NVIDIA shows off Battlefield 3 running on Tegra 5
« Reply #1622 on: April 12, 2013, 04:04:57 PM »
Amazing stuff....

http://androidandme.com/2013/04/news/nvidia-shows-off-battlefield-3-running-on-tegra-5/

Most Android smartphones sold in the US this year will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, but next year should be a different story. NVIDIA will finally have a mobile chip with integrated LTE, called Tegra 4i, and their next generation chip codenamed Logan (aka Tegra 5) will offer a mobile GPU that is “multiple years ahead of the competition.”

This week at their Annual Investor Day, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang showed off what Logan could do by running a demo of Battlefield 3 and comparing it with the latest generation iPad. Logan is NVIDIA’s first mobile chip that features their Kepler GPU architecture, which supports DirectX 11 graphics.

The demo is quite impressive, but keep in mind we won’t see Tegra 5 in mobile devices for at least another year. Right now, we are still waiting on the first Tegra 4 device, Project Shield, to ship. NVIDIA says that they had originally planned to ship Tegra 4 by now, but they intentionally delayed the chip so they could put more resources on integrating LTE in Tegra 4i, and bring their Kepler GPU architecture to mobile.

It’s a shame we have to wait, but the hold-up should be worth it if I can play Battlefield 3 and other PC-class games on my mobile device sooner rather than later.

This looks promising

http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/04/18/apk-teardown-google-games-anyone-play-services-is-getting-real-time-and-turn-based-multiplayer-invitations-in-game-chat-lobbies-leaderboards-and-achievements/

We've got a good one for you today. A teardown of MyGlass, yes that's right, the Google Glass companion app, has given us what looks like the entire Google Games Service feature list. You just can't make this stuff up.The games service probably has nothing to do with Google Glass; Glass can't run complex apps. The Glass team accidentally shipped the full suite of Google Play Services with their new app, which is not normal. This included a never-before-seen backend for an extensive multiplayer gaming service, with just about every gaming feature you could possibly imagine.

Long overdue.

The multiplayer component to android games is very poor. IOS (Iphone and Ipad) has them beat and theirs isn't even good either.

We need PC level multiplayer and we need it now!

The devices are more than capable...well the modern ones at least (nexus, s3, note, note 2, etc...etc...)

Battlefield 3 on android / mobile

Where Messiah?

Just took a quick read of what's posted. According to that, we not going to see consumer devices capable of that for at "least" 2 years. And even then, im 100% certain that game will look like crap.

I startup uncharted 2 weekend, and I feel to puke, that game was literally hurting my eyes. I couldn't believe how far pc graphics outclass console. granted uncharted 2 is an old game, but still. Game look like I was trying to run a high end game on an old pc with no gpu with everything set to low.

All that to say, expect similar visual performance from b3 on mobile.
During which time, PC not going to be standing still. We have 2 next gen consoles poised to launch soon. And what NVidia doing with pc graphics just crazy.  By the time B3 make it to hand-helds, both PC and Console would dramatically surpass it in terms of graphics.

So wyatt, like I said before, there will always be a huge gap between handhelds and consoles, and then a huge gap between consoles and PCs. Consoles would only temporarily catch up during it's first year of launch, but time d following year PC does pass it no problem. But this time around, I don't think the PS4 and Xbox Next going to even approach PC class graphics (PC class meaning high end pc).

(All that said, I still think we are a very long time away from having life-like graphics, when unreal engine 4 games start hitting it go get significantly better, but still no where close imo).

----

Anyways, what I really check this thread for was to post this:

(P.S. Android still lags....doh flame meh lol.)

I agree with most of what you said.

I'll say though that current gen consoles are only just barely ahead of the power of today's cutting edge mpbile hardware. If you connect one of these phones/tablets to a tv and fire up a game, you'll see very little quality difference.

As for next gen consoles vs current mobile hardware, there's just no contest.

Thing is though, that consoles have a long product life cycle (6+ years). The pace at which mobile hardware is improving, I would not be surprised to see next gen consoles having mobile hardware nipping on their heels by holiday season 2015.

Did see the very minor stutters in the video. Still, very impressive performance for the monolith that is Touch Wiz.

Keep in mind Capt. From a hardware perspective, next gen console is not a lil bit, but ALOT better than current mobile hardware or hardware coming out in the next 2 years. And keep in mind, console graphics does rel improve over time, when developers get used to coding for the platform and maximizing the capabilities of it.

God of war 1 vs 2 on the PS2 is a perfect example. It takes a while for them to squeeze out the performance. So as much as consoles have a long life (5 years), there is a lot of room for growth within the same platform.

Enough so that I don't think mobile going to catch it. Maybe towards d end of d console life cycle. (Which is d case now with mobile vs console). But we go hadda wait and see how rapid mobile dev progress in the next few years.

I bet arcade owners thought the same thing.

