Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

AHAHAHAHA....OMFG!!!

I predicted this somewhere in the deep, dark depths of the MW2 thread.

Now that it has actually come to pass...all I can do is laugh uncontrollably.

FEES shawty...FEES!!!  LMAOOOOOO  :laughing6:

I guess if the same Activision (Blizzard) can charge a monthly fee
for men to cast a 2+ magic and do it real big, they could get FPS men
to pay a little 10 US a month to camp and call in airstrike every 5 seconds.

So...on TOP of paying for the game, and paying 60 US a year (XBL),
because lets face it...Xbox always does the best numbers, they actually
asking people to pay a NEXT fee again.

Wow...Activision's greed is ASTOUNDING!!!

What an absolute and utter joke.

Well so far on twitter some of the devs stated that COD Elite will be free and that multiplayer will remain free. This paid subscription will be for premium bonuses.
Waiting for the full details before I get hostile with activision :P

...and will people with these 'premium bonuses' be allowed to play
against those who don't have em?

Will the 'hardcore' players be able to gang-bang all the n00bs repeatedly
because they were willing to pay for the 1337 $#00t3r g3arz0rs?  :laughing7:

Will the 'community' now be finally segmented into the payers, and non-payers?

Not that I'm really inclined to care, but somebody's gotta ask, right?

You're paying for data, lots and lots of it. Metrics that were always there on the server logs, just put into graphical form. Honestly it's a brilliant idea from a business perspective. Give ppl more access to better data to hon their skills. Alot of professional gamers and clans will appreciate the info. So its definitely not for everyone. What Blactivision (imho) has done is, found a way to make money out of something that was ALWAYS there, but underutilized. Can't fault them for that. Adding the DLC content seems like a no-brainer if you want ppl to feel like they're ACTUALLY paying for something. And lastly the social aspect where clans, tournaments, leagues, etc are organized are also a right fit.

Imho, whilst its an interesting concept and can help the really competitive folk, it's really nothing except tha expense the vast majority of us. One major hiccup to all of this is what I will refer to as the 'HOST FACTOR'. Without dedicated servers, all this info will mean SQUAT. You can be the best of the best, that split second difference in host will make the difference between you're BESSS team losing against a NOT AS BESS team. So for us outside the US, this is going to be that much less effective.

Lastly, we need to see the subscription. If it turns out to be even 5USD a month, consider that's 60USD a year! if you buy only the DLC maps which are AT BEST 3 a year, that's still 15USD MORE. So I think it'll be a hard sell, interesting yes, helpful potentially, a service I would patronize, NEVER.

So.....basically, it's Facebook for Call Of Duty?  :confused3:

I get what they're trying to do here, but is it really worth paying a monthly
subscription fee?

There were sites that offered extensive stat-tracking for Bad Company 2, for free.
I guess what's on offer here would have to MIGHTY compelling to get gamers to pay.

We shall see.

from what i read its not just facebook for call of duty
u get actual clan support......cuz we know cod games lack any sort of real clan support
u get to enter tournaments and leagues for REAL prizes

tbh for me its a "meh" feature. I wanna see what parts of the service actually free and what parts u have to pay for tbh.

clan support and tournaments? Most PS3 exclusives have in game clan support with tournaments and matches. Sure no real prizes but i seriously doubt that say i win they will ship any prize to trinidad so probably like always US & EU eligible only.
