Well we kinda needs more info, Wyatt. you self:

size? 14? 15? 16? 17 inches?
intel graphics or ati/nvidia graphics?
battery life?
warranty?

I personally lean towards Dell first due to their outstanding warranty...

God is dead.

the new standard in laptops are asus and acer
price performance cant be beat.
Dell warranty is uber especially if you get a laptop from their small business section, but  their higher failure rate means yu will actually have to use their warranty and most of their laptops dont have discrete graphics.

So maybe we create two segments in each price range, discrete and integrated graphics.

If looking at Dell, I'd suggest a Studio 15 (and talking from experience).

Decent amount of power, discrete graphics, good battery life out of the 9-cell, solid screen quality (1600x900 res), and the one issue I had with the system was fixed in basically 2 business days (contacted them on Friday afternoon, got my replacement part Tuesday morning).

If you wanted to know the nature of the problem, it wasn't with the laptop itself, but just that the A/C adapter died about 2 months after purchase. They sent a new adapter, and no problems since August.

With the upgraded screen, video, battery etc, it should come up to just over $7K. Factor in an extra $100/175 US for 3 year warranty/Completecare.

That's a perfect and sound recommendation SPK. Studio 15.

I'll look into that.

This request is pretty old, went with a HP DV6 at the time

2.2GHz Intel Core2 Duo T6600 Processor (2MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
4 GB DDR3 RAM (2 Dimm), Max supported: 8 GB
500 GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive, LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
15.6" Diagonal High Definition HP LED BrightView Display(1366x768); Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (shared) with up to 1.6 GB total available graphics memory
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, *Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life

Came in under TT$7000.00

I was very impressed with both the looks and features. Haven't had need to call on the warranty as yet though.

I'd go with the studio 15 as well best bang for the buck and get the 256MB 4570HD it uses less shared ram than the 512MB version and it plays everything wonderfully

Not the best bang for the buck at that pricepoint
ASUS and acer definitely have better bang for buck hardware and functionality wise, DELL wins continuously based on their warranty thats all.

Sample Acer that wipes the floor with the dell for a good bit under the press of teh dellage (oh its a 3d screen btw)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QQ1WI0/ref=s9_simi_gw_s2_p147_t2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=1RPSGAP0Z2EYQZXF4ZSD&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846

This 17inch asus stomps all over that dell like rick james on eddy murphy's couch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220641
for about the same as the dell

and another example of ASUS barn dancing all over dells head

and ill throw in this touch screen acer.. just because they can do that

my contention is that you said its best bang for buck, which it completely is not.

Unfortunately, Dell real shoving refurb replacement parts up the @ss these days.

I guess a refurb replacement thats easy to come by is better then a possiby new component that is pressure to get.
