Another One Bites The Dust:

Microsoft and Samsung have announced a cross-patenting deal that will see the Korean firm pay royalties for every Android smartphone and tablet it sells, as well as greater collaboration on Windows Phone devices. The license agreement – which Microsoft describes as evidence of “a clear path forward” for Google and others who have complained of the impact of patents on Android’s development – means that Microsoft collects cash from two of the largest Android device producers around, Samsung and HTC, leaving Motorola as the obvious missing link.

“Together with the license agreement signed last year with HTC, today’s agreement with Samsung means that the top two Android handset manufacturers in the United States have now acquired licenses to Microsoft’s patent portfolio. These two companies together accounted for more than half of all Android phones sold in the U.S. over the past year. That leaves Motorola Mobility, with which Microsoft is currently in litigation, as the only major Android smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. without a license” Brad Smith & Horacio Gutierrez, General Counsel & Deputy General Counsel, Microsoft

Samsung has agreed not only to commit to Windows Phone as a platform for future devices, but to collaborate with Microsoft on the marketing of the OS. Earlier this week the company announced the Samsung Omnia W, its latest Windows Phone 7 handset and one running Mango out of the box, while another model, the Focus S, has been seen in recent leaked photos.

“Some carriers have called for companies to enter into precisely these types of agreements to address the patent issues that are important to the mobile marketplace” Microsoft’s general counsel suggests. “This is how companies have dealt with prior patent issues relating to radio and media technologies for mobile devices. As today’s announcement illustrates, we have now done this for software technologies as well.”

Whether Google will agree that giving in to Microsoft’s licensing demands is the best way forward for OEMs using Android remains to be seen. Most telling, perhaps, will be how the company handles its new acquisition, Motorola Mobility, and whether the companies can hash out a licensing deal to tie up those last loose Android ends.

Might get one of these yes...

http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/28/amazon-unveils-200-kindle-fire-tablet-99-kindle-touch-ereader-79-kindle/

During a press event in New York City on Wednesday, Amazon took the wraps off of its $200 Kindle Fire tablet. The Kindle Fire is equipped with a 7-inch display and will have access to all of Amazon’s services including AmazonMP3, Amazon Prime, Amazon Kindle, Amazon Instant Video and the Amazon AppStore. The tablet is powered by a dual-core processor and weighs 14.6 ounces. Customers can pre-order the Kindle Fire today and it will ship in November. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos also unveiled a brand new version of his company’s popular eReader, dubbed the Kindle touch. The $99 Kindle touch is equipped with an infrared layer on top of the E-Ink display to help avoid with any interference while reading. It also has Amazon’s EasyReach technology for turning pages by tapping the screen in specific areas. In addition, an X-Ray feature allows users to view where and when certain characters or places take place in a book. Amazon will also sell a separate Kindle touch 3G model for $149. Pre-orders for the Kindle touch eReader begin today and will ship by November 21st. Finally, Bezos announced a new standard Kindle for $79 that does not offer a touchscreen. It is available now and will also ship today.

The price points are fantastic.

I already have one kindle and an ipad2 but rest assured, will be getting one of these as well.

By Christmas if not before.

Brilliant, brilliant device.

Totally agreed arc, will sell like hot cakes.

My main issue with Amazon is the licensing of video content to places outside the US. I figure for $80us a year they could more than afford to do that.

As I cannot use this feature which from what i've heard is veru good, I am now forced to terminate my Amazon Prime membership. Just cannot pay for features I cannot get.

I'll continue to buy stuff from them but pay for expedited shipping like everyone else.

Nice device though. Personally, still cannot see the need for a standalone tablet, even if its just $200 us.

One of my friends was encouraging me to go Prime just for the shipping. I guess it depends on how much stuff you order. I usually just wait the extra days for my stuff with the free super saver shipping. I am cheap like that...

I like the added touch feature and the fact that it is even cheaper!! Had gotten one for moms and she loved it!!! Now I feeling to get one for me and my gf especially at that price!!

As usual we keep getting screwed as my co-worker has one and says the 3g works when she goes to Barbados but nothing here (great job service providers) so I would avoid that like the plague (3G) that is and yes my prime membership on amazon even though give me offers for stuff like songs etc are all blocked because of our location.....

My Prime membership is for faster shipping yes and the fact that you can put other ppl on it, would make it good value for money. To each his own yes but Kindle kicks arse everyday!!

@awesome

Book readers like myself will see the benefit of a standalone tablet as an e-reader.

That alone is justification in of itself.

All the rest of features are gravy.

Prime rocks. Its a bit expensive though so getting it bundled kicks serious ass.

Hate that our region gets second class citizen treatment. We just don't have the numbers apparently. We need more people online, making their voices heard and lobbying.

I've tried the 3G? (whispernet?) on the Kindle in Trinidad, worked fine.

Whispernet and 3g are two different things. 3g support is a communication radio installed on the device for use with a plan from your local carrier while whispernet is Amazon's worldwide reaching service for syncing content that uses a specialised, probably proprietary 3g radio.

But yeah, I hear yuh Wyatt, wasnt really throwing anything your way. I'm not a big ebook reader and all the ebooks I do have are easily readable on my phone, thus my comment about the tablet.

Yeah @ sucks abt the content. $80 was a decent deal when I used to buy a lot of stuff but now that i've cut back, I am suddenly seeing better ways to spend that money, especially if I can't use the media content.

My mistake I was referring to 2G. When will this country see high speed on mobile networks (that is actually affordable)? lol

Some people on this forum suggest that it is coming but are not willing to put forth details.

The way things go in Trinidad, I do not think we will see 4g at affordable prices within the nexy 5 years.

Amazon prime has more than been worth it for me. I have saved endless. Its pretty sweet between having prime and ezone. I ordered a m4 SSD drive Tuesday  and collected it yesterday afternoon from ezone.

@Awesome its not really Amazon's fault for blocking videos by region. It has to do more with the content holders. However if you use the unblockus that I use for netflix it also allows access to Prime videos. I have never played around much with the prime videos but my friend with an unblockus account views the videos on his Roku.
