@ notnice

I'll have to get one of those DVI to HDMI adapters/cables. I suspect it will deliver better quality than the VGA.

How much you paid for those P7800 7.1s?? Do you find the 7.1 worth it? Get much use of that? Or should I just stick with 5.1

Why a separate audio system for cable tv and Ps3?

1) YES
2) $900 I think,if it's worth it? For me yes.If it is the Z5500 you have /getting stick with the 5.1.
3)The 7.1 is hooked up on the pc all the time.(2.1 hooked up to the tv so any sound coming from the ps3 to the tv goes to the 2.1)

@ Berserk is that hdmi switch automatic? Or do you have to select the source?

How come you've got so many headset devices? the audio technica, the clear chat and the bluetooth for the ps3?

lol @ wii collecting dust. You ain't got the New SMB yet? The Wii sees plenty of action by us with that. Great 4 player game.

Never tried the PS3 as a media center. If that works great, it might just eliminate the laptop from the scene. How does it handle sub title files?

Have to select the source, well i have input 1 as PC and Input 3 as PS3, switch is connected to monitor, so all i have to do is press which input I want. Very handy device. only HDMI though.

I actually have more headsets, gave away and lent out others, but Im always looking for the best sounding audio experience. the ATH M50 is by far the most solid of the bunch. Just wish i could get that sort of quality on a headset.

there are applications for getting subs to work, but I haven't tried em yet, too much drama and pc could do it fine. but for regular wma and xvid files, well PS3 could show em pretty well. But I dont really use it like that anymore.

Two things I want to get in the immediate future for this setup are 1. an audio switcher, for the speakers, so both PS3 and PC could be connected to speakers without having to physically change the connection everytime. and 2. A WII VGA cable. might take a trek to Radio Shack this weekend to take a look.

get one of the creative x-fi cards that has an optical in

so it goes like this...
ps3 -> Sound Card -> speakers

you can add effects etc to your ps3 sound that way as well... works pretty good

and like men tight lipped about this hanns-g... steups nobody saying a price whether it local nothing sigh

interesting,

Thanks for all the replies.

Sounds like the Z5500 is really the way to go. I'm looking at integrating it into all the devices.

My only lingering concern is that manual toslink switcher.

Was hoping for an automatic solution, so the entire system is easy to use for the regular, non-techie folk in the house.

Did some calling around on the Z5500:

Radioshack: $4409.99 but they had it on sale for $2799.00 (3 months warranty)
CircuitZone: $3030.00
A padner at work with a link: $2100.00
Some Shady Guy on a local forum: $1800.00 (No Warranty)

Looking around online, it retails for US$2xx.00 refurbished and US$3xx.00 brand new.

Right now the Shady guy coming in within budget ($2000 or less) but I'm pretty sure it's going to be a refurbished system at that price. Unless they stole it off a truck. lol

Radioshack nearly killed me with their sticker shock. $900 for a DVI-HDMI cable and $450 for a DVI-HDMI adapter, a stinkin measly adapter. I know rent in movietowne expensive but Got Damn!

yeah, klipsch is the boss. Sold those to some customers aeons ago and was totally blown away by their performance. Talking about like a decade ago.

Those speakers have been out of production since 2003. Doubt I'd find one for sale now.

My sound source is going to be optical from the 360, PS3 and PC. Hoping that qualifies as good enough for the Z-5500

Arc, I'm with you 100%. Radioshack have to be on a particularly potent illicit drug. I'm gonna order all the adapters and cables online, with a few extras and still come away cheaper than buying one lousy adapter from them. Even after shipping/duty/vat/etc...

Doomtack, if by coax for the 360, you mean optical? I came across this on Amazon while looking for a way to connect it via toslink.

http://www.amazon.com/Premium-Digital-Optical-Microsoft-equipment/dp/B0030CGMAC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1275558240&sr=1-6

On a slightly different note, still considering speaker stands for the rear but wary of it being knocked down all the mc time and destroying the satellites. Thinkin about wall mounting but then the speakers will be permanently set in position. Sucks if we decide to move the TV. The stands gives the most flexibility but then you've got wires running all over the floor. Trip hazard and unsightly.

decisions, decisions.

@ hard o/c... i think that's wrong.. u can use spdif over optical etc as well, so toslink does use spdif
spdif is more of a protocol than anything else

oh and @ the stands:

my recommendation.. is if you have the wall near enough... mount it on the wall.. the only downside would be if u move the tv

1. Asus VH236 Monitor - 1 frame max input lag over HDMI
2. Xbox 360 (PS3 soon)
3. Hauppauge HD PVR - for recording videos from 360/PS3 up to 1080i

Ok Guys here is my Home Theater Setup

Power Conditioning = Monster PowerCenter IEP 2450 (With IR)

TV = Toshiba Regza 52RV535U 52" HDTV 1080p

BlueRay Player = Sony BDP-S350       Media Player = PopCorn C200          DVR = Dish Network VIP722

AV Processor / Pre Amp = Onkyo TX-NR807             Amp = Anthem MCA50

Remote = Logitech Harmony One

Speakers:

Fronts: Pair of Paradigm Studio 100 v.5             Center: Paradigm Studio CC-590 v.5

Surround R/L: Pair of Paradigm Studio ADP-590 v.5            Surround Back R/L: Pair of Paradigm Monitor ADP-190

Sub Woofer: Paradigm Studio SUB-12 with Paradigm Perfect Bass Kit

Connections

All the Media devices go into the receiver via HDMI, I pass video and audio teh HDMI cable to eliminate extra rca/optical audio cables.

From there the receiver sends video only via HDMI to the TV, feeds the MCA-50 from its pre/amp outs using Monster 400i UHP audio Cables for the Fronts, Center and surround right and left. The surround back left and right are powered using 2 of the internal amps on the AV processor. Subwoofer plugs into one of the sub pre/amp outs on the AV Processor.

The MCA-50 poweres the remaining cables (Connections From the front, center, surround R/L speakers to the MCA50 was done using 14Gauge quad conductor cables and some banana plugs I got from Amazon)

For wire management, I use regular wall mounted tracks to hide the speaker wires going to the Fronts, the Stand I have the TV mounted on got wire management so I hide the center channel speaker wires in there. For all the surround speakers I use this 14 gauge flat wire with wall mounted modules. (I stick the flat wire to the walls, pass some sheetrock mud over it, sand that down and paint it, yua never know it have wire run deh)

Flatwire Stuff                                                                         Banana plugs

I forgot to mention, to make sure all that shit up there actually sound the way it suppose to, I use an Galaxy CM-140 - SPL Meter to collaborate it all

lol @ 'won thread'.  Not sure how that post adds to the discussion though.  We trying to establish how best to hook up
our PCs and consoles to our sound systems WITHOUT winning a Lotto.  :laughing7:

That said, I think I found a rather simple solution to my own cable management issues...

Cables to go 3-Play HD Video/Audio selector.
It means that I also need a PS3 RGB cable, but small ting.  This way, I can use just one RGB input on
my LCD TV, and control all video/audio switching from the Selector.  Another plus from this, is that I can free up the lone HDMI port on said
TV for anything else.

...and if you have a little more coin to spare there's also this, and this.

Wyatt, I think the 3-way selector might just be your cup of tea, IF you willing to use RGB cables for all your consoles.

..and got-DAMN @ Awesome new TV!!!