Our arcade machines have vastly superior hardware to the nintendo and atari. We will keep advancing as well. The consoles will never catch up.

Look at them now.

Mark my words. Mobile coming for consoles sooner rather than later.

This new gen will be their last hurrah.

I supporting PC not console...., and arcades wasn't d multibillion dollar business consoles are now, don't and MS not going to juss roll over for mobile. U really think so? And what kill arcade not affecting console. What kill arcade is lack convenience. Consoles solved a problem and need. Exactly what hooking ur phone up to a tv solving that a console not already doing? And consoles cheaper than flagship phones. Arcade vs console was a completely different scenario, it does not apply to this battle. I won't even call it a battle. It have room for both.

lets tabulate it shall we?

Advantages of consoles over arcade:

1. Convenience - u can walk outside in your draws and play it
2. Cost effective - u get plenty more game time for less money
3. Online - you can play with millions and not have to smell stink swet.
4. Access to a dramatically larger content of games.
5. Can be played on a 100" screen if u want
6. Privacy and alone time with ur games
7. Whatever I miss

all arcade offer was better graphics.and d fact that u can see d person u fighting right next to u, the lan party effect (which consoles beat up as well)

now please list out d advantages of using my phone to replace my console.....(I'm still a PC gaming advocate eh, I not even buying d next ps4 or Xbox, doh see d point, PC have all d games and I could live without d few console exclusives, nuff game to play and significantly superior graphics.

Sweet @ doom 3

@ messiaah the mobile devices have all those same advantages over the console.

Note...the move to include some sort of tablet / touch device with future consoles.

Mobile already there.

With wii u....you can play Mario in the bedroom while kids watching the tv.

With mobile devices...you can game any damn where you please.

People are already investing in expensive mobile phones. Why buy another device if it can do it all.

Especially considering there will be more than one in the average household.

So fast forward five years.

My US$600 phone has 16gb of RAM, a processor and GPU that can run Battlefield 4, Starcraft 3 and DOTA 3

You think I really going and buy a console?

Hell, I may not even buy a PC.

My wife may have one as well, which she will use to play bejeweled 4 and zoo keeper battle dx squared

dread, I really didn't want to engage in this debate, hence my image.

But ........what is d primary reason u buy a new console? ill answer: Better Specs, to play Better Games.
Not just visual, but functional. Take borderlands 2 for instance, d PhysX in that game is phenominal. And with 3 GTX 680s I could barely run that game @ 2560*1600 with PhysX on High without getting FPS drops. Anything below 60fps for me is unacceptable.

So u upgrade your pc / buy new  console, in order to power the games of tomorrow. And in order to make bigger, better, smarter, prettier games, d industry needs hardware.

Why in the name of zues, would the industry want to make shittier uglier dumber games as their primary focus, just to run on android? Mobile is a secondary market. It not going to take d place of a primary market.

And when d time come, for mobile to run sc3, etc etc. Consoles/PCs will be running games that capable of significantly more than what the mobile is capable of.

Technology is not at a stand still because mobile advancing. Ppl not working on just mobile tech, they working on everything. It still have super computer clusters d size of citys around. Because evolution not happenin in a vacume.

As phones get better, PCs and Consoles simultaneously getting better too.

One can argue that a tablet can do most things a pc can other than gaming, video processin etc.
Tasks that require power.
High end gaming happens to be one of those things that requires more power. and to get better games, it going to continually require more and more power.

The more powerful they coul make tech, d better games we getting.
I saying now, it's impossible for a mobile phone to replace a console in 5 years.
Yes I say it's impossible.
We could bet money on it, im game. and in 5 years time, u have to pay up.

It makes no technological sense, what u saying.
D phone does not have d same advantages over consoles that d console have over the arcade.
D ONLY!!!!! thing a phone can do that a console cant, is be mobile. that's it.
Where all d storage coming from on a phone to run them games.?
Man go hadda hook up external bluray players to they phone now.

Anyways, enough rambling. I refer you to my picard picture I posted earlier

And yes@ woodyear, you said what I say in much less words, 1 liner for the win. 100% @ woodyear.

@wyatt - *insert picard pic here*

This is one of those rare times that I agree with Messiaah.

Mobile is advancing rapidly.  Hell, the tech is there NOW to produce some 'top-tier, AAA' games for phones/tablets.
The problem is, you'll need a LOT of accessories to truly harness the power of that tech to make 'top-tier, AAA' gaming on a mobile device any kind of viable.
You can only do do much with a touch screen.  When you have all that stuff hooked up, guess what...it's no longer mobile.  :laughing7:
Now you're in console territory...and the console will do everything better...well, except make/take calls.  :laughing7:

I can't see myself saying 'I think I'll buy this phone instead of this console to play games' for the foreseeable future.
Ditto for considering a choice between a new phone/tablet and a new PC.  :laughing7:

If/when there's some gigantic leap in mobile tech that will skew this outlook, then I'm all for it.
