Yeah I saw prices shortly after... Sadly i find the price a little hot... Seeing as you 'could' technically get a low end laptop with more processing power at the same price... Dammit...

O Right, i been using RTM for a while, didnt realise you was talking bout purchasing, i cant remmber when last i actually bought an OS i just get mines through msdn.

And Wintry, those prices mirror d ipad exactly, they still sell in droves, there are uses for tablets still (portabilty, battery life, touchscreen, couch use, always on, etc etc etc). If those uses dont apply to you, then you shouldn't be looking at RT to begin with, but Pro.

But at d end of d day you get what you pay for, a similarly priced laptop wont be able to do this:

As nice as they are...at them prices (yikes!)...M$ will be keeping those.  :/

Think I'll hold onto my Asus a bit longer.  I already have Windows 8 Pro on that.

I have a sony vaio SA, with windows 8 pro on it, i pay $1750 for it sans accessories

If i get a surface pro for 1000~1200$, with touchscreen, touch cover, better battery life, alot more portable, rugged, sexy, and similar specs to my Sony, I taking it in ah heartbeat.

Also keep in mind, these are Launch day prices eh. I pay 1750$ for my sony at launch, 6 months later, they drop d thing to like 1100, rel vexing. And i sure these go eventually drop too.
Especially when ver 2 rumors start leaking.

That's why i don't own an iPad either. I'm not paying for a glorified Web browser/portable media device (my phone already can do those things). For me a tablet is a nice to have not a necessity. The things i do require a full blown laptop, not a tablet, hence the rt was my first potential tablet... But not at those prices,
May well wait till it Drops I'm price like you said... Might go nexus in the interim

Wntry if u need a full blown laptop (like me), rt wouldn't work for u at any price point, because it can't run all win7 apps, Surface pro is for that, rt is metro apps only with the exception of office.

Surface pro have ultranook specs and that's d only option for men like u and me. Which is why I never own an iPad too. Surface Pro ftw.

That's probably going to be the case, but a new laptop is not on the cards atm, so i guess it'll have to wait for later... Cheap tablet ftw i guess here I come

In a term... 'screen size'. My phone is 4.3 which is perfect for a phone imho, but for just lying around the apt and viewing vids, websites (can be tricky on some sites with my phone b/c of the need to run the mobile browser in full desktop mode, everything gets small and zoom with the way some sites are coded doesn't work out well).

Like I said, a tablet atm is a nice to have, it'll be a convenience for me now (not necessity) so an affordable media device is what I want. Even with an ultrabook or W8 Pro tablet, it will doubtfully replace my Core i7 (quad core-oct logical) 8GB ram, 1Gb vid card, 500Gb hd, etc... which I do NEED for my job at present.

Ok, i understand d need for tab, which is why i want one, it just never justify having both a tab and laptop for me. But surface combining d 2, so i coudl get meh couch convenience, and meh productivity.

I runing i7/8GB, 74GB+500GB right now also. But the Surfacepro coming with an i5, so that should be enough i think. Only 4gb of ram doh, so that go be a compromise for me, but more and more i doing stuff on remote servers, so d need for a truly powerful laptop getting less. So my plan is, just have an always on Lab on my pc, that i could remote into for powerful stuff. And i5/4GB on the Surface pro should be enough for my admin tools, browsing, etc. I mite have the need to run 1 vmware workstation pc doh, so i hope d 4gb coudl get away with it. But with SSD and the 64gb SDHX card i going to put in it, i shud be able to be fine with d 4gb. and end up wiht 128+64 for storage, which should be fine, i have a 1TB usb laptop drive for anything needed in a crunch.

W1ntry also keep in mind, surface pro is not yuh only option eh.
There is also th Asus Taichi, which is what i was going to buy before i found out bout the surface.
Taichi is as powerful as what both you and i have (maybe more), with all d touch screen and convience of the tablet built in. And i held some Asus Zenbooks and boy o boy are those things sleek and sexy.

So the taichi is an excellent choice for men who want more power. But MS just come rel innovate with the surface so i need to own one.

Tested Windows 8 RC on a laptop for a bit and really wasn't impressed. My main issue was related to resolution support, specifically for my big screen LCD in the living room.

For some reason, Windows 8 offered a maximum of 1024x768.

Aside from that, the metro interface was jarring and felt like I time traveled back to the Ipaq era running Windows CE. It has those very flat squares going on. Almost Windows 3.11 in appearance.

Everything feels so 2dimensional. So minimalist.

Fortunately, it also brought back the speed of the 3.11 days. This OS moves....like a rocket.

Earlier today, I came across a link on the Microsoft site to purchase Windows 8 Pro for US$39.99

Thought there was some catch. At that price....I wouldn't mind giving the final product another spin (not on my main machine though)

An hour later, I upgraded a secondary rig to the flagship OS without incident. This time, a desktop machine. Basic specs. 4GB RAM, Dual Core processor, ATI 4850 card. Windows 8 did not disappoint. It is blisteringly fast.

For US$40.00. Definitely worth the upgrade if speed and efficiency is your thing.

Pleased to report that there were no region blocking shenanigans either. Able to purchase and download using my VTM.

Supported 1920x1080 on the LCD connected to the machine (though some other resolutions I normally use are missing) Did see a few quirky things when running full screen games and changing resolutions but will keep my eye on that and report back as time progresses. Could have just been a glitch in the matrix.

So far so good.

+1 MS for the give away price on a premium OS.

Cheaper than some games I've purchased on steam.

installed full version on laptop. Considering slapping it on main. Have no real complaints really, based on my experience on laptop. So today self i might take the big step on my desktop. Still weighing it out.

Oh, it's a great 'main-rig' upgrade if you happen to own a Xbox AND a Windows Phone...or if you're one of those taken in by the whole 'smart-glass' dog and pony show.

Can't see any other valid reason at this point.

The rest of us will be happily plugging away with Windows 7 until M$ gives us a more compelling reason to 'upgrade'.  *stifles laughter*

well got the 360 and the windows phone dey. and zero issues thus far. so no real reason not to.

tested smartglass, but honestly not a fan. if the tech allowed you to control pc rather than the 360 id be more interested. Besides there are similar apps to control xbmc via phone, so smartglass is nothing really new or unique.

on the other end I have no real reason to install on my main, Windows 7 is perfect for my uses, so like I said, still weighing options. Always love to experiment with new tech/software, so I might just do a dual boot or something.

ponders...

I'm the opposite, I'm using smart glass on my Android phone and I think its fantastic! The extra info, the ability to control messaging easily instead of through the dashboard controlling the xbox is better and you rightfully said you can use a million other apps to control the PC, I think its a step in the right direction as far as glass goes
