motherboard not recognizing 2gb ram
« on: July 31, 2009, 03:30:25 PM »
i have an amd mob and processor and bought a paired (2x2gb) ram stick running on 64 bit vista. however in boot up and in vista ( and cpuz etc) only one 2 gb stick is recognized. the other 2gb (loacated in dimm 0 slot) is not recognized.

this is the 2nd mobo i tried it on since i replaced it for the same problem. both ram is good since it was tested and when using only one stick in the dimm 0 slot, the pc does boot but gives an error beep. so is dimm 0 on both mobos bad or is there some setting in the bios that can be changed to enable the ram?

I'd say check for a bios update. See if that resolves the issue. Could be a fault with the stock bios. Also, you're sure u using dimm 0? Confirm in the booklet that the one u plugging into is in fact dimm 0.

And you can try other memory sticks as it could be an incompatibility with those particular sticks with that board.

its the first dimm slot. and when checking on cpuz and everest, they the dimm0 is empty but dimm1 is occupied. funny thing is the tech at the pc store who replaced the board tried the ram in the new board and said it was reading 4gbs but when i installed it into my case it read 2gbs alone. i don't want to update bios yet as its under warranty and i could carry it back to the store. just want to see if there are any bios settings that deal with it

Wow...misfortune just seems to follow you with these parts nowadays.

If you can, try using the RAM in a single-channel config, and see if all 4GB are recognised.
Then try all the dual-channel configs as described by the mobo manual.  You should follow
the goodly Cap'n's advice and update the BIOS.  A great majority of BIOS updates nowadays
are CPU microcode and RAM related.

...and who else will know the BIOS was updated?

Those techs would tell you anything if it means getting out of exchanging a product. You'd be safe with a BIOS update as you'd have to be intimately familiar with what version bios comes with which revision of the board and be astute enough to compare whats there to whats supposed to be there. Besides, once you dont fuxor it while doing so, you're safe.

carry your board to stock bios settings then go back in and set the ram manually.

that is. set the voltages, timings, and speed to what the ram is rated @.

if you let the mobo auto it, it can give troublems at times.

plix to link the mobo in question.

also, to mess up a bios update in this day and age is nearly impossible, 90% of boards worth their mettle have fail safes that can restore the original bios settings for you in the even that the bios update does indeed fail.

also if you new to building systems and such, you should really look at this as a learning experience. go on forums (just like you are here) and look up what others have done to resolve the problem, not only you buy that board, there must be someone out there with a similar problem, google your mobo, check manu site, etc.

also check to make sure the mobo you using can handle up to whatever amt of ram you using...that is, make sure it can take 4GB ram

yeah forgot to update.

when we were putting building the case, one of the bronze spacers were underneath the board, in one of the extra holes but it wasn't necessary and apparently it was shorting out the ram slot. when i removed the spacer the ram started back to work. i left the spacer by mistake when i changed mobos

Man, that is exactly why, when I replacing a mobo, I take out ALL dem spacers...

matter of fact, I starting to like cases that utilize the plastic kind

Depends on the type of spacers u use. U can use the plastic ones that screw onto the case and the mainboard snaps into it. I like those.
