I could do better than that, had to help out one of my friends on something like this, ended up with a system for about $48000 US, not counting shipping etc.

The CPU, motherboard, PSU and RAM recommendations are the same with Wintry's choices, but mine stray a bit from there onwards, which drops the price by a few thousand, but should still come up to around $40k US:

2x EVGA GTX 295 1792MB video cards (SLI
3ware 9690SA-8E-KIT PCI-Express x8 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Controller Card
2x Fujitsu MBA3300RC 300GB 15000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Hard Drive (External drives)
5x OCZ Core Series V2 Solid State Drive - 250GB, 2.5" SATA
Lian Li ARMORSUIT Red Anodized Aluminum Super Tower
Sony Blu-Ray Player/Recorder
NEC Display Solutions LCD5710-2-AV Black 57" LCD (Primary display)
Optoma HD81 1080p DLP High Definition Home Theater Projector w/ BX-AL133 Anamorphic Lens (Secondary monitor)
Optimus Maximus Keyboard
Gyration GP6005M Mouse
SteelSeries SX Mousepad
Digital Audio CarDeluxe PCI Sound Card
Bose Companion 5 Speakers
APC Symmetra LX 8KVA UPS.

I'd have to recalculate the final cost, but it's certainly WELL OVER 30k USD...

Whatever you wish to use it for... :D

But the idea of that assignment was just to make it as expensive as possible, so the original idea had Xeons w/ a board that could take 32GB of DDR2 RAM etc....

I'm a little confused.

The purpose of this ultimate PC thread, is to allow us to put together the greatest components available. Regardless of price.

If new stuff comes out, just put it together in a new configuration and voila....updated Ultimate PC.

Just as we do for all the other configurations.

Want to take a crack at it? I'm sure you could put together something more powerful than W1ntry's config in the first post by now.

For starters, I would definitely include one of those new Intel X25M Solid State drives, if not two.
