I suspect they will squeeze some more performance out of this with driver updates, prolly leaving some headroom for ATI to do optimizations as well. Not to mention those clocks are conservative, whereas DAAMIT went all out "#%$& thermals, performance is king" approach, which will prolly mean non-reference GTX590s at STOCK 580 clocks.

I'll ask my cousin why exactly they keep changing XD i'm sure she'll give a technical reason.

@ Awesome, should that read tell her to tell AMD to tell their AIB partners to GET THE $%^& in line or GET the $%^& out of our cards making business? just saying is all XD

Faulty drivers?  Possibly.  It happened before.

Ill never overvolt a gpu on air cooling, d cores mite be cool enough, but d vregs sure as hell doesnt be, and unless dem vregs water cooled, yuh coudl get screwed in such a manner.

That aside, i have had gpus go bad from faulty drives from both nvidia and ati in the past.
Nothing to that extent doh, lol. jus stop working.

Oh yea the bad drivers had me in a game session with allyuh and I suddenly realizing my 260 GTX have artifacts on the screen. When I do check the temp is 101 degs I sh!t U not.....still dunno how the card aint fail but it's been working fine since they sorted out that fan control issue.

Bad drivers can really kick your gpu/pc setup in the balls....

Yup @ bad drivers or at least cooling relying on drivers... lost a 4870 core in my X2 that way... CCC didn't load, stop fan speed insufficient... poof one core died..

I'll overvolt to experiment and bench and revert to stock and even then im talking millivolts worth of voltage increase.

If I have a $700 card, yuh damn right that eh getting no overvolt.

AMD challenges NVIDIA to prove that the GeForce GTX 590 is the fastest
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, March 28, 2011 - 8:30 PM N/A

Aaah, the ongoing mud-fight.  NVIDIA proclaimed its GeForce GTX 590 as world's fastest graphics card, even though reviews showed that the card can't clearly beat AMD's Radeon HD 6990. Therefore, AMD challenges NVIDIA to prove that the GeForce GTX 590 really is world's best-performing graphics card:

"At AMD we pride ourselves on both the excellence of our products, and in the integrity of our messaging. Let me give you a perfect example. Two weeks ago we launched our flagship GPU, the AMD Radeon™ HD 6990. We had designed it to be a game-changer and we hit the bull’s eye. The result: The AMD Radeon™ HD 6990 achieved the highest default single graphics card score of X3303 using the industry standard 3DMark11 benchmark. And when we launched it, we issued a press release in which we proudly called it the “World’s Fastest Graphics Card” and fully disclosed the basis upon which we made that claim.

Yesterday our competitor also issued a press release, announcing the launch of what they claim to be the “World’s Fastest Graphics Card”– the Nvidia GTX 590. We combed through their announcement to understand how it was that such a claim could be made and why there was no substantiation based on industry-standard benchmarks, similar to what AMD did with industry benchmark 3DMark 11, the latest DirectX® 11 benchmark from FutureMark.

So now I issue a challenge to our competitor: prove it, don’t just say it. Show us the substantiation. Because as it stands today, leading reviewers agree with us here, here, here, and here that the AMD Radeon HD 6990 sits on the top as the world’s fastest graphics card".

...yeah...nice benchie scores but look, I cant put one to work in a real world game like Crysis 2 or BC2 without getting horrible flickering or horrible performance. After all these years, drivers are STILL behind hardware in terms of stability and performance.

Consumer: WOW that's REALLY BIG, YES I WILL BUY YOUR PRODUCT (even though I buying the mid range)

Not everybody does buy high end for d E-Peen Effect eh lol.
I personally buying 6990 for one reason only.

To play my games @ Ultra Settings @ 2560*1600 res.
There are still some games, my gpu cant run at those settings, Crysis being one, @ 2560 crysis runs at all kinda 40-45 fps, unacceptable. at 1920*1200 on enthusit settings, 60fps+
But i want to game at 2560*1600. DOW 2 is another game.

When i run d dow benchmark, with everythign set to ultra, AA on, and 2560*1600 i get
Max: 180FPS
Average: 59
Min : 21

And during d benchmark / gameplay, when it have rel shit on screen with tons of explosions, i does see dat slowdown, and it dont look pretty. I want my games to run above 60fps reguardless of what going on on screen.

6990 seems to be d first card capable of doing that at Ultra/2560, for all my games.

Also future proofing me to be able to run Rage,Hunted, and Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim, at the same blistering settings.

