I fear that edge will be lost with the next generation of consoles (new Xbox to be announced in 2013)

Desktop PCs are the last of the Mohicans.

Think so? We hear this with the launch of each new console generation. Consoles Achilles heel is the fact that they aren't upgradeable allowing pcs to advance much faster. One could make an argument that services like on live could shift this but that's probably not going to happen for a good few years.

Well I just played Halo 4 on my aging Xbox 360 and the graphics weren't a disappointment.

You could image what Halo 5 would be like on the new Xbox? Which is rumoured to have a 7000 series AMD GPU?

At that stage, spending US$800+ for a gaming desktop won't be an attractive value proposition for the majority of gamers.

We would have reached the point of diminishing returns.

Its the end of days for the PC industry I tell ya.

If Intel is worried, that should be proof positive.

Just came across these articles...they align well.

http://www.electronicsweekly.com/Articles/19/10/2012/54815/intel-and-amd-see-end-of-desktop-pc.htm

Interesting that Intel is seeing lower numbers this year....but at least they are still making ludicrous money. AMD on the other hand, is already posting losses.

No one can deny how mobile focused Windows 8 is with Metro.

The writing is on the wall (or web)

Lord have mercy, not this pc gaming is dead crap again.
The interenet have a funny habbit of grasping for straws.

Nokia hire 1 linux engineer (to help with Nokia Maps on Android) all of ah sudden, all over d net you seeing "Nokia may be making an android phone" article. It went so far as to make other editors cuss d idiots that making said claim based on 1 job posting.

This pc gaming / post pc era seem to be d latest thing for d past few years, and d same thing was said when vista release, same thing was said when windows 7 release. The last pc OS to release sold 6...hundread....MILLION copies. Record breaking.

And windows 8 selling 3 times as fast as windows 7 when it was released. Obviously sales will dip, during d transition. But if an OS that sold 3 times slower, made it's way up to 600mil, dont you guys think it's a bit early to drag back out d old pc sales going down, last of the mohican propagander? Intel and Nvidia were so sucessfull and made so much money off desktops it put amd out of business....(And intel is currently nonexistant in the mobile space, they still trying to break in there to compete with Qualcomm).

Ontop of that, PC gaming has seen some of the best sales it's seen in years, with games like SC2, Dialo 3, hitting d scene, and with PC versions of other games being drastically superior visually than on other platforms. AC3, Skyrim, Far Cry 3, etc, etc etc.

Also, tablet sales for windows 8 wont be strong yet, because there arent any Windows 8 Pro device to buy yet, and as i point out early, said devices are what most ppl waiting on. The Dell XPs 12, the Taichi, and Surface Pro. Those are the money makers, and when they are all readily available then you go see how tablet sales go.

So in closing, last time they pc gone through business was broguth up, PC coudlnt have done any better over the last 2 years. A small momentary drop in sales means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Windows 8 going to sell just as much, if not outsell windows 7, wait and see....

Edit:

I fear that edge will be lost with the next generation of consoles (new Xbox to be announced in 2013)

THIS! ^^^,

LOL gorsh boy wyat, every year boy? every console release boy? PPL has been clamming the death fo the pc for years on end, yet still each year pc games keep getting better and better, i just dont see d logic lololol. And every console game i see in recent times graphics were disappointing to me, including halo 4.... As Woodyear inferred, the 720 go appear to be matching or better than pc graphics on launch, but as heavily discussed in the "pc gaming is dead" thread, and as phoenix pointed out in that thread as well. This is always the case, a new console launch, ppl say no need for pc again, consoles matching graphics or better, and then in a short 2 years, PCs surpass console graphics, and then consoles end up with shit graphics for another 6 years, whiles PCs keep creeping up with more and more graphics. You woudlnt belive how skyrim looks on my pc, after i lash it with some mods, UNREAL, and berzerk send me a 1080p far cry 3 PC Max Settings vid last night, my word, graphics to kill.

i think wyatt seeing a lil to far... its more like this... PC has definitely passed its hay day.. to much options now... not everyone needs a pc anymore... not everyone needs a pc to game anymore

so will sales decline... yes...
will pc manufacturers need to start diversifying or innovating more.. most definitely

will the pc die anytime in the forseable future... dont think so...

Phoenix said it best.....the PC has passed its hay day. End of an era.

That is what I mean, precisely.

