Whats your Home Theatre Setup?
« on: May 31, 2010, 08:43:13 AM »
Ladies (all 5 of you) and Gents,

What do you have in your home theatre?

What screen, speakers, receiver, dvd player, blu-ray player, htpc, consoles or whatever other gear you've put into your setup?

How its all connected and what else, if anything, you'd want to get to make it perfect?

Presently I've got the following

PS3 which also doubles as the Blu-Ray player (HDMI)

xbox 360 (component)

Wii (component)

Laptop for Windows Media Center with a remote control (VGA)

Flow Cable Box (composite)

Speakers X230 (Don't laugh)

Sharp 52" LCD

Short term plans to make it perfect.

Logitech Z5500 for surround sound and THX lovin' (optical)

HDMI cable for the XBOX 360

A pair of Tritton AX 720 Surround Sound Headsets for watching any movie starring Samuel L Jackson. (optical)

Notably missing is a receiver (well cept for the tiny one that comes with the AX 720s)

The TV seems to have enough inputs to handle everything sans a dedicated receiver.

Well,
My monitor is ASUS vw246h (1080p)

To it i have my;
PC (connected through DVI)
My PS3 (Connected through HDMI)
and my Nintendo Wii (Connected through VGA)

My sound system is a Logitech Z5500

with;
PC [using XFI ExtremeGamer sound card] (connected through Analog)
PS3 (connected using Optical toslink)

And my Wii uses an Altec Lansing 4.1 system.

They are all setup on the same desk, so i just press 2 buttons and switch between systems :)

I have a Linksys wireless router that supports my laptop and Wii, and  I use the wired LAN ports for the PC and PS3.
But the hottest thing in my setup is a small USB fan i have, pointed to my PS3 :P (will post pic later)

I also have my Bass Guitar and amp setup right here... just thought it would be worth a mention.

Logitech x530 speakers

Hans G 28 inch 1080 P monitor with hdmi switch connected to both PC and PS3 (both are connected through HDMI) (also have a 17 inch crt monitor being used for a dual display for the PC)

still have to get a switch for both to connect via audio for the speakers.

Also using Audio-Technica ATH M50 - headphones  for movies and single player gaming for both PC and ps3. l

and the logitech clear chat usb headset for chatting  (on pc) for pc gaming and a generic bluetooth headset for chatting on PS3.

Wii is currently collecting dust somewhere in a corner, also have PS3 synced with all the computers in the house so i could stream all my media on it. certain files cant play but the majority can.

Damn showoffs.

As they say, a pic says 1000 words.

Logitech Z2300, Turtle Beach Earforce, Skullcandy Titan (small circular black case)

28" Hanns-G and all the other trimmings you're accustomed to.

No consoles.

This is where the 'magic' happens...lol.

Xbox 360 connected to the AOC 27-inch LCD via RGB.  PS3 connected via HDMI.
Main rig connected to same LCD via VGA, and connected to Acer 22-inch via DVI.

Of course the TriTTon AX 720 is there doing triple duty, connected to PC, Xbox 360 AND PS3 via optical (and 3-way optical switcher).

What would really nail it for me though is one of those Logitech Z5300 or Z5500 speaker systems, to replace that aging X-530.

Also, the room itself could do with some AC.

i think that  TriTTon AX 720 and 3 way optical switcher is what i need for my rig. is there a wireless version for it btw? is the cord sufficiently long?

also thats an odd place to have the 27 inch tho. u move it usually right?

@ hard o/c

How did you hook up those rear speakers on the Z-5300?

@ Phoenix,

Same for you on the Z-5500. How did the wiring of the rear go?

@ Doomtack, I have the 26" version of that Asus on my PC, kicks ass! Good choice.

Hmm @ Wii through VGA, is it better? same 480p?

How do you have the rear speakers in the Z5500 hooked up? On stands or what? How did you run the cables? on the floor?

How come you didn't run the PC to the Z5500 using optical as well?

How come a separate audio system for the wii?

lol @ usb fan on ps3. drop the pic

@ Berserk is that hdmi switch automatic? Or do you have to select the source?

How come you've got so many headset devices? the audio technica, the clear chat and the bluetooth for the ps3?

lol @ wii collecting dust. You ain't got the New SMB yet? The Wii sees plenty of action by us with that. Great 4 player game.

Never tried the PS3 as a media center. If that works great, it might just eliminate the laptop from the scene. How does it handle sub title files?

@ Messiaah, wtf is pixy dust?

How did you get the optical out to buth the Headroom and the z5500? Some sort of splitter?

@ notnice

I'll have to get one of those DVI to HDMI adapters/cables. I suspect it will deliver better quality than the VGA.

How much you paid for those P7800 7.1s?? Do you find the 7.1 worth it? Get much use of that? Or should I just stick with 5.1

Why a separate audio system for cable tv and Ps3?

Arc,

That 3 way optical switcher is automatic or manual? Wanted to pipe everything through the TV but I'm reading online that it only supports stereo when you do that.
For example, you hook up your PS3 to the TV using HDMI, then connect the optical out from the TV to the Z5500. Even though the PS3 supports surround sound, the TV will only deliver stereo sound to the Z5500.
As a result, thinking I'll have to try one of those optical switchers to send all the audio straight to the Z5500 and preserve the 5.1 goodness.

What about those rear speakers? Are they on a stand, ear height?. Seeing some cables on the ground, assume its for those?

and yeah...as berzerk said...that screen on top looks like an instant neck brace. lol. What is its purpose? Movietowne?

Seems real men have the Z5500. That's an endorsement in of itself.

Where's the best place to get one locally?

They are cheap and has been working excellently for me for a couple years now. Image quality is one of the best ive seen on any monitor, any size.

Thing is though they are a bit hit and miss in terms of getting a working one. Some people report that they get doa's but once u get a working one, smooth sailing.

For the price though, there is absolutely NOTHING out there that can compare.

The 3-way optical switcher is as manual as you can get...its one of these...

Your 3 sound sources go in this end, and the other end goes to your speakers/headset.  You manually turn the selector to whichever
sound source you want to output, so its only one at a time.  There's a red marker to tell you which one you've selected.  Crude, but effective.

The rear speakers I have are just on the floor against the wall behind me, spaced for maximum uberness...lol.

As for the 27-inch...its at the perfect place for console gaming.  I can just push my chair back, lean back, and relax.
Its too big to fit anywhere else in any case.

The VGA cable just gives 480i, its supposed to be about the same quality as component in. I only opted for it so i can use it on my monitor. It works great though.

As for rear speakers my room is carpeted so i run the cables along the edge of the floor under the carpet, and they are screwed onto my wall in the rear. The cables are more than long enough for my relatively small room.
I used to have a separate analog setup, so my PC used to use both the Z5500 and the altec, i used to use both systems at the same time to pic up the lacking in the mid range of the Z5500, but i don't care for it much these days, and i decided to leave the Z5500 analog, so that i don't have to use a splitter for my PS3. The sound quality is excellent already since i use a XFI card.
It makes life easier to switch from PC to PS3 with just the touch of a button.

The Wii comes with RCA audio, and i have said altec system already setup in the room on the desk, so i just utilize it one time.
In fact it rel nice since, the Z55, my PC and PS3 are black.
And the Wii and my altec system is white :P
