Very impressive.

You gonna use it as a HTPC now?

Might make for an interesting "remote control"

You never know.  It could very well render the HTPC somewhat obsolete.

I was streaming Netflix and YouTube HD videos with aplomb, devoid of any glitching or stuttering.

@ Woodyear... I got em on Ebay, but Amazon has em as well.

kick ass @ HTPC

Color me impressed once again

Mobile gaming has been a fast growing market, especially since Apple's App Store propelled game companies and developers to dizzying heights once they'd gotten the ball rolling (Rovio's 51st title became pretty popular, you might know it).

So far however, the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY has really been the only device with the mobile gamer truly in mind especially on Android. A new peripheral however, hopes to level the playing field somewhat with a classic D-pad, four button, shoulder button configuration, one that retro games will know and love.

Meet the Gametel Gaming Controller, maker Fructel's solution for mobile gamers who didn't opt for a PLAY but want a more engrossing mobile gaming experience on an Android device.

Designed to work on any droid running Eclair 2.1.1 and up, you can attach your device via the spring-loaded bracket on top, connect the controller via Bluetooth and you're away. With battery life said to be around the 9 hour mark, recharging shouldn't be too much of a hassle and the pad is already compatible with 50 or so titles already available on the Android Market.

With the hardware in most mid/high-end Android devices as it is now and with many of them toting HDMI or wireless output to a bigger screen too, this is just another step to making the phone a more serious gaming platform, a fact that the likes Sony and Nintendo's PS Vita and 3DS are no doubt very much aware of.

The Gametel Controller will retail for £49.95 (about $70) but won't be available until December. I'd suggest that the best challenge would be to put two mobile gamers head-to-head, one using an Xperia PLAY, the other using the Gametel with a best of three to the death, but maybe that's just my competitive gamer coming out.

What do you think? What kinds of gamers are you? Is the Gametel a worthy peripheral for the mobile gaming community, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

way, I now see this Preston.

Lenovo shows off K91 Smart TV, world's first with Android 4.0
« Reply #586 on: January 09, 2012, 04:54:54 PM »
Chinese technology giant Lenovo, currently the world number two producer of notebooks, has beaten Apple to the jump in its rumored TV ambitions by releasing their own set : the K91 Smart TV. Available for viewing at this year’s CES, the device will initially only be available in China, with worldwide availability expected shortly.

The slightly unexpected device from the Chinese manufacturer will provide typical TV functionality with its 55-inch display, combined with what is claimed to be console-quality gaming capabilities. In a move that trumps even Google’s own TV offerings, the new TV includes Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 OS, and will recognize voice commands. The firm says the K91 unites all three smart TV functions by offering videos on demand, internet applications and traditional TV programs.

It packs a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8060 dual core processor, a 1920x1080 pixel IPS LED backlit display, 3D FPR technology that provides a flicker-free 3D picture, up to 240Hz refresh rate and fully integrated wireless B/G/N support. Also included is an integrated 5 megapixel webcam, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage, plus the usual HDMI connectors and DLNA support. Meanwhile, the remote control has a gamepad style design, with a touchpad and five-way directional pad as well as a motion sensor.

The company moved away from the more typically used Chromium OS in order to take advantage of Ice Cream Sandwich's facial recognition features for screen unlocking, natural language processing (NLP) and video interaction through the integrated webcam. This is literally the first smart TV to incorporate a dual core Snapdragon dual core processor and run Google’s Android 4.0 operating system.

I know alot of forums swear this works but it seems to have been debunked by this Google engineer...

http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/

There you have it, in the title. Google engineer Dianne Hackborn, who has previously explained Android’s hardware acceleration, took to Google+ again to clarify some myths about the Android operating system. This time, it’s a point of common advice that you’ll see in virtually every FAQ thread about custom ROMs and flashing: wiping battery stats in order to improve battery life.

The reasoning behind that piece of advice was something like this: If you, at some point, did not charge your Android device fully (for example, only to 80%), it would supposedly remember that battery level as “fully charged” – in this case, you’d only ever get to use 80% of your battery, which is of course less than optimal. So, if you wipe the battery stats, usually done in ClockWord Mod Recovery, the device would “forget” the previous level, here 80%, and instead charge to the full 100% once again, thereby re-calibrating the battery. Or, as Hackborn puts it in more technical terms:

The battery indicator in the status/notification bar is a reflection of the batterystats.bin file in the data/system/ directory.

However, as she explains, that’s not the case. Because those battery stats, stored in the batterystats.bin file, are only used to maintain information about what is using the battery when not recharging. That is, it essentially holds the information displayed in the Settings > Battery screen. Nothing more, nothing less. Thus:

It has no impact on the current battery level shown to you.

It has no impact on your battery life.

What’s more, you’ve probably noticed that the battery usage data is reset once you recharge your device anyway. From this you can correctly deduce that the battery stats are wiped as well – every time your device is recharged. More or less every day. If there was any effect, you would’ve noticed it without going into recovery and doing that stuff. Typical placebo, eh?

Is that ICS stable on your phone?

The Samsung devs taking their sweet time with it, and it launched so long now.

I want to make sure everything working before I take the plunge.

Bluetooth remains non-functional in this AOSP version. Camera and pretty much everything else works pretty well. Very stable. I've been using ICS as a daily driver, in one form or another since I got this phone.

HTC has also 'leaked' a fully working ICS 4.03 rom with minor bugs which is also blazing fast in spite of all the Sense bloat.

AOSP = Android Open Source Project, stock Google experience. Sense = HTC Skin

Gingerbread is running pretty nicely for now.  I'll wait.  :)

Well this is on HTC eh, and only on the AOSP roms as the HTC released ICS roms are fully functional.

I'm surprised that with Samsung's popularity they havent followed suit with releasing fully working roms of their own, but i've come to expect that kind of slow poke behaviour from Samsung, which is why I staying away from them at all costs.