Of course, the PC is not going to completely die. Come on.....there are people with working PS2s, Ataris, Super Nintendos....hell.....I'm sure someone still has a dreamcast going strong.

But they have all past their prime. They no longer dominate the landscape and are heading for obsolescence.

That is the state of affairs for the PC I'm afraid.

Microsoft and Intel are writing on the wall too. That's the two PC powerhouses right there. GG no re

You really comparing 2012 pcs with 20 year old gaming consoles ? :-S

Because you mite be running geriatric hardware don't mean everybody else is eh.
PCs will go strong for years to come, and will remain more advanced than any mobile tablet or console whiles doing so.

D way you talking yuh sware pc makers stop making desktops and just making tablets lol.

The gtx 680 is some of the best innovation and advancement on desktop graphics technology I've seen in a long while, reminiscent of the 'hey' days. Because mobile and tablet tech developing it don't mean PC innovation becoming obsolete. And right now alot of R&D being placed on brining touch experience to the desktop. Minority Report in we ass. PC have ah long ways to go yet, alot of innovation in d pipeline, doh worry.

Not based on what we're seeing from Microsoft and Intel.

To summarize....they see NO growth in the PC space.

None, zilch, nada.

Equilibrium is a difficult thing to maintain.....if the PC industry isn't growing.....you guessed it, it's dying.

The death throes may last years, decades even.....but the glory days are behind us.

The future belongs to mobile.

If Microsoft and Intel didn't join the bandwagon....I'd sing a different tune....but they did.

Read the links I posted to get a feel for the situation.

http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?ID=201210040025&Type=aECO

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/dell_inc/index.html

Quote
Purchases of PCs in the United States, the most mature and wealthy market for the machines, was 15.9 million units. In the second quarter of 2011, the United States market had 16.9 million PC shipments. Gartner said most of the drop from a year ago was because of poor consumer demand, along with lower demand from government and educational institutions. Not only are consumers attracted to other options, like tablets, Gartner said, but vendors are starting to stock more alternative products and services. That loss of retail shelf space could make life even more difficult for PC makers.

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/11/some-ultra-disappointments-for-computer-makers/?ref=dellinc

Just goes to show that Windows 8 is a step in the right direction. Mobile devices look like the smart bet for the next five years.

I read every link you posted, but they are not the only ones on the internet, there are tons more articles that argue in favor of PCs, But you does come across like PCs dead right now. You said earlier that the PCs in yuh house now is d last of the mohicans, really? :S

Its just blowing steam. There was a point in time apple was almost bankrupt. And 1 man, 'steve jobs' released the iphone, and now they're they richest company in the world. Microsoft Nor Intel is anywhere NEAR that deminished level, but some how the "writing is on the wall?" Geeze.

Last year you said the same thing, yet still this year we got better PC hardware, better PC games, and a better PC experience all together than previosu years. Hell men building PCs just to run they home theater, PCs even getting uses that they didint have back in the day.
I really dont know why for a man who suppose to be supporting PCs, u always promoting the 'inevitable' death of PCs.

I read articles that say, windows 8 is selling 3 times as fast as windows 7 did when it was launched. I read articles where the CEO of Dell says, microsoft made a major change in there OS and it will take a bit longer to take hold than ppl expect.

Quite frankly it's way to early to say "PC Dead, it inevetable.' So microsfot and intel go just watch they bread and butter get flush, Nvidia go just give up the ghost, and hope tegra pays off. Dude. There are alot of smart ppl in the industry that knows what going on, and takes the necessary steps to maintain a healthy technological economy.

And thats exactly what Microsoft, Intel, and Nvidia are doing. Remember we talked about the price of windows 8 already.?

When microsoft stops making millions on desktop operating systems, when dell decides to stop making pcs and make only arm based tablets, when hp, asus, acer, toshiba follow suite, when Intel abadon all logic and stop making they i3,5,7 serires of CPUS (or whatever they name in the future), and start making only ....(i dont even know d name of intel arm based chip, they even have one? lol), when all these things actually happen. THEN i could say, the writing on the wall.

But mobile technology florishing, or PC growth for the moment not increasing, in no way means, PC Dead, or dying, or wont be around in a decade, or 2, or 3.

I sure ppl thought apple was dead a few years back too, now look at them.
Technology is too unpredictable to make the claims u making. And too many companies, and too much of the world's technology infrastructure relies on PCs, it not going to just ups and vanish in a few years, or decades, just becuase google make a killing with android.

