For the price bmobile has this for, i'd get this for someone just getting into smartphones.

you want to sour the people on smart phones one time awhat lol..

imagine coming from a normal phone that getting things done to a big ole 5.3 inch device that will probably frustrate you with lag and crashes

i think there are better options for introducing someone to smart phones...

im sure the blu has a place somewhere but i wouldnt recommend it for new users

It really depends on what said 'new user' intends to do with the phone, I can say its SH1T sure better than I did when I bought a BB, which was the most frustrating move I ever made as far as a phone goes. Ppl could do ALOT worse than a Blu 5.3. That aside:

Yeah the price not bad, probably not a good choice for the power users in here though hehe.

i said new smart phone users though... buying a BB is moving linear :)... in some cases even downward from a "normal" phone..

and yea awesome said as much.. it won't cut it atall for power users.. but i dont think it will cut it for new smart phone users either

As a 'budget' Android device, I'd say the price is 'OK'.
I'd actually like to put one of these through it's paces for a few days to see just how capable it is.

I'm willing to look at this without my 'Power-User Glasses'...which I suspect most of you aren't doing.   :/

Yes you mentioned 'new users' however as with many ppl unfamiliar with a new platform, they aren't aware of what the phone is ultimately capable of and don't know what to expect. Thus depending on what they intend to use it for it may or may not be a good phone to introduce someone to android with. For instance, a casual user that will use the browser, play a few games, watch youtube, check email, make calls, etc. What you might call a 'average' user, I am sure the phone will more than suffice.
If it's a new user with a propensity to dig and mess with phones aka a 'new power user' then the answer is no, though in the least it will be a cheap option for them to start messing with, worst case is you brick it, but it wouldn't have been a devastating loss like a 4000+ $ GS3. I hope that clarifies my point.

And yes buying a bb is linear AT BEST, diminishing at the worst.

The local price is fantastic for those specs

5.3" is huge!

I can't wait for an ICS version with a more reasonably sized screen before introducing the rest of the family to the android platform.

adios bb

This is what I'd hoped to see happen with android, namely....."no name" manufacturers putting out decent, low cost phones based on the OS.

I've been living with my Galaxy Nexus for some months now and it is better than my old BlackBerry bold (still missing the physical keyboard)

but it feels a little like a promissory note. Like they are 95% there and just need a little more oomph and stability to be golden.

I expect the next nexus device to achieve both OS and hardware perfection. To hit that point of diminishing returns.

wintry i dont think u fully understand the point im trying to make...

im saying.. for that typical user, the difficulties in using the phone (and im anticipating slow performance and plenty crashing, remember that)... it will more than like frustrate the user, and paint a bad picture for smart phones in general...

if you still dont understand i will use this analogy...

someone accustomed to traveling by bus... it gets them to where they want to go.. but they want the added convenience and additional benefits that owning a car provides, but the car they provide (though it may have some entertaining features), constantly breaks down and gets them to there destination at a much slower pace... ultimately they will get fedup of it and say screw that i going back to traveling...

ppl that moving from a small phone that does phone stuff good, moving to this huge device thats going to be slow and buggy, will like the nice new features, but will get frustrated with the drawbacks

mind you, all this is based on my assessment that the device will be slow and buggy... which is a deduction based on previous lower end handsets.... i could very well be wrong and this device could be a total hit...

will wait for arcmans hands on to determine that doh

Judging from the Amazon reviews it actually looking decent...

http://www.amazon.com/Studio-Unlocked-Support-MicroSD-Expandable/dp/B006VVYSWI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339701979&sr=8-1

"First off, lets get the inevitable comparison to the Samsung Note out of the way...it has nothing other than the OS type and the exact same sized screen at 5.3" and the same sized battery. That's it. Digging further, I can honestly say that that isn't a bad thing, not at all. The Note is aimed at folks who wan't to be on the bleeding edge, with its dual core processor and Super AMOLED HD screen, and that's fine with me. The overlay that Samsung uses over its version of Gingerbread(2.3.5) is a nicely done, if overly complicated for every day daily use. I like the Studio's lower resolution screen(800x480), it is a fine display with nice bright colors and decent viewing angles...and a whole lot less power drainage from it's 2500 mah battery. Also the Studio uses a deceptively low powered chipset, the MediaTek MT6573, which is single core and runs at a seemingly under powered 633mhz. I have to say, though, that in real world use, that it runs very well indeed at that speed. Everything I tried, from Gameloft games to full on web browsing and everything in between this chipset handled with aplomb. Never did it feel under powered, and never did I wish for just a bit more juice...it simply handled every day use with ease. The true benefit of this is better battery life across the board compared to the Note.

