Quote

It’s obviously a week for leaky video cards, as after the first sighting of Sapphire’s stonking Radeon HD 5970 yesterday comes in-the-wild images of NVIDIA’s rival card, the GTX 480.  Based on the company’s Fermi architecture, the GTX 480 is tipped to begin arriving on cards from select manufacturers this month.

One of the most obvious elements in the card’s design is the huge power supply, complete with six regulation lines; that ties in to some details NVIDIA revealed at CeBIT 2010 this week.  Apparently the GTX 480 will be particularly power hungry, and you’ll likely need a 600W minimum PSU.

It’ll also require special fans to keep it cool, not that we’re too surprised at that given the performance angle NVIDIA are going for.  They’ve apparently said that the GTX 480 will be more potent than ATI’s Radeon HD 5870, particularly when it comes to Open CL performance under OS X Snow Leopard.  We’ll have to wait and see when the first shipping cards hit review benches, hopefully later this month.

Call me awesome-damus and mark my words when I say we're going to have an EXACT duplication of the 4870 vs GTX280 conundrum, just in the next generation. Slightly more powerful but much hotter and MUCH more expensive, too expensive to be viable.

It could be even worse as the 480 looking like its poised to break some power consumption records.

Well, so far looks like my predictions are not too far from the truth.

Still, nobody started talking pricing yet. That will be a big determining factor in its success/failure.

anything but total blowout of d 5870 is fail, because at this point, dey cant top amd price, and if dey doo, amd will drop price, and release d 5890

if d greenteam cant top amd performance by a significant amount, dey fail. lol, watch and see.

and they recent drivers fiasco is not helping matters.

Well imho this is the typical tug of war they have, it's been going on forever now since the days of the 9700 by ATI. The 9700 led the Geforce 3 series and even the 4. Then the 5 came out and was still struggling, but the 6 though (a little slower) was a great card, then by the time they hit the 7 cards they were beginning to pull away. The 8 was Massively successfuly and now ATI is back with its 4xxx and 5xxx. The 4xxx is akin to the 6xxx series Geforce in that they were GREAT cards that slightly underperformed compared to the competition but were priced right. So in effect we have DAAMITs equivalent of the 8 series geforce ftw. I still waiting on prices to drop. I hope in the least it will make things more affordable.

Well if history is any indicator, the 480 will be priced significantly more than the current 5xxx cards, thus there will be no incentive for daamit to dop prices until the next gen comes out.

A refresh could help in that depertment but not very much.

You have some waiting to do to get any significant price drops, but I have the feeling that you're in no hurry.

No, i hold both companies at d same standard, i have no loyalties, whoever better, dies who i going with.

i rock d geforce 2 and 3, i rock d 9700/9800 ati, and i rock d 8800gt/gtx.
all those cards were the best in their time, and significantly blow out d compition.

if nvidia cant blow out amd 6 month old card, i not even wasting my time.

i hope dey do, harder d compition, is only we benifitin, but nviida get too overconfident, and underestimate amd.

d 4000 cards, lash dem hard, and d 5000 series even more so.

ati was playing cetchup, but now d roles reverse, nvidia playing cetchup :)

and soooner or later, it go switch again

Well

GeForce GTX 480 : 512 SP, 384-bit, 295W TDP, US$499

GeForce GTX 470 : 448 SP, 320-bit, 225W TDP, US$349

Internal benchmarks reveal that GeForce GTX 470 is some 5-10% faster than Radeon HD 5850 and similiar for GeForce GTX 480 over the Radeon HD 5870.

http://vr-zone.com/articles/nvidia-g...aled/8635.html

note that ati/amd are releasing new drivers that claims a 5-10% performance increase, this not only negates ( if true ) the claimed performance increase of fermi but also AMD/ATI can still drop their prices and are rumored to have a refresh waiting to launch soon, looks like nvidia is gonna get eaten alive price/performance wise before they even release, not to mention the power usage for the cards is said to be higher than AMDs.

http://forum.donanimhaber.com/m_38492871/tm.htm

According to this, the real 10.3 WHQL will be released at 24 March, but AMD will make a non-WHQL 10.3a available today through underground.amd.com.
