Though I am a Gears of War 2 man myself, I have to give cred where cred is due and GTA IV was fantastic in every way.

Well the voters have spoken, and though there could have been hundreds of votes more, the simple poll shows MGS4 with a narrow win.

WOW... how did a game that's not even cross platform win this?I know how it's cause its the best game to come to the PS3 and the PS3 fanboys had nothing else to go on XD whereas the PC and 360 crew had more good titles and were forced to split their votes. I've never even seen footage of actual gameplay and it WON game of the year? WTF....

It's not a knock as much as it is a how does a game on ONE platform win game of the year? and my reasoning was very sensible. I voted GTA IV (inspite of thinking GOW2 is the best thing since sliced cheese) but since GTA IV is cross platform and was a VERY enjoyable gaming experience even for someone more into FPS, I just don't see how a game on ONE platform could have won other than my suspected reason.

Platform exclusive games get nominated for GOTY all the time...
And every so often those exclusive games win. (Edit: Gamespot gave MGS4 their GOTY Award also http://www.gamespot.com/best-of/game-of-the-year/index.html?page=1)

When you have a game like MGS4 which is arguably one of he best of all time and then map that to the ratio of people who saw this poll and have played it, it's clear it would win...
So, no problem here.... I do understand your logic but it doesn't fully apply here.

Again much more people could have voted so MGS4 winning is still not an accurate representation of the entire GATT community.
Maybe this year I'll expand this event a good bit more and reach out to all GATT members.

Consider this, Dead Space, GOW2, COD WAW and GTA IV are ALL on the 360 AND are ALL great games, consider that GTA IV lost by 1 vote. When you think about it, let's imagine the ONLY game out of the 4 I called was GTA IV and it was on the PC and 360, whom do you think would have won???

a console exclusive on an exclusive console
beating out more ubiquitous games for GOTY, and the contenders cant be called shabby either.. even though i have no love for any gta since 2, i cant see cod and gow 2 with its insane hype being bested by MGS4 seriously... fanboyism conquers all *sigh*

winny made a good point, MGS4 may have been the best game of the year on the PS3 so the ps3 owners and fans rate the game, while the game is not cross platform, so no one outside of the ps camp would vote it for lack of oppurtunity to play it. While at the same time, there were 3 or 4 big cross platform titles this year that got votes spread across them.

While it may not be right to say that a non cross platform game cannot win GOTY because of the exclusivity of the title...because there have been awesome exclusives such as golden eye of old that deserved the game of the year of its time... THIS TIME this occasion i think its more complicated... if there was a way to directly compare the gameplay experience of MGS4 versus that of other games on other platforms and THEN it still got the nod as GOTY then it wins outright but again.. the ps3 is just to exclusive a platform to unwaveringly give it support.

Complicated it is, because when sc2 launches, its going to automatically be GOTY even though its a pc exclusive.. but... the whole of korea= more than enuff thumbs up to suggest a game is pretty awesome.

All of you have your points and I can understand them fully.

But the fact of the matter is people on GATT voted for MGS4 by a marginal one vote difference.
Hey it could just be my vote that took the lead, but seriously guys, this debate on who should have won, exclusive titles should not have one, the shoulda, woulda, coulda's that Laertes is getting at.

Come on guys...its just a fun voting poll here on GATT.
Go to Gamespot forums and put your points there because they too gave MGS4 GOTY.

I have to throw my ballot in with Apprentice.

I remember how uber Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was. Nothing could top that, on any platform and yes, that game was a gamecube exclusive. I did serious hoops, including overclocking my pc by 50%, to play that game on an emulator because I didn't own a cube at the time.

If this game is so great, being on one system does not and should not form grounds for argument.

Also, yes, it does give it an advantage in that the PS3 camp have only one forerunner candidate to vote for whereas the PC and xbox 360 camp have quite a number of good options. Life is not fair and no one said it would be.

It means a PC title needs to be far and away the best PC game of the year (like Half Life was) to compete with a PS3 exclusive title that is also far and away the best on it's platform.

Ain't nothing wrong with that.

The only thing I'll say is next year we gotta market and promote the poll itself a bit to get more voters involved.

We should have had hundreds of votes. Get the thing on the frontpage, etc... A few banners and all.
