mind you, I was a big AMD man back in the day.....so don't think I'd avoid the red team on principle.

In fact, my second rig at home right now runs AMD. It only does HTPC duty though, lol

There you go! AMD can handle their vybes, just dont compare the two camps.

Especially when you check out sites like tigerdirect and all those others and you see that the top selling processors are AMD BD chips, strange how that works...I guess the marketing plot of "OMG 8 cores" would work on alot of people who just don't know better.

well the steam stats tell a very stark story.

majority of gamers the world over running intel.

despite amd being cheap and "good enough"

if their numbers are to be trusted

http://www.carigamers.com/cms/forums/index.php/topic,16531.msg284291.html#msg284291

You will see the stats from 2009 to compare against the 2011 stats in that thread.

Very interesting progression over those years.

Yea it is what it is...I'm just saying what is being said on those sites/overclock.net users can't seem to get a BD chip at any of their local stores, people just maybe are not buying the chips for gaming...who knows

I was considering (deeply) a SB... 2500k before xmas... then I thought about it and heck I already owned a 1090T BE, which for gaming is damn good and I have 6 cores, which will hardly EVER get used (save when I using Adobe or such). The more I thougth about it the more sensible buying a new mobo and ram became and with black november and 45USD 8GB DDR3 1866, making it just a mobo for an AMD upgrade vs a mobo+cpu for the Intel upgrade to achieve what 10-15% increase in frames AT BEST? I'd be better off with a GPU upgrade.

I am very disappointed with AMD for the let down but the bottom line is they are still excellent for budget gaming where I reside. The money I saved on the Intel upgrade will now get me a new gpu, I am waiting on you guessed it AMD to release the 7870s to see what my GPU upgrade will be.
hmm u shine a light on something that even i need to look at, i have a 990 fx asus formula v mb i was just waiting for the bulldozer to slap in an 8core but is best i wait cause man amd suck with the bulldozer line.. i currently have a 4 core which works good for gaming but i know it will give me issues when i want to sli, so with that being said maybe i should just upgrade to a cheap 6core and two beastly GPUs.. in the long run i could save myself a lot of money

^^ Which six core? AMD or Intel ?

Depending on which, you may be correct about saving in the long run. Because it is very likey that AMD's 6 core will bottleneck 2 'beastly' GPUs.

Yea i second this..If i were going 2 way or 3 way sli your only option is intel. But i have seen some threads where guys running 2way sli (570's) on a BD chip got like 10-25fps boost just by running the win7 patches. So there could be some promise with piledriver, only time would tell

AMD Plans New FX Processors to Go Up Against Ivy Bridge
8:30 AM - March 23, 2012 by Douglas Perry - source: Donanimhaber

AMD will be reacting to the launch of Intel's Ivy Bridge processors with four new FX CPUs that are slotted for a Q2 release.

In the mainstream, AMD will be adding the FX-6130 to complement its the 6-core FX-6100 and FX-6200 with a 3.9 GHz/ 3.6 GHz version. In the entry level area, AMD is now listing the quad-core FX-4130 with 3.9 GHz/3.8 GHz. Both processors are 125 watt parts.

When released, AMD will be offering a total of eight 32 nm, Zambezi-based FX processors - three quad-core CPUs, three hexacore processors and two eight-core versions - spanning a packed price range from $115 to $245. We would expect AMD to adjust its processor pricing closer to the Ivy Bridge launch as well.

The new 4130 model could turn out to be a new budget model as it will only include half of the 8 MB L3 cache of all other FX CPUs.
