Good games for older laptops/desktops
« on: January 11, 2009, 12:34:26 AM »
Hi

I have an old Intel Centrino laptop and have been playing some fun games on it. Since it aint the most powerful machine I wanted some new games that could still run on old hardware. I noticed a few new games have come out in 2D using physics as the main gameplay mechanic. Give these a try you might get addicted :p

World of Goo - http://2dboy.com/games.php

Crayon Physics Deluxe - http://www.crayonphysics.com/

Peggle Nights - http://www.popcap.com/games/peggle-nights

My question is does anyone know of any other recent games that run well on older laptops? With multiplayer?

The Age of empires series might suit you well with an older machine. Try empire earth 2 and see how that runs. you can also emulate as well, N64 games shouldn't be too troublesome and there are lots of great games for GBA.

Warcraft , Half Life , Medal of Honour , Quake , Max payne and other games made 2001 and prior would run just fine .

Some very good 2d RPGS like Baldurs gate will also make you a happy man.

you'd get alot of value also from SNES emulators (super nintendo) gameboy and other low end programs.

Geometry Wars is also on PC via steam, is like 5USD for it or sum, Steam has lots of nice small games like that.

max payne would need a T&L compliant card to play as well as spiderman

conquer online will run very well
as well of course star craft, diablo 2, gun bound
oh and you may also try soul reaver 1 and 2... infact iam going to go .. acquire soul reaver 2 right now never got to finish it, was loving it but then life got in the way.

Black and white 1 will also play, but it will leach your soul worse than WoW so beware.

Yeah I found an old Playstation magazine from 2001, after looking through the screenshots, really amazing at how things have improved. Everything looks so blocky etc. Also made me realize at how little exclusives there are this time around, back then with Xbox being pretty low on the map the whole magazine was filled with pretty much exclusives......

Try call of duty 1,Soldier of fortune 2, Unreal tournament. I know of many others but can think of them all right now, these should do the trick. Have fun  :happy0203:

I totally forgot about good old emulation for snes games. Been looking around for an emulator that supports lan and got an old copy fo znes.

Tetris 2 is really good and works surprisingly well on these laptops. I was wondering if yall could recommend some other good snes multiplayer games? The puzzle ones seem to go down good lol.

Are there any emulators for other systems that have easy to setup lan games?

Thanks!

why stop at snes? I love me some znes action but Mame has SOOO much more to offer.

The complete set of mame roms runs over 10gb and new games are being added all the time.

you're bound to find something you love.

A lot of great multiplayer action too since most arcade games were designed for 2 players. I like that most of 'em are co-op, which is a good thing if you're looking for some casual mp sweatage.

Just broke out mame again today to entertain some kids. Plug in a few gamepads and show 'em the coin button, voila. Whole day of distraction idmc.

Some real gems on there, I ended up wading into the fray a few times myself.

Running on a laptop, hooked up to a TV on Svideo (which mame32 loves, graphics wise, the games render arcade perfect)

Noob is there any MAME emu that supports netplay? We like to use our laptops to play via lan since less hassle with getting extra controllers etc...

"shudders @ the thought of getting controllers being considered a hassle"

Any old controller would do, cheap usb ones abound. Keeps the "arcade-ey" feel.

You're getting games that people would have spent a million quarters on for free. Least you could do is pony up the dough for a decent controller or two. lol

As for multiplay,

Good luck and good hunting.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 is my favourite MAME puzzle game

Try it out if you haven't played it yet.
Netplay is possible via Kaillera Mame : http://www.kaillera.com/download.php

Haha Hsaka you know I just bought this to play with my girlfriend on PSN. It is fun we played for hours.

Thanks though will definitely download this as well for when we not home. Older games are great!
Is it easy to setup a server though for lan play?
