Mobile Tech World:

Google defends itself against Microsoft: Still sounds childish

I’m starting to think that the folks in Mountain view really think that they live in a parallel universe. Google’s Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond has decided to post another letter attacking Microsoft following last night’s debacle. He either didn’t expect Microsoft to enter the ring or simply thought that it was ok to publicly talk trash about Apple, Oracle and Microsoft. The end result is unfortunately still the same:Google sounds like a whiny little brat and should seriously re-think it’s PR strategy.

Today’s letter claims that the Mountain View search giant didn’t fall for Microsoft evil trap when it was offered to jointly bid for Novell’s patent last year and that the DOJ’s decision to require the winning party to provided a license to the open source community is proof that the three companies are in it to kill the poor Android robot. Once again it didn’t take long for Microsoft PR team to reply here, here, here and here. Yesterday the patents in question were “bbogus” but today they are not ?

This is seriously getting ridiculous especially coming from a big company like Google. Let the products speak for themselves and the lawyers handle the messy behind the scene business.

 :hello:

The 15 Best Android Games

Never heard of a few of these games

http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/218282/the-15-best-android-games/

Quote
The Android platform has picked up steam since its 2008 debut, becoming the leading mobile platform. Over time, it's built a deep catalog of games, but it's hard to tell what's worth your time. To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together a list of the best Android games you can buy.

Before getting into the list, let it be said that many of these Android games offer free, lite versions, so we encourage you to give many of them a try before you commit the cash. Also, since Android is a platform fragmented by so many different devices, not every Android game is guaranteed to work on your Android phone. All of these games were played and tested on a Motorola Droid X, using version 2.2 of the Android software. Additionally, some Android games fluctuate in price depending on their region of sale.

Good news folks, I got my usb jig and was able to put my captivate into download mode with no problems. This could come in handy for those that tinker with alot of roms, I'm sure glad I got one :)

This is what I am talking about

Also I am a big fan of camera apps on smartphones since the cameras can do so much with the right software. Check out this cool panorama app.

http://techcrunch.com/2011/07/29/360-teliportme-brings-its-killer-panorama-app-to-android-oh-and-it-works-on-over-200-phones/

360 allows its users to quickly take high quality panoramas, which they can then view on the app’s 3D viewer. Users can share panoramas via Facebook and Twitter, as well as view, comment, and “like” photos taken by people all over the world on 360′s public realtime feed. The app also taps into the phone’s location to allow users to discover other people using 360 in close proximity, using its “Around Me” option.

Finally made the jump to CyanogenMod7.  Really great ROM once you have evrything dialed in.  Even better in terms of performance once you have everything dialed in.

...oh and Woody, we seriously still have to test this new Skype out eh.

Yeah have to download Skype since I am starting from scratch with CM7. So far I've had no problems with CM7. The only thing I miss is the touchwiz camera, though CameraZoomFX (http://www.androidslide.com/) is a pretty good third party app with some nice features.

I've been playing around with my wife's HTC Aria and found a foolproof way for anyone to sideload apks, root isn't required (this is great for noobs)

http://www.androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine

Quote
Sideload Android apps all you want with the Sideload Wonder Machine

When it comes to installing Android applications, there are two ways of going about it. The most popular, of course, is directly through the Android Market. And that's how most of us do it. But from time to time we need to be able to sideload apps. Maybe you purchased it directly from a developer or some other perfectly legitimate method.

Or maybe *ahem* your phone doesn't allow you to directly sideload apps, for whatever reason. And that's where the Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine comes in. We've rigged up a simple Windows program that allows you to install any .apk file (that's the extension for an Android app) via your computer. It's completely legit -- nobody's going to track you down and take away your phone -- it's completely free (and open source!)  and now you're back on the same playing field as everybody else, no rooting necessary.

Titanium Backup. Program rivals anything i've seen (even on PC) in terms of ease and effectiveness of backing up and restoring of apps, data and settings. Free download on the market, paid version adding some features like  seamless batch restore (apps install automatically without having to press install for each one).

I paid the 8 or 9 us for it because it is THAT bloody good, especially for someone like me who changes roms like draws and wants to quickly recover apps and settings. You need to be rooted though...

Google Buys Motorola Mobility For $12.5B, Says “Android Will Stay Open”
« Reply #437 on: August 15, 2011, 03:53:41 PM »

http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/15/breaking-google-buys-motorola-for-12-5-billion/

Google just announced that it is acquiring Motorola Mobility. The search and online advertising company is buying the company for approximately $12.5 billion (or $40 per share), in cash. The price represents a premium of 63 percent to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares last Friday. Google had about $39 billion in cash at last count.

Here’s the other important part of the PR (the why, and what happens to Android now):

The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.

In a blog post, Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page writes that Google has acquired Motorola not only because of its strength in Android smartphones and devices, but also for being a “market leader in the home devices and video solutions business.”

It’s also a move to build up the company’s patent portfolio, he adds, as it will “enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies”.

According to Motorola Mobility’s website, the company holds approximately 14,600 granted patents and 6,700 pending patent applications, worldwide, as of January 2011. Update: You can find updated numbers on this – based on the conference call – in our follow-up post.

Motorola Mobility is what used to be the Mobile Devices division of Motorola until January 2011.

A few years ago, Motorola bet its future in the mobile devices market by going full Android, launching the “Droid” – initially on the Verizon network – on November 6, 2009. The “Droid X” and “Droid 2″ followed in 2010.

Big question now is: how will HTC, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Acer, Lenovo and other Android device makers respond to this news? Update: Google points out some of them already have.

We’re jumping on the conference call soon, and doing thorough analysis later. For now, whoa.

Full press release:

Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

Combination will Supercharge Android, Enhance Competition, and Offer Wonderful User Experiences

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. & LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Google will acquire Motorola Mobility for $40.00 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion, a premium of 63% to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday, August 12, 2011. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies.

“Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.”

Larry Page, CEO of Google, said, “Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.”

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, said, “This transaction offers significant value for Motorola Mobility’s stockholders and provides compelling new opportunities for our employees, customers, and partners around the world. We have shared a productive partnership with Google to advance the Android platform, and now through this combination we will be able to do even more to innovate and deliver outstanding mobility solutions across our mobile devices and home businesses.”

Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google, said, “We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem. However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices.”

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals in the US, the European Union and other jurisdictions, and the approval of Motorola Mobility’s stockholders. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2011 or early 2012.