I eeked out a full two days using my Studio before the battery insisted I charge it, and that included a ton of gaming(more hours than I'll admit to ;-) ), hours of video watching, and massive amounts of phone use, an easy 10 plus hours each day...I never let up on it seeing how far I could take it, and boy did it take it! I've never had an Android phone go so long between charges on its included battery. But that isn't the best thing, not by a long shot. BLU chose to go with a plain, unaltered version of Gingerbread(2.3.5),just like Google does with it's Nexus series. The clean, simple interface was a breath of fresh air compared to all the custom U I's that the big guys shove down our throats. Simple is better, period. Everything just flowed on the Studio, no lag or stuttering was experienced at all. I downloaded exactly what I wanted, in my case I used Launcher Pro Plus for my launcher, and used a small amount of apps that made my life easier, no need to get rid of a ton of unwanted apps that the big guys insisted I needed. As a phone, the large screen made texting a breeze for my huge thumbs, I never had it so good in that department! The nice Capacitive screen was easy to use and worked every bit as nice as my very expensive unlocked phones from the big guys. Blutooth worked fine as did its built in A-GPS, another nice surprise. It has a decent 5mp camera with flash on the back, and a so-so VGA camera on the front, but at least it includes one. In fact, none of the hardware felt cheap or poorly designed, and that turned out to be my biggest surprise of all."

Thats a very nice phone and they certainly got it quickly but their claim of being the best network in the country is ludicrous at best.

Selling bleeding edge smartphones capable of blazing fast wireless connectivity...and yet only offer EDGE that moves (on a good day) as fast as a one legged midget.

TSTT have d money and resources to destroy both digicel and flow. They just dont need too because despite d competition they profits are ludicrously high, and they just dam lazy and dont have to do anything, they making money.

When d competition really start to dig into they profits, then they go do something about it.
Men scratching ass on they fiber implementation, and they 4g network would easily destroy digi's.

They just dont HAVE to do it right now, so salt for everybody, and i fear it's going to be like tht for a while again. Because flow expereining far too many outages that im comfortable with lately (you shouldn't be having outages atal), and digicel 4g now getting rolling but they dont have enough subscribers to pose a threat to TSTT. TSTT own d land line market which is still used very heavily, and they have majority marketshare in cells as well. It going to take alot more out of both digi and flow, to make tstt swet to d point they start offering proper technology. (They get some competition up d islands, and TSTT wtfpwn everybody in tech. Cayman, Jamaica, Barbados, tstt 4g and cell services juss ripping everybody to shreds, they stronghold in trini way too strong because of government owning a large percentage doh, so its going to take longer for trini to get in gear, unfortunately, and it sucks because out of all d caribbean islands, trini capable of being d best in terms of mobile tech, or tech in general for that matter.)

Sigh, is it too much to ask for ah 100/100 fiber to yuh house at a reasonable price? sigh.

Ok, all android hating aside, this shit is bad:

Samsung Tectiles–We need this for Windows Phone 8

Samsung has introduced programmable NFC stickers for use with their Samsung Galaxy S III, and it demonstrates the potential for the technology for adding location-based actions to any NFC-equipped smartphone.

Samsung is selling the Tectiles NFC stickers for $14.99 for 5, making it pretty affordable to add programmable location-based actions to your phone.

NFC will be built into Windows Phone 8, and should be a very common feature.  Hopefully Microsoft will also be looking at allowing users to make the most of the technology themselves, rather than waiting for companies to deploy the technology rather slowly around the world.

What apps you've put on your phone thus far Mez?

I've got Amazon Kindle, Notes, Andro Zip (file manager and for unzipping) and Mx Player

oh and also Sketch and Draw. Great app for some free hand doodles. Though I can't draw for ish, it comes in handy doing rough floor plans and such on the road.

Nice pick there mez you won't be disappointed.

I'd be jealous if it had like a 5.5 inch screen but 4.8 is simply too small.

This looks interesting, could be a possible upgrade to my Galaxy note....

http://thedroidguy.com/2012/06/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-with-flexible-display-and-12-mp-camera/

Samsung has been releasing some news about flexible or bendable displays for some time now, and we have been hoping that we would have smart phones with flexible displays in our hands very soon. Rumors also say that the South Korean smart phone giant will be releasing a smart phone with flexible display some time this year. And new rumors say that this is going to be the next version of the Galaxy Note.

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Note II would come with a flexible display and some more goodies. The story does seem very interesting and sometimes even mouth watering. According to the rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Note II will have a quad core 1.4 GHz processor and Exynos chipset, 1.5 GB or RAM, and an awesome 5.3 inch Super AMOLED flexible display. Not just that, but the smart phone would also feature a 12 mega pixel camera and run the yet to be released Android 5.0, code named Jelly Bean.
