Keep in mind that a lot of those 'deals' you seeing locally (quite a few in the papers) are for 720p TVs eh...not 1080p.

A lot of people running them down without really understanding what they're paying for.

Just as a follow up on this Arc.

Here are today's prices for screens @ PriceSmart.

32" Toshiba 720p: $4299.00
37" Viore 1080p: $4999.00
40" Sony Bravia 1080P: $8399.00
52" Sony Bravia 1080p: $14,999.00
55" Toshiba Regza 1080p: $16,999.00

Any better deals? Might be in the market for one in a couple months (birthday) and wanna go local.

Hmmm...based on what it would cost to ship/clear the 37 and the 40 inchers...those prices are rather good,
and at least you get some kind of warranty from PriceSmart, as opposed to an online purchase.

I say if you can afford it, buy it from PriceSmart and done.

yeah arc, that's what I'm thinking too. I know CircuitZone has some sets as well. Will try to rounds up the prices to compare. Anyone else seeing deals on these around the place?

Awesome, won't the Viore have the 1080p res for your PC once you go through its HDMI port? (DVI to HDMI adapters, etc...)

Not necessarily.

The panel itself must be able to support the resolution.

1080p video res does not necessarily mean 1080p computer resolution.

Because pc resolution and video resolution are two very different beasts.

Trust me, the tv will know the difference between a pc signal and a non pc signal.

I'm thoroughly confused.

I thought the only time the screen differentiated between the two was when you used the analog VGA cable?

Once coming through HDMI, it shouldn't matter.

Not usually one to doubt a tech master like yourself but you certain of what you saying capitan?

Did some digging on that monitor and apparently its a 1920x1200 native res, but only 1440x900 HDTV

Really 16:10 masquerading as a 16:9 1080p. Not bad if you want a big monitor but less than ideal if watching HD movies is your gig as the image will be slightly distorted.

Interesting. Ive come across some units that boast 1080p but their pc resolution is 13x7.

Could be a mistake in their spec listing I guess.

Interesting. Ive come across some units that boast 1080p but their pc resolution is 13x7.

Could be a mistake in their spec listing I guess.

It means they can accept a 1080p signal. They will then scale to its max resolution. This is why you must be educated about the tv or monitor u are purchasing because while it can accept a 1080p signal it will not show TRUE 1080p unless it can show 1920x1080.

So then it is possible to have a 1080p that has a resolution lower than 1920x1080 then. The TV then downscales the 1080p input to something the panel can handle.

In that case, its important to make sure that while its 1080p, the resolution is 1920x1080.

Did I get that right?

I think that's bordering on false advertising.

If a set says its 1080p the bloody thing should be native 1080p. Not "accept" 1080p signal and then down scale to a native 320x240 res. lol

At least this explains why some screens look different in quality in the shop when they both boast 1080p.
