Android Tablets keep getting cheaper yes, impressed with what $250 can get you. I wonder what the performance will be like for those that just want something to browse web and read magazines/ebooks.

Archos Unveils 97 Carbon — an iPad-sized Android Tablet for $250

http://mashable.com/2012/07/05/archos-carbon/

Archos is taking on lower-priced Android tablets such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire with its newest tab: The Archos 97 Carbon.

Announced Thursday, the tablet is the first in a line of slates from the company’s entry-level Elements line. It runs Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

The 9.7-inch Carbon — the same size as the iPad — has a 1024 x 768 display, 1GHz ARM processor, and 1GB of RAM. The tablet offers both a forward and a rear-facing camera, 16GB of built-in memory (expandable via microSD up to 32GB) and has a “stylish premium aluminum” finish.

“We wanted to introduce a new series that not only combines affordability with a new slim design, but features the best that Google has to offer,” says Henri Crohas, Archos Founder and CEO. “With the Elements series we have done just that. It’s the perfect balance of hardware, software optimization and content through the Google Play ecosystem.”

The tablet comes pre-loaded with Office Suite Viewer –- for reading documents, but not editing them — as well as a demo version of the World of Goo. Much like the Nexus 7, but unlike the comparably priced Kindle Fire, the 97 Carbon has full-access to the Google Play store for downloading additional apps.

The 97 Carbon will be available later this month for $249.99. The company also plans to bring a 7-inch and 8-inch tablet into the Elements line in the future, which would presumably be priced even lower.

We haven’t gotten our hands on the Archos 97 Carbon yet, so we can’t speak to the build or performance quality. It is, however, one of the least expensive large-screen tablets we’ve seen hit the market.

We were impressed with the Nexus 7, which is $50 cheaper than the 97 Carbon, comes running the latest version of Android (Jelly Bean), and comes with a $25 credit for the Google Play Store, which undercuts the price even further.

I saw no real place for a tablet in my home personally (though the misses will firmly beg to differ with her beloved ipad)

but as the prices come down, the point becomes moot.

You can get a perfectly web capable second device to fling around the living room for US$200.00

Or better still, to run some Dora the Explorer to keep a child occupied.

Could be useful for those that need a mobile projector....

You've got to hand it to Samsung, it's not afraid to run with some unconventional ideas. Last year the company offered up the enormous Galaxy Note, a mobile that swerved dangerously into tablet territory, and this year we're treated to the Galaxy Beam -- a smart phone that contains a projector.

I love it.

Yet another device to converge into my "one ring"

The amount of electronics a single smart phone has replaced nowadays is just staggering.

What is the difference I did not seem that drastic a change in specs between v1 & v2.

Hey Wyatt did you receive the 4.1.1 OTA update yet.

Yeah they started yesterday, you may have to delete cache for Google Services Framework application then force update check.. I had to repeat about 4 times until I got the update.

JB is pretty buttery.

My Nexus has never shown an update available. All updates I've had to do manually. I thought it was because bMobile was not rolling out the update but if you guys are getting it ota then I'm confused.

EDIT: Ok Slamming I tried what you said and it is actually showing the update now. Thanks. Will download when I go home.

Mine did all the updates automatically thus far.

I did not see an update earlier (this morning) and the phone was still running 4.0.4

However, literally just second ago, saw a prompt for the update. So will see if its jellybean enabled in the next few minutes.

fingers and toes crossed

Honestly can't argue as the GN is google's flagship phone.

The great thing about android is you don't have to wait on the manufacturer to get updates, as there is so large a developer community which mostly produce Roms and features that rival what the manufactures create.

hahha, well that's a big difference.

Yeah, it's been at that price for a while. You can get it on Amazon for $429

Less hassle than dealing with the Google Store's disdain for international cards.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-I9250-Galaxy-Nexus-Unlocked/dp/B005ZEF01A/ref=sr_1_35?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1341282882&sr=1-35&keywords=galaxy+nexus

$379, if you don't mind ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-16GB-GT-I9250-UNLOCKED-FAST-SHIPPING-/380450891704?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item5894a3e7b8

ENded up taking the risk and buying the ebay item after research and reading a lot of  buyer feedback....phone arrived today with no issues at all. only thing is that its the YAKJUXW version, not the YAKJU version so updates don't come fast.

I'll need to do some flashing to get jellybean. Other than that it wins
