Google's plans for the living room come into focus with a simple TV interface

Looks like another contender is coming to the rest of the set top boxes on the market, including Apple TV, Amazon’s Fire TV, and Roku....

http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/5/5584604/this-is-android-tv

Every so often, some enterprising computer company will claim they’ve finally fixed the TV. They’ll talk about how they’ve turned a dumb terminal into a smart computing platform that extends your work and play to a gigantic screen. Then, we’ll watch as the idea flops because they fail to line up content deals or wind up delivering a confusing, haphazard experience. That was the story of Google TV, which became the laughingstock of the industry after Google chairman Eric Schmidt bet that it would ship on the majority of new televisions in 2012. (He was sorely wrong.)

But what these companies seem to be realizing as their content deals fail is that they don’t need to “fix” TV quite yet. The proper opening salvo may simply be to put desirable content in front of people who use television the same way as ever.

Enter Android TV.

Can't say I'm surprised.

We all kinda knew FB would eventually adopt this approach...to try to be the 'one ring' solution for all social media interaction.

I need to start looking for a WhatsApp alternative yes.

At first I thought this was the same as the Android TV Exoon Pro posted in the other thread but after reading, this looks like something completely different. I wonder how Google is going to handle the trademark clash?

Android™ is a trademark of Google. Android TV™ is a Trademark of Exo Level LLC

Maybe buy out EXO Level LLC?

@ Virtue....been lamenting about apps with invasive permissions on Android since inception. Facebook isn't the only culprit. Waze is another prime offender.

To be fair, given the amount of personal data people store on the actual facebook service itself, the phone permissions should be the least of your worries. lol

They already have your name, data of birth, email, school, place of work, your significant other, family and friends, etc....

not to mention your pictures

hhahhaa

poetically said woody.

@ virtue,  yeah facebook is probably the worst of the worst but many other apps aren't far behind.

Waze has access to the following:
- Hardware controls (audio settings, audio record path, taking pictures and videos with the camera).
- Your location (via GPS & network-based sources).
- Network communication.
- Your personal information
- Storage (modify/delete USB & SD card contents)
- System tools (system's settings data).

Like the old saying goes.....after freeness....is lexington

@ Arc, just as the author of the article said, you can create a dummy profile and use that for facebook to expose yourself less. Also, you can install it on a second device that doesn't have all your critical information stored. I use my old Note 2 to play around with "suspect" apps to determine if they are epic enough to cough up my real info.

yup, don't forget waze as well

Whatsapp has pretty invasive permissions as well. It has this particularly scary one:

Quote
Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.

Will keep an eye out for any other major offenders.

Anyone tried Asphalt 8? It's surprisingly good and not plagued with IAPs, totally optional and it has online matchmaking. Only downside is that it eats up your battery fast, typical with such graphic intensive games.

I am hooked :) Running other players off the road is fun.

Galaxy S5 scores amazing on Phone Arena battery life test
« Reply #2017 on: April 13, 2014, 11:24:22 AM »
Looks good, when this tech heads to other phones it will be epic....

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Galaxy-S5-scores-amazing-on-our-battery-life-test-the-longest-lasting-flagship-has-the-endurance-of-a-tablet_id55077

Are you sitting down? You'd better be, as we have a new king of our battery life test, and it is none other than Samsung's Galaxy S5. It managed the whopping 8 hours and 38 minutes of screen-on time in our grueling battery endurance run, which is the best result we've seen so far from any flagship. It actually stopped just a few minutes shy of the Xperia C, or it would have been the phone with the longest battery life we've ever tested. For comparison, it lasts only 20 minutes less than the most enduring device we've measured - the Galaxy NotePRO - and is as long-lasting as the iPad Air, but those are tablets, with the respective gigantic battery capacities.

During the phone's unveiling event, Samsung promised up to 10 hours of Internet browsing, 12 hours of HD movie watching, or 21 hours of 3G talk time on a charge, and we can attest that the Galaxy S5 meets and exceeds those promises. Manufacturers, as well as most third party services, measure battery life with the screens set at about 150 nits of brightness, while our routine script is run at 200 nits, and features mixed browsing and media display patterns. Those include a lot of white background, too, which AMOLED screens draw the most power to display, and still the S5 managed to break the flagship record. How has Samsung done this, though?

The notable thing with the Galaxy S5 is that it breaks the flagship record with "only" a 2800 mAh battery, surpassing even phablets with their huge 3000+ mAh juicers. Thus, there must be more at play than capacity alone here, and Samsung might have utilized additional battery-saving techniques for the first time in the S5.

Remember LucidLogix's battery-saving optimizations that we wrote about not long ago? At the time we mentioned that Samsung has inked a deal for implementing the PowerXtend battery-saving algorithms in a yet-unknown device. Well, that mystery handset turns out to be none other than the Galaxy S5 flagship. The PowerXtend suite comprises of three proprietary algorithms, called WebXtend, NavXtend, and GameXtend. All of them rely on better hardware management and load-balancing that are supposed to extend the battery life on Android devices. GameXtend is the most interesting here, as it allows up to 50% better battery longevity, while NavXtend and WebXtend promise up to 25% savings. Despite that these are software algorithms, they have to be implemented at a system level by the manufacturer itself, which is precisely what Samsung has done with the S5. In that case, Lucid's PowerXtend implementation might be the culprit behind the jaw-dropping battery life stats that Samsung promises for the Galaxy S5, and which we can now confirm to be entirely true, as you can see in the graph below. We only hope that other Android phone makers will adopt the tech, too, as battery life is the thing users want to see improved in their smartphones the most.
