Do you mod your system?
« on: February 08, 2010, 03:54:10 PM »
The title speaks for itself...do you? and if you do, why?

Certainly price of games plays a role, as everyone wants to play the best titles, but not pay the high price. But is mod-ing your system and playing burnt copies of games cripling the industry and game developers lose more and more money?

I particularly have a problem with bootleg games, because I appreciate the work and time developers put into the games and I want to encourage them to keeping making them. By buying and playing bootleg games, gamers cripple the industry and dissuade potential developers from making titles. The industry is headed to a stage where games will be purchased online and then downloaded to the buyers own console, making bootlegging a thing of the past. We'll see what happens

I don't have a problem with buying a game, i have a problem with buying a crappy game, or a buggy game that company's refuse to support. Or on the PC, rediculous DRM schemes. I have a simple philosophy. If i play a burnt game all the way through, buy it (well new philosophy anyway). If not, then it was just an extended demo.

And I do believe piracy is crippling the gaming industry. At the same time the extent that publishers are going to just to prevent their games from being pirated, are also foiling legitimate customers as well. Like Ubi's new scheme to stay online to play a single player game...what a load of rubbish. Any game like that i would never buy!!! But when cracked, played through or not, i will still never buy.

The gaming industry and copy protection doesn't need to change. People and there mentalities towards this "burn game thing" does. But think about it. If a legit game was the price of a burnt game, I don't think we will be having this discussion. For me, a legit title is just Too Expensive. So if you can enjoy a cheaper alternative, why not? And that is a prime example of the mentality and culture of today's consumer

nah. no mod for me..

legit games are a bit expensive, yes.. but if you hang on a bit ( a few months after the launch) you can save some money ( well, if you bringin the games in.. retailers here still sell at high prices regardless)

with regards to using burnt games as a demo... nah..lots of  games have legit demos..  case in point. was gonna drop some change on civilization 4.. til i played the demo and realised it wasnt as much fun as a hoped.. no longer a priority purchase

tha's like if i go to work for a new company .... they don't like how i perform, so they send me home without pay after a 1 month... sure, they didnt like me and have every right to send me home.... but i worked for them, and finished the task they assigned for me.. gimme muh damn money for the month..   if they said they wanted to evaluate me first with an unpaid 1 week internship, well cool... let's see how it works out

full job = full game
unpaid internship = demo

also, there are reviews/forums to point out tech glitches.. esp if you hold your hand a bit.. e.g.  last remnant.. wanted to play that game when it came out. but read that the xbox360 version is a plagued with long loading times.. so now..I could either purchase used for $13 USD or new for $20.. sure, it still a bit more than a burn but not by much..

even 'used' has a stigma attached.. but someone on this forum had pointed out to me for the most part, when gamers sell their games.. they use the money to purchase more games ( mostly), thereby keeping it in the gaming economy ( i hope.. it could otherwise be fuelling a crystal meth addiction)

at the end of the day. gaming is a privilege, not a right.. companies are out there to make money... less money for them = less games for us..

intellectual property ( like games, music, and video) hard to police.. cuz is so easy to make a digital copy that you will enjoy just as much as the 'real thing'

and UltimateGamer is right in sayin these piracy measures do little more than frustrate the owners of the legitimate stuff.. if you know where to look, you'll always be able to get a copy of said item..  but you would be surprised with the number of people ( young and old) who not too savvy when it comes to piracy.. i think the measures are there to prevent them ( the unwashed masses) from simply copying a disk and giving it to a friend

and thanks to steam, you can get legit pc games very cheap.

With all the convenience of downloading online straight to your pc. Fully patched and always updated.

Never having to worry about a virus infected nocd crack or trojan laced patch.

best of both worlds.

^^ i forgot about steam, as it's PC centred
but with the consoles you can also purchase some full games these days... i think within a couple years time, you gonna get new games releasin for purchase nearer to or even same time as physical media.. ( although i would like to see a discount.. no way i payin a full 50 and doh have sumthin solid.. a 40 for a new game.. and 20 for one more than 9 months old..)

i jsut hope they dont keep up this region blockin nonsense....

Since i don't use steam, here's a stupid question, any way you can resell these games purchased on steam?

nah you cant.. with any downloadable content..
the used games market will disappear once digital distribution takes hold.. but that will be far from now, i hope
.

funnily enough, just bounced this up on reddit ( more or less talkin about DRM, software piracy etc)

funny about mention of drm. the most drm infested game in my collection on steam is batman Arkham Asylum, and it gave zero issues. never had an issue with any game from steam to be honest.

as for mods, im keeping the wii legit. when i had a psp i had it modified, but sold it after awhile. got tired of the small screen.

The amount of hardware issues man getting with legit systems...why would I want to now multiply them issues by introducing a mod?

Eh eh...sorry.  Consoles staying as is.
