nice

just got an update on the droid 4. Apparently its going to be available for cheap on Verizon.

http://nvonews.com/2012/01/28/motorola-droid-4-on-verizon-to-be-available-for-199-99/

I hope that translates into cheaper prices to us international customers by way of ebay/etc...

Unfortunately it still isn't out for sale @ last google search. mcmcmc

Slightly considering the HTC Desire Z as a temporary droid to tide me over till the Droid 4 hits the market....but its release (the droid 4) seems to be so close that I'm tempted to just wait another month and see

Quote
Motorola Droid 4 on Verizon to be available for $199.99. Here is another good news for tight-fisted smartphone geeks. After the price cut on Droid Razr, now Droid 4 can also be had for $199.99 on contract. This surprise news was leaked on a recent MAP list obtained by Droid-Life.

The price cuts now are said to become a regular feature, as per a Verizon representative during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. Typically Verizon launches 4G LTE devices at $299.99, but recent launches of LG Spectrum came at the markedly lower price tag of $199.99.

Now for the specs of the smartphone that has become this affordable. DROID 4 features a 4-inch HD display with a resolution of 540-by-960-pixel. Under this is packed a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Its memory details are 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Packing a keyboard and LTE support, it is surprisingly thin at 5.0 by 2.7 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.3 ounces. This is not Razr league, but it is far lighter than expected.

The shape of the phone makes it fit snugly in the palms, even if the keyboard is open. Another claim by Motorola that many would run to test is that the device is enclosed in a water-repellant nanocoating.

It has an 8-megapixel camera on the back with 1080p video recording and 4G LTE as the connectivity bit. It also features a free microSD memory card slot, and a mirroring mode that allows easy viewing of images or video on an HDTV.

An added feature is the 5-row keyboard that is barely half-an-inch thick – a real Tom Thumb marvel. The chiclet-style keys are said (by Motorola itself) to mimic a laptop keyboard. The sharp and precise shapes of the laser cut make it very easy for the quick-typing fingers. They are also coated in soft touch plastic and have edge-lit feature that make typing in the dark no issue at all.

Currently test-driving the just-recently-leaked XXLP6 version of ICS 4.0.3.

All I can say is for now is 'where have you BEEN all my life?  :laughing7:

Running it stock, but rooted, so I can run all my apps.  Even so, not everything works,
but Android is always a work in progress, but it's still head and shoulders above Gingerbread.  Faster too.

Things I like:

 - UI speed, and responsiveness
 - Face unlock
 - The way you can now swipe away individual notifications
 - The redesigned status bar
 - Google Voice Talk actually recognizes my voice a little more accurately now
 - Redesigned settings menu.  There's 'Data Usage' functionality built-in now.  Nice

Things I don't like (or not working):

 - Google Earth not working
 - My favourite voice control app (Choice Dialer+) not working
 - FM radio not working (yet)
 - Can't get 'Contacts' to display exactly what I want (well, actually, I can.  It just wont keep the setting for some reason)

It isn't perfect (yet) but I'm confident all these issues will be ironed out in a few weeks time when the official SGS2 firmware hits.
I'm satisfied with it as it is to use it as a 'daily driver' until Samsung, and by extension, the gods at XDA, get their act together.

Android Trojans downloaded by millions, still on Android Market
By Jon Brodkin | Published about an hour ago
Symantec last week identified 13 new malicious applications on the Android Market, saying the combined download figures—reportedly up to 5 million—make it "the highest distribution of any malware identified so far this year." The applications use Android.Counterclank, which Symantec says is "a bot-like threat that can receive commands to carry out certain actions, as well as steal information from the device."

We found six of the apps from three publishers still appearing on the Android market Monday morning. Symantec calls Android.Counterclank a Trojan, and Google's Android Market policies specifically ban Trojans and other types of malware. On the other hand, Symantec classifies Android.Counterclank as having "very low" risk, and the app publishers barely seem interested in hiding the programs' capabilities. Users can simply uninstall the application to remove the threat.

One such app identified by Symantec as a Trojan contains "write browser's history and bookmarks" under its list of permissions. This is coupled with a generic warning from Google that "Malicious applications can use this to erase or modify your Browser's data." Another app on Symantec's list is "Deal or BE Millionaire," and one user review from more than two weeks ago warns, "beware malware... every time you run this game, a 'search' icon gets added randomly to one of your screens. I keep deleting the icon, but it always reappears. If you tap the icon you get a page that looks suspiciously like the Google search page." Symantec says the presence of the search icon on the home screen is one sign of Android.Counterclank infection.

Symantec says the apps can "copy bookmarks on the device, copy opt out details, copy push notifications, copy shortcuts, identify the last executed command, modify the browser's home page, steal build information," and retrieve device data such as the Android ID, MAC address and SIM serial number. We've asked Google if the company plans to remove all of these apps from the Market and will provide an update as we get new information.

UPDATE: As one commenter points out, Lookout Mobile Security has a different take on the matter, that Android.Counterclank is not malware but "an aggressive form of an ad network." While these apps contain software that is annoying and that average users do not want, Lookout notes that it isn't designed to commit identity theft or financial fraud.

Yeah as with everything else use caution and common sense when downloading apps. I recommend using a simple free app called "addons detector" to weed out any installed apps with malware.
