Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes is like Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.

...both equally idiotic.

Guess they chose RDJ bcuz of his success with Iron Man, therefore by using him they could draw bigger crowds to this movie. Doesn't really bother me tho, it looks entertaining xD.

Also worth mentioning is that Hans Zimmer did the score for this movie.

Saw it last night.

From the offset, you might think Robert is a bad fit....but that is true of the old Sherlock. Think of this as a re-imagining for a new audience.

Watson gets the same treatment. Revamped and repositioned.

It's not the Sherlock you know (the trailer should have convinced most of that) but it is a brilliant movie all the same and a fun, entertaining romp. It worked on so many levels.

Not unlike the Star Trek reboot. Most welcome!

yea saw it today as well
was pretty decent, i had looked up what martial arts he was using before i saw it
something called bartitsu
english variation of jujitsu
pretty effective in the movie

i bawl when i saw him juji gatame the big giant

and i absolutely adore rachel mc adams so was great for me..
but frikkin cinemas 8 has sticky floors and flooded bathrooms
most un cool
they needed to play up the arch nemesis more though, lots of new comers to the franchise wont understand the hype of the arch nemesis

Agreed 100%. They should have turned up the notch on Lord Blackwood a little. He was a good villain but like you said, fell just short of true arch nemesis status.

He was a little too behind the scenes, so you couldn't fully appreciate how devious he was in setting all those traps and pit falls for Sherlock and the other lords.

i think Hugh Laurie would've made a much better Holmes ....i mean House is pretty much based on Holmes with a few tweaks....and the man is already British!!! i dunno what Guy Ritchie was thinking if he had any say in casting which I'm sure he did......

exactly my point, i didnt wanna call spoilers but i was speaking about Moriaty. Holmes's true nemesis. thy just very lightly teased about him but if they want people to come back for more, make Moriaty a real presence so we know why we should think hes worth Holmes's time.

And after tropic thunder, RDJ can play any frakking role he wants.

I dont mind different nationalities playing a role, but i do have a problem with randomly changing the race of a roll. Like mc King pin in Daredevil, wtf was that about!

The man's nationality should not be an issue, seriously guys, he's an actor, that's what they do, pretend to be other people. Was Gerard Butler's role as Leonidas (spartan) in 300 any less convincing because he was Scottish? How About Mel Gibson as William Wallace (scottish)? or maybe Russel Crowe as Jim Braddock (american)? Complaining about casting people with varying nationalities boils down b!tching at the end of the day, what you should ask yourself is; Can Robert Downey Jr carry this role convincingly and successfully?

RDj is an actor, and an exceptional one at that, and that's enough for me.

Lars u missing my point is not abt nationality is abt the fact that Laurie already plays Holmes as house.....as the house character is based on Sherlock Holmes an he portrays House exceptionally..... i'm ah big fan of RDJ since before his comeback with ironman so I'm not disputing his acting capabilities its just that Hugh would've fit that role like a glove .......

He was just making a cameo in this first outing yes.

man probably had what? 9 seconds of screen time total? lol

and while he maybe a mastermind, he wasn't the mastermind behind Blackwood's plot. He merely took advantage of Holmes to secure the item he needed. Nice setup for the part deux.

Ok, that may be so, but lets just say that an actual British actor may have provided a little more 'authenticity' to the role.

So by your logic, if say, Colin Farrell were cast as the next Spiderman, you wouldn't have a problem with that?  After all, he's an actor too.

Once RDJ plays the part well, i don't see any problem with it. That is all that should matter.
