sweet @ rage deal. Pity I have it already.

Would have gotten max payne 3 but I have WAYYYY too many great games yet to play to justify buying it.

By time I get around to finishing my current library, we maybe going through steam summer sale 2013, lol

I am so sorry I loaded steam during this sale... right now debating whether to get Age of Empires III: Complete Collection at 75% off - $9.99 or to get what I added to my cart earlier today: Fable The Lost Chapters at 75% off - $2.49 + Dawn of War - Platinum Edition at 75% off - $7.49 (cart total = $9.98)

Decisions, decisions...  :ko:

now this is nothing short of a miracle.

Not sure what Microsoft did to piss off Gabe to this extent.

Finally, we maybe able to put together a gaming rig minus the sticker price of a Windows license.

Wish they had confirmed Dota2 as well as L4D2.

An fps and a moba would have been fantastic launch titles for Steam on Linux.

As if Windows 7 will suddenly stop being relevant when Windows 8 launches.  :laughing7:

I wouldn't be so quick to load up them distros just yet.

Consumers aren't the ones balking here.  We have no reason to run from Win 8.

The people crying foul are those with the most to lose when Microsoft releases a tightly integrated Windows Store that will rival steam, battlenet, origin, etc.....

If they can have the same success that others have had with their platform "marketplace", the Windows Store will become the defacto merchant for your wares on the PC.

That is SCARY for Blizzard, Valve, et al. It will hit them hard where it hurts most.....their wallet.

So what to do? Valve throws a hissy fit and promises Steam on ubuntu. This will start a new era which could very well lead to a viable gaming platform outside the windows eco system.

That is very very welcome news for techies and open source aficionados. So we may benefit from this nuclear fall out.

I will be first in line to fire up a gaming linux rig to run dota 2. lol

Note, Valve could have done this all the time. The *nix user base has been begging for steam for ages. It took some corporate bullying by Microsoft to make them spring into action.

C'est la vie.

Valve can do or say what they want.
Most developers are not going to go through the hassle to develop and test additionally for linux machines.
The fact of the matter is that the windows development stack reaps more profits as a result of it's huge user base.

That said, who said we have to move to windows 8? or to install it on our gaming machines?

I will be using my windows 7 until there is some REAL reason to move to 8.

We don't need most developers, we just need Valve.

They have enough quality games to make steam on *nix make sense.

If blizzard joins the party, well gg

A man could game for eternity on ubuntu without ever having to pass over another dollar to Microsoft.

Dota 2 would have been the perfect launch title for this move, seeing as it is free to play and would fit in better with the general spirit of linux users.

L4D2 carried a sticker price last I checked.

You think that goes for everyone?
How much u gonna play valve and blizzard games over and over?
And maybe you can do it, but some of us still want other games...

All i'm saying is that valve is still going to be selling games from other developers as well as themselves over steam... on Windows 8.
Watch and see.

Of course Valve will continue to milk the windows platform. Via Windows 7 or 8.

Like I said, this is a hissy fit.

They are panicked by the very real threat of a dominant Windows store and what that could mean to their profits.

What better way to challenge Microsoft than to create an even bigger threat. An opensource top tier gaming platform.

*nix wins by gaining a heavy weight game developer and its top tier titles.

That is reason to rejoice. Especially if others follow in the not too distant future. Imagine what a vibrant gaming platform linux could become. It is long long overdue.

Emancipation iwmc.

I had hoped Android would mature and rise to be that challenger to Microsoft in the gaming space but it looks as though Valve may help bestow the crown on Ubuntu.

Overwhelmingly THIS!!! ^^^

Of the 48 games on Steam that I currently have, guess how much is Valve.  9.
Guess how much I have installed?  2
Guess how much I actually play (on a regular basis)?  0

We don't need most developers, we just need Valve.

Ahm...no.
Valve's games are good, no doubt.  One or two top-tier, even, but they certainly won't make
the predominantly Windows-based user base move en-masse to Linux.  Not now.  Not for a while.
Linux has a quite a ways to go in terms of device, and driver support.  Those two very critical things
will keep Linux as a geek-only OS for gaming.  Not everyone (including me) has the technical know-how,
and/or patience to deal with Linux as is to set up a credible gaming rig.  Even then, there has to be a monster
of a 'killer-app' to justify the headache.

Sorry to piss all over your utopian dream there TW... :laughing7: ...but Windows gaming is here to stay...for while longer at least.

A techie would have no problem installing ubuntu, nor would any open source aficionado.

Ubuntu is shockingly easy to install. Not like the distros of old. I'd say, its even easier than windows.

Try it and see.

Out of the gate, if Valve gives us L4D2 and Dota 2, that would be epic. Proof of concept is all we are looking at here in the short term.

Again, this is great news for techies and linux users who have been clamoring for better gaming support for ages.

The windows gamers (like yourself arc) have nothing to worry about (and that includes Win7 and Win8 users)

Only the marketplace vendors (like Valve, Blizzard, EA) should be panicking over the Windows store that's integrated into Windows 8.

You can remain on that platform just fine, no need to switch.

I hope they offer cross platform play. Running some Dota 2 from my *nix box with my son on his Windows 7 / 8 box would be sweet.
