You guys havent been following the whole release of the 4890 and the gtx275 have you.

ATI was supposed to drop the 4890 on the 2nd April, which they did. Nvidia came out of the blue, literally overnight to announce that their 275 was coming out on the 2nd as well. In fact, they DID launch it on the 2nd and claimed that it would be widely available on that date. However, industry insiders correctly asserted that this card was a last minute last ditch effort to have a bit of competition for ati, so much so that they used a cut down version of the gtx280 to make them. They do not even have a SKU for this part people. Its like a poor afterthought of a child.

Not the first time, won't be the last.

ATI and Nvidia have been playing this cat and mouse game for years.

The $250 price point is a very interesting one and it speaks to sensible buyers. Those not willing to go for broke on the latest and greatest card.

It's an important segment. I'd expect to see a lot of warring over it.

Just read this interesting article from Anandtech:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3539&p=1

They recommend the 4890 at lower resolutions (1920x1200 and below) Imagine that, 1920x1200 and the term "lower resolution" in the same sentence! The world has gone mad.

That is my sweet spot though, so based on their review, the ATI get's the nod.

It was also very interesting to see the side by side video of Mirrors Edge showing the benefit of the Physx engine. Not show stopping, but something I'd appreciate. Nod to Nvidia.

Another side note, seems you've got to be on Beta drivers for the ATI card to match the 275. Using the stable drivers, it gets a cutarse.

In conclusion, the cards are close enough in performance that either will be a welcome addition to a PC near you. That, is a good thing. Choose your poison, red or green. lol

I think TechReport's comments here puts this whole argument in perspective.
Either card seems like win.  Its left up to the buyer to decide where their loyalties lie.

So, Nephilim...what say you?

So, Nephilim...what say you?

i says 4870

at the price point it is hard to beat, the extra performance of the 90 is appealing...but my game rez is <19x16 so i won't really see the real benefit of it..also is like 50USD more :)

Well, that kind of reasoning I certainly cannot argue with.
Make sure and get this one though.  The better cooler really makes a difference with the heat,
and it allows you to OC it to 790/1100.