You should go do some more research. Research the surface table now called pixel sense. Research the holographic UI MS is working on. Research what ppl like synapsys is doing. Go checkout the project where a small box is placed by your monitor allowing "minority report like" control of your pc (i forget what that one name), And i can go on and on. Do real proper research of what d industry is working on, and the kind of technology that's being developed, and then come and tell me 'the writing is on the wall'. The world go just give up all this power because of mobile innovation? *Yawn*

We been through this argument thoroughly in the "pc gaming is dead" thread yuh come back with this again boy, wayz.

1 man (Steve Jobs) had a bright idea and it changed the world of tech, yuh sware everybody else dotish.

I'd love to see the links to back up your claims.

Cause the ones I've read (and posted) painting a very different story

I was the first to say that intel killing off the enthusiast market was crazy but after seeing these articles over the last few days, doubts started to set in.

Would be happy to be proven wrong.

I think there is a difference between the death of the Personal Computer, and the death of PC gaming.

PC gaming isn't going anywhere, the sheer amount of multiplatform titles that are getting Triple A treatment on the PC, the amount of Free to Play titles that are PC only, and the indie offerings (which have grown significantly this year) not giving any impression about PC'gaming' dying.

What may be changing, is the desktop PC as we know it.

I think its the opposite of what Wyatt said. There may be a focus on making PC gaming accessible to all, making a focus on entry level specifications for PC's like this for e.g -  http://www.digitaltrends.com/desktop-computer-reviews/alienware-x51-review/ (hence the intel rumors etc) and the possible consolisation of the PC (that even a word?) I mean just look at windows 8 store, all those mobile offerings are still on your PC and could also be played on your mobile.

If anything it could be the console that is in trouble. But yes the strength is now in the mobile, and unfortunately the casual market.

And as for links

http://hothardware.com/News/Microsoft-Declares-Its-Time-To-Focus-On-PC-Gaming/ (old article but still relevant)

http://www.t3.com/news/pc-gaming-is-fastest-growing-platform-says-ea-ceo

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/28/breaking-down-the-barriers-of-pc-gaming

the only game of note that didn't come to the PC this year was Halo 4. And that was pretty much to squeeze the last bit of value out of the xbox 360, before the new one comes out (possibly late 2013)

Boy is months of research and technology news i have to be filtering through to find links for this man. Is long time ongoing research being done to enhance the PC. Man not keeping up to date with tech and what's going on, read 1 or 2 negative articles, and ready to spew steam bout pc dead agian. I compiling ah list, i mustbe up to 10 articles already.

Edit:

Here wyatt, lord, next time try to stay abressed with what's happenign in the industry, and what's being planned for in the future, before you just post 1 or 2 negative articles and start spewing the death of the PC.

As berzerk pointed out, the PC as we know it is chanigng, it by no means means it's Dead. Also , as you'll see in some of the links i post, what we know as a pc mite be completely different in the future, but the power of a pc is going to be required to pull off some of them stuff. And thats where PC's headed to next.

Yuh mite walk in a man house, and cant even find d pc, shit go be built into d wall for all we know lol. Point is, PC's are not dead, and not going anywhere, it have tons of innovation left. And it will progress at a steady pace until we arrive at full fledged startrek holodecks. At which time men like me go still be buying custom hardware to mod they holodeck to be more uber.

Dazwhawetalkinbout

Lol @ johnny

But berserk touched on another key distinction. I am particularly talking about the full desktop computer.

As mobile devices become the platform of choice the desktop pc that sit in our bedrooms will go the way of the dodo.

If the next iteration of surface could run data 2 with aplomb. Gg no re for the desktop pc.

That could happen as early as 2013.

Only the hardest of hard core would need a pc and that won't be enough of a market to count for much.

Thanks for the links messiaah . read them all but they didn't a lay my fears for the desktop computer. Most of those innovations would work just as well on a mobile platform. Hooked up to a laptop or surface.

Laptops. Not powerful enough for most of them, also it have millions of ppl that play other games than dota lol.

games to look out for:

Starwars 1313, watchdogs, Tomb Raider, sc2 hots, etc.
But it pointless arguing anymore, just wait and see.

Since d gtx680 I sure more men on gatt upgrade dey desktop than d previous year.
Gg no re when dota could run comfy on surface? You so sad eh lololol.

Guess ms wasting they time with 720, by your logic, mobile taking over, mite as well bin d 720 project now lolololol. Sony should wrack up shop to, go into making tablets only tablets.

