Google Glass Is Available to Everyone Today ONLY: How to Buy It
«

Anyone gonna buy it? So tempted.....
http://mashable.com/2014/04/15/google-glass-how-to-buy/?utm_cid=mash-com-fb-main-link
Today at 9 a.m. ET, everyone in the U.S. will be able to buy Google Glass.
Google announced the plan last week. "Every day, we get requests from those of you who haven’t found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too," the company wrote in a blog post.
SEE ALSO: How Google Fumbled Glass — and How to Save It
Google Glass is not commercially available yet; it's been available only to Google Glass Explorers — in other words, only through a very limited beta-testing program.
Now, Google is opening up the program and folks in the U.S. will be able to get the Glass for $1500 + tax. Google has apologized to everyone else, saying it's "just not ready yet to bring Glass to other countries."
The price is steep, but at least Google will throw in frames or a shade of your choice.
To get the Glass, you need to be 18 years old, and you need to be a U.S. resident with a U.S. shipping address. Then, go to this address today, April 15, at 9am ET. Be fast, as the number of spots available is limited. You can also sign up for a reminder at the same address.
And, if you're wondering what Glass is good for, well, you can browse the web with it, you can create stop motion videos with it, take sneaky photos — hell, you can even have sex with it. Just don't be a Glasshole.

A heads up to anyone buying the Galaxy S5, wouldn't take chances deliberately putting it in water...
http://phandroid.com/2014/04/19/galaxy-s5-water-damage/
Ever since it was announced people have been asking- how waterproof is the Galaxy S5? As seen in our full review, its weather resistance is one of its best new features. Or at least it’s supposed to be. This morning I woke up to find my front and rear camera had some odd bubbles forming all over each lens.

Despite what Sammy says...I would still never deliberately subject the device to water exposure of that magnitude.
I don't think I've EVER had a phone fall from me into any water...toilet or otherwise.
Still, it's good to know that S5s have that feature.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of having flaps over charging parts, hassle for me. I guess wireless charging would be a solution

Agreed. My only concern with wireless though is the charging speed is slow from most reviews online.

Also consider the wear and tear of using that flap every day would probably affect the waterproofing of the phone

I have a flap over the charge port on my moto S11HD
Always worried that it would break off.
I use it everyday, surprised it has last this long. Must be really strong despite how fragile the flap looks.

Word Lens, The Real-Time Translation App, is Now Free
http://lifehacker.com/word-lens-the-real-time-translation-app-is-now-free-1579220195
Android/iOS: Word Lens, the app that can translate the words and language it sees in real time, is free to download today. P
Google has purchased Word Lens' parent company, Quest Visual, and their first move was making the app free to download. Additionally, all of the language packs added since it's release are available for free within the app too. We took a look at it ourselves back in 2010, and came away impressed with how well it worked. Hit the links below to download it and try it out for yourself.P

Google Wants To Bring The Best Moto X Feature to Every Android Phone
http://gizmodo.com/google-wants-to-bring-the-best-moto-x-feature-to-every-1584463323
One of the best features of the Moto X—besides that perfectly-sized screen—is its always-on listening capability. Nothing beats saying "OK, Google" and watching the device wake up from sleep to do your bidding. It works like magic, and if this Android Police report is true, it'll be coming to every Android phone before you know it.
When we first got our hands on the Moto X last week, we were way more impressed than we thought…
Read more
The report claims that Google is building always-listening functionality into Android as a whole, although it seems like your phone would need to be plugged in to wake the device up from sleep using your voice, at least initially:.
...the requirement may be a stop-gap while battery use is optimized overall. In other words capable hardware may suffer this limitation when the functionality is first released, but would likely gain always-on listening without the need for charging later, once battery usage is sorted.
If we do get this capability in every Android phone, it will be optimized for use in situations where you can't touch or see your phone, such as driving or biking. For instance, if you ask Google Now for weather, it won't simply display the weather card, it will actually read it out to you so that you can keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. And it might just save all your Google searches for you to look at later when you can look at your phone again.
Especially having sent Motorola off into Lenovo's arms early this year, it makes sense for Google to take its most innovative software features and share them with the rest of the Android universe. Now if only it can bring active notifications along for the ride as well, we'd have a whole lot to look forward to at I/O.

Interesting idea.....
http://www.androidauthority.com/google-kill-switch-next-version-android-395314/
...but if this isn't integrated at the hardware/chip-level, what's to stop a thief from just flashing a firmware (via Odin) without the included kill-switch functionality baked in?

This is a rare case where android's openness is a disadvantage. You're right. A thief would still be able to bypass but it will make things that much more difficult for a novice.

I like the idea. Doubt George the piper knows much about flashing firmware.
Just because we're familiar with such a feature doesn't mean everyone will be.

Google Cardboard Turns Your Android Into a DIY Virtual Reality Headset

Google Cardboard Turns Your Android Into a DIY Virtual Reality Headset
http://gizmodo.com/turn-your-android-into-a-virtual-reality-headset-with-g-1596026538
Want a virtual reality headset, but can't afford the hefty pricetag on most existing models (or to hold out for the future)? Google dropped an inexpensive solution today following its I/O keynote: Google Cardboard, an app that lets Android users transform their phones into VR headsets with the help of a DIY cardboard viewer.
It's not exactly the Oculus Rift, but who cares what the outside looks like if the virtual reality experience is any good? The Cardboard app lets users watch YouTube, virtually carouse on Google Street View or virtually scale the Himalayas with Google Earth, among other immersive demos. But first, you have to put your cardboard viewer together. Google provided directions to put together the viewer, which is made from cardboard, velcro, magnets, and lenses (NFC tag optional).

No, Google Isn't Going To Kill Its Nexus Devices

This news will have TriniSpartacus smiling....
http://readwrite.com/2014/06/26/google-nexus-android-silver#awesm=~oImla2JYyKQ23J
Rumors of the demise of Google's Nexus line of "pure Android" devices have been greatly exaggerated. When Google launches the official release of the new version Android L later this year, expect a new Nexus device as well.
True, Google is changing the way it rolls out high-end Android smartphones. It's working on a new program called Android Silver, in which Google would pay top manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony to build Android smartphones to its particular specifications; cellular carriers like AT&T and Verizon would then sell them in retail stores. Android Silver will likely debut next year.
But speculation around Android Silver has led to some reports that Google will scrap its popular Nexus line of Android smartphones and tablets and replace them with Silver devices. Turns out that those reports are basically wrong. The Nexus program will continue and Android users can expect to see a new Nexus device when Google releases Android L later this year.
Every time Google releases a new named and numbered version of Android, it also announces a new Nexus device, built by one of Google's top manufacturing partners like LG or Samsung. Dave Burke, the head of Android engineering and the Nexus program at Google, says that the company plans to keep doing just that.
"People just get excited by concepts and forget why we do things,” Burke told me in an interview. “We are still invested in Nexus.”
Burke would not discuss Silver. "Android Silver is not something that we are commenting on right now," he said. But the prospect of Silver doesn't mean that Nexus is going away.
"People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make," Burke said.
When Google's engineers write the open source code for new versions of Android, another team is also designing a Nexus device designed to take best advantage of Android's new features. The two development processes go hand-in-hand, and that's not going to change any time soon.
