Cyanogen had quite a few of the features already.

We've taken our first look at Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and we like what we see—but it'll be awhile before most devices get their hands on it. With the right mix of apps, tweaks, and even a custom ROM or two, you can get a lot of what promises to Ice Cream Sandwich great right now. Here's how.

Seeing as this IS the Android thread and i be a smart phone n00b, I had a few questions:

1. How hard is it to unlock an Android phone
2. What is the minimum specs (core speed, ram, storage) that I SHOULD want
3. Which is the best brand HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc
4. What to avoid for first time buyers
5. Should I wait for the Nokia WP7 phones before I buy an android
6. 3G or 4G?

6. 3G or 4G?

Seeing as this IS the Android thread and i be a smart phone n00b, I had a few questions:

1. How hard is it to unlock an Android phone

A: Very easy, depending on the phone itself and your ability to read, understand and follow instructions to the letter. Stick to more popular phones to have a better chance of more community dev support.

2. What is the minimum specs (core speed, ram, storage) that I SHOULD want

A: For future proofing, you'll want at least a dual core 1ghz device with 768-1gb ram, for all platforms.

3. Which is the best brand HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc

A: Very subjective. Depends on who you ask. I like HTC's solid construction but i'm starting to like Samsung for their higher than average specs. I prefer HTC's Sense for Android over Samsung TouchWiz but with ICS, im going vanilla anyway so it matters not.

4. What to avoid for first time buyers

A: Do plenty of research on all platforms, look at videos, read user experiences to nail down your preferred OS. Once you've done that, do the same for phones themselves.

5. Should I wait for the Nokia WP7 phones before I buy an android

A: OS choice is really a personal preference. It depends on what YOU looking for in your device. Between the two os's you bound to find one that suits your needs more.

Once you've decided on an os, THEN you look at what hardware you'd like to pair it with.

ICS has been announced, new devices are around the corner. I reall feeling a Nexus at launch. Nokia will release their WP7 phones (which are also almost ready). There are already great devices on the market but i'd hold out to see whats coming.

6. 3G or 4G?

A: Does it matter? We have neither down here. Even if any service rolls out within the next year, there's no telling which band it will operate on. lte? wImAX? hsdpa? Pick one. As long as the device is GSM.

See my thoughts in bold above.

Nokia World Next week, so we go see what they have to offer at that time.

Samsung Nexus Prime = Epic Device.

Samsung Galaxy Phone Sales Surpasses iPhone
« Reply #554 on: October 29, 2011, 12:38:34 AM »
The cult Android handsets from Korean electronics giant Samsung outsold Apple's iPhone last quarter. Financial results released by Samsung today reveal that the company's mobile division is now larger than Apple's by revenue. It's a major upset for a brand many saw as unassailable. The two companies are arch-rivals, with patent suits between the two underway in several countries. Samsung overtook Nokia earlier this year - and is now ahead of Apple, with 23.8 per cent of the market to Apple's 14.6 per cent. Nokia is in third. The South Korean company now earns 2.52 trillion won (£1.4 billion) from its mobile division - more than half its profits. Samsung's rise has been meteoric - driven by the company's expertise in cutting-edge chips. Samsung also makes the processor in Apple's iPhone 4S, according to supply chain specialist iSuppli. Nokia slumped to 16.8million. Apple blamed its recent disappointing figures on the leaks surrounding the launch of iPhone 4S, which meant iPhone users held off updating their handsets. The iPhone 4S went on to become the fastest-selling phone of all time, selling four million on its opening weekend. Samsung recently unveiled another phone in partnership with Google -the Galaxy Nexus, armed with hi-tech features such as a 'security lock' which 'opens' when the phone camera detects its owner's face. Samsung's Galaxy family of phones includes everything from tablets down to 'mid-sized' devices in between tablets and phones such as the upcoming Galaxy Note. Analysts Strategy Analytics, who released the report, said that Samsung was evidence that it was possible to 'differentiate' a company's mobile handsets on the Android operating system. Nokia announced a partnership with Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system this week - a move predicted to put the companies on track to capture 12 per cent of the European market next year.

Hey folks I frequently read pdfs on my Android devices, just wanted to share this useful reader that allows annotations while you read. Reading mode really does a good job of formatting documents for reading on smaller screens.

Awesome, any thoughts on the Droid RAZR?

Its pretty good, very well specced. Only thing I dont like abt Motorola is their customs skin, but that's just personal preference.

On the other hand, they promised that it will be one of the first phones released prior to Ice Cream Sandwhich (ICS) to be updated to it.

Trust me, current Android versions are damn good but ICS is something you're gonna want to get your hands on.
