There are select headsets that will work Arc. I tracked down a Nuforce headset, I have one and can confirm that the mic works for calls. Found out abt it through xda self.

Boy Arc, you eh start to see functionality and apps for that thing yet.

Just the other day I even found a bloody metal detector app that actually friggin detects metals when its near the phone.

I might actually end up buying one or two of these instead yes.  It has a built-in mic, and allows you to use any pair of headphones, and XDA confirmed that it works as well.  It seems that Nokia and Samsung are both in this non-standard foolishness when it comes to their headset ports.  I had this same issue on the N900.  In the meantime, I'll rock the Samsung set.

WDA @ 'metal detector'.  HAHAHAHAHA...that WIN!!! :awesome:

So far, IT IS FULL OF WINNN. Just two things off the bat, I now have FM radio where there was NONE before and there's an app that pretty much DOUBLES the brightness of my N1's camera flash when used as a torchlight!!!

Yea...good things DO get better.

Update: a chance visit to a cellphone store in Valpark hit paydirt.
They just happened to have the VERY Nokia headset I was looking for.

Problem solved.  Now I just need a wicked set of normal stereo earbuds.

Can anyone recommend what and where?

I think I've finally been able to tame the fierce battery usage of this Galaxy S.
Unfortunately, it means disabling all the really geeky bits, like haptic feedback,
some sounds, and some background updates/syncing.....you know, some of the stuff
that actually makes the phone 'smart'.  :(   These companies can come up with
killer phones, but yet still, battery tech hasn't caught up.  I guess that's why these exist.  :happy0203:

On a lighter note:  I was successfully able to upgrade my brother's Barne's & Noble Nook Colour e-reader
to Froyo, with help from this thread at XDA.  I'm beginning to love that forum more than porn.  :laughing7:

...and look at that...we just installed the 2.2 BETA, and as at 8pm tonight that very same thread
has been updated to v1 Gingerbread.  Simply astounding quantities of win for this OS.

^that battery problem is mostly software eh not your battery

idk why the @$$ Google not optimizing the software properly for use with "normal" batteries

by normal i mean smartphone normal.... 1300maH and higher

cuz with normal use on Windows the phone lasts 3 days that is with normal use

with android i have to charge the phone @ least once for the day....

twice or more under heavy usage mostly with WIFI....

seen many a post on batt life on xda for the last 2 years

Battery life is less than stellar on these Android devices...and im not disabling ANYTHING, in fact I am enabling extra features and i'll tell you why...

I have a charger at home, I can put it to charge while not moving around, I have a charger in the vehicle AND there's a charger at work so I can always keep the battery topped up.

As such, battery drain is never an issue for me.

On the other hand, my dad is always showing off to me that his omnia i900 lasts 4/5 days on standby with a slightly bigger cap battery.

Yeah, google needs to get off their ass and do something abt this battery life. Digging up in the modded roms you have options to throttle cpu speed and dramatically increase battery life, something that should be included in the default untouched google roms.

That said, I re-iterate. Modded roms make the (already awesome) default os experience look like a $100/night guesthouse next to the Hyatt.

Yeah...I have all them chargers too, but it would be nice to not have to always nervously wonder where the closest wall-socket is.  When I get that extended battery I will re-enable EVERY MUDDAS C@#T!!!  :laughing7:   I want my haptic feedback dammit.

a bit sad to hear about the battery woes. Sounds like the Ipaq all over again. Killer device that was held back by atrocious battery life.

They need to find a way to put dilithium crystals in smart phone batteries yes.

I get about 1 day with my blackberry bold though, so the other camp isn't exactly stellar.

Like captain, got charger at work, at home, in the car.

Can't wait for a leap in the technology to allow for a week of active use.

WM6.5 and prior users been dealing up with custom roms, hacks, tweaks, batt life tweaks etc for years. That's thing of d past, in 2011 if i spending 500+ on ah dam smartphone, give me one dat juss works out of d box, covers d basics really well, including batt life. Den top dat up wiht additional apps to expand d platform. I dont want to be cuaght on d phone all day on ah overseas call by ah client and realise my dam phoen about to dead. EPIC FLAIL! And d bulky extended battery thing, or carrying around ah spare, eh wokin dis rounds. (i too have all d chargers various locations, sometimes it juss not practical, and d need to actually having to RELY on it is retarded, those chargers shoudl be ah convenience not ah requirement.)

http://pocketnow.com/android/editorial-androids-flaw

I've done alot of research into android, and used it on a couple devices.
In d end d complete package juss not attracting me nah.
It have too much thing wrong with it.

And like previous poster said, nothing wrong with Battery tech, something wrong with Droid OS Optimization.

I do alot of web browsing so that would be important on my next phone, was wondering what sort of battery life these phones provide. The Windows 7 phones don't look like anything spectacular in that department according to this comparison anyway.

dont know bout that comparison, but i does spend plenty time on xda.
And men there who actualy own all d devices say, dey get 2 days out dey wp7 devices.

I does get ah little over ah day from my hd2.
When d samsung reach i go be able to tell fuh mehself what battlife is.
But acording to xda users who use d devices on ah daily basis, expect 2 days.
At least ah full day on heavy use.

Cool I'd like to know how real world performance goes. I wonder how much better the battery life is on the Samsung Focus compared to a Nexus One or I9000.

I did some digging, and found that there is a version available to 'try' for the SGS,
but it's one of those 'at your own risk' types of trial.  Not ready to deal with all the
known bugs listed for that release.  Froyo is working quite nicely as it is.

...but I will keep an eye out for an official Gingerbread ROM though.

Yes, trust me, if you like your phone now, you will want to make little phone babies with it after you install a Cyanogen rom.

Hmmm...custom installs a thing of the past eh? Man, I dont even know where to begin to say how wrong that is. Why should I just be able to do what the OS maker wants me to do on the device. The amount of fine detail and control over the device I now have is nothing short of incredible. I simply cannot imagine NOT using a custom rom to make a great thing even better.

Too much wrong with it? ummm fire some examples lets see what's wrong and i'll analyse.

Battery life is not great but not as bad as some will have you believe. I can easily get through a normal work day with my bluetooth headset connected, wifi on, calls as normal, email and calender checking, few minutes light browsing AND go to class in the night and use mobile hotspot (turn phone into wireless access point, something WP7 only WISH it could do period, much less natively) for 2 hours and still have enough charge for the drive home.

If I do tweaks like limit brightness, turn off BT and hepatic feedback it will last even longer. Not an issue whatsoever. 'Nice to have' would be a couple days of that kinna use with one charge but that is a sacrifice I am more than willing to make for what i get back in return.