If i disable AA on DOW, it runs much better, minimum does raise to like 45, but with dat AA on, it juss looks so sweet!

Visuals console men could only dream of :)

i dunno why men hating on the high end so doh.

cant call it a joke because 5% of enthusiast buy it. it is the urge to get the best performing card on the market is what enables consumers like us to make a killing in the midrange...

so what if it don't make sense for you to get one, be proud that others are, it's what's driving development.

Let me clarify:

It's a joke because those of us 'in the know' could really care less.  Most PC gamers
out there only want what's best for the money they're willing to spend, you know, that whole
'price vs performance thing'.

It's a joke because you have the driver issues with these dual-GPU cards which I encountered already,
and pulled out what little hair I had left to solve.  Why should I have to reinstall my OS for a new driver
when the previous version worked without issues?   Just an example, but it's a significant one.

It's a joke because in the grand scheme of things, no one buys a GPU based on which brand has the
'fastest card on the planet'....unless that is, you're buying that very card.

Not to mention the PSU, and case/ventilation issues.

So for AMD to get all 'hot and bothered' about such a fleeting title IS a bloody joke.

How that helping Crysis 2 run better on my dual-GPU rig? :laughing7:

Clearer now?

Saying it's a joke is not 'hating'.

I love the fact that people can buy the things for the very reasons you stated.

In fact, they could bring out a new one EVERY month, because it will drive down the prices of the cards that
the majority of us will actually buy.

yup i understood clearly what you were saying, your clarification just confirms it...

still dont see the "joke", guess we have a diff sense of "humor"

i also think you make claims to alot of things that are your personal opinion like "people in the know could care less" and "no one buys a GPU based on who has the fastest card", then review and tech sites wouldnt bother to fart on them when they drop the monsters, and AMD and NVIDIA wont bother to say "i have the fastest card" if it didnt make a difference to consumers... but hey i dont know

Personaly, who have d fastest card is exactly why i buy what i buy lol.

When i spend my 700$ i want to know i getin d BEST! out there.

Its why AMD get my money for d past 2 High end GPUs i buy, simply because, dey was Faster, at d price range. Dont give a rats ass bout brand to be honest. whoever giving me more performance for my 700$ dies what i buying.

I think AMD is aware of this, giving dem just cause to get hot and bothered with nvidia's claim of top performance lol.

Obviously "who in d know" will still do dey research and make sure, what d companies are claiming is true. But who not in d know, juss going to click buy, on d card dat d media say is d best.

It might seem like my personal opinion, but the fact that the segment that sells the most is the
the 150 - 250 US (mid-range) means that the majority of consumers feel the same way.
Doh pretend yuh aint know.  :)  You self fall in that category.  Of course, you have your reasons for that.

Fact: 700 US card buyers are a very  small segment, however, it is that very segment that
the review sites just looove to feature (after all, they need to verify the claims, ent),
and as enthusiasts, we like to read em, but I am pretty sure only the buyers in that
segment truly  care which one is 'fastest'.

So.. another reason NOT to buy a 590...
Quote
Nvidia is working on a Geforce GTX 590 cooling unit

A software driver fix was not enough
By Lawrence Latif
Mon May 16 2011, 12:42
CHIP DESIGNER Nvidia is readying a hardware fix to its top of the range Geforce GTX 590 graphics card amid widespread reports of the card 'burning' under high load.
Nvidia released its range topping dual GPU Geforce GTX 590 in late March and while initial reviews put the card on a par with AMD's Radeon HD 6990, reports started to emerge of users burning their cards. A few days after the launch Nvidia updated its drivers to stop users from overvolting the video cards, however a simple software fix might not have been enough if reports are to be believed.
VR-Zone reports that Nvidia will introduce a revised Geforce 590 GTX design with new inductors added to the card. The change will mean a new baseplate, the heatsink that makes contact with the GPU, meaning that existing aftermarket coolers will be incompatible with the revised card.
If indeed Nvidia does revise its GTX 590 design for a modified cooler, it will raise questions as to why this wasn't caught in the firm's validation testing. With reports that Nvidia is steadily losing market share in its quest to move into embedded graphics, a validation testing failure is likely to damage its reputation.
VR-Zone claims that the revised Geforce GTX 590 card will arrive in June and will carry a 502 marking on the circuit board.
The INQUIRER contacted Nvidia and a couple of its video card partners asking whether they are working on a revised Geforce GTX 590 design, but has received no comment by press time. µ