Sad.

Is not an argument, it is a discussion.

SC2 HOTS won't "require" a higher end desktop than what I've got now.

Nor any of those games.

I know that....intel knows that.

Come Christmas 2013....how many men going and run to get a new processor?

Wait.....we don't even have to go so far.....this Christmas, 2012, how many men here going and upgrade their CPU?

(crickets chirping)

Guess ms wasting they time with 720, by your logic, mobile taking over, mite as well bin d 720 project now lolololol. Sony should wrack up shop to, go into making tablets only tablets.

??? I don't understand what the 720 has to do with desktop PCs being passe.

Becuase the reason u claim going to cuase the pc to be dead would affect consoles as well.
And a higher end PC has never been 'required' to run any game.

Some men content with just dota, and low end graphics. Others not.

Bottom line is, i made enouhg points in d defense of PCs. Men could belive what they want. I personally strongly believe in technology innovation and advancement in every form. And i personally believe the PC will be around and a major player for decades to come.

Steam gamers adopting Windows 8 four times faster than general population

It seems, despite Valve’s protestations, Steams users are adopting Windows 8 four times faster than the general population.

Their own updated Steam hardware stats page shows in total 4.69 percent of users have already adopted Windows 8, versus between 1.44 percent and 1.09 percent according to Statcounter and NetApplications.

The percentage is more than half of the 8.07 Vista user base and exceeds the 3.26 percent Apple users.

The news is probably not that surprising, given that most gamers want to be on the cutting edge of PC technology, and that Windows 8 generally results in a faster PC, but it does suggest that Valve may want to rethink their objections to Windows 8 before a significant percentage of their users start running the OS.

You say you strongly believe in technology innovation and advancement in every form then go on to say that you believe the PC will be around and a major player for decades to come?

Is it so far fetched to conceptualize that the desktop PC will be disrupted by a technical innovation such as the ultrabook and the surface?

I still don't see how a declining desktop market affects the console market. Sony and Nintendo in particular don't have any stakes in producing CPUs or Operating Systems for that segment.

This is really a concern for Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel, AMD and the big oem players and by extension...the PC enthusiasts.

And as can be plainly seen....Microsoft is embracing mobile as their engine for growth for the future with Windows 8

Nvidia is already fully aligned in the mobile space with Tegra and Kepler
http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-death-of-the-desktop-how-kepler-is-killing-off-the-gaming-pc-6367503/

Intel just ousted their CEO and are looking for someone who can position them to score in mobile. They must be afraid of ARM supplanting them as the ubiquitous processor for everyday computing. We'll see if those fears are real when the intel based surface comes to market.

Scary is the talk of intel integrating cpus on their mobos. A story that didn't make sense before....but when you step back and read all of these articles.....the pieces start to come together.

The desktop is becoming less and less relevant.

Again, key word....desktop....this isn't a "PC Gaming" discussion as highlighted above.

@ Steam figures...I was expecting a greater adoption rate.

Only 4.69 %? Woefully low for an OS that is selling for as cheap as us$40.00

Microsoft basically giving the thing away! Men should run to buy it at that price.

wyatt.. personally i dont think you're being open minded enough about this and the way innovation is going...

first your discussion started by saying the PC era is over... whatever that is... the simple fact is.. it's not nor will it be... but it WILL be transformed.. because regardless of how you look at it personal computers will be around for quite sometime.. as messiaah said it may be built into our cars, homes, showers, glasses who knows...

onto the point of the desktop pc's... one thing you seem to be over-exaggerating on... lets look at industry for a minute.. the DESKTOP computer was once dominating the market because there were no other options or the other options just werent feasible in terms of price or ability, these days that has significantly changed and and options are easy to come by... so the rapid growth of the DESKTOP computer has halted.. it has for a long time now though, but lack of growth in a market does not mean death as you put it... apple's market share has took a serious hit since the advent of android.. does that mean they are dead?... nope... but they might be if they dont innovate...

again... i agree that the pc is transforming in general and that DESKTOP pc's AS WE KNOW it will be a thing of the past as laptops become more powerful and there is a convergence... but that computer thats gonna be running your house... may very well be the desktop pc of today, it starts with the media center now...

...and even those days are some years ahead

Right on the money phoenix.

You're saying exactly what I am saying.

So maybe Messiaah can read your post and understand what I'm talking about.

That's it....to a T. 100% agree.
