Should i become the Core i7 guinea pig?
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:48:13 PM »
Well as ive been saying, ill be starting my build soon.
Was supposed to be end of november.. HR stick.. so now end of december is my new beginning date for start of my build.

I had previously decided on a nice quad build supplemented by a fine choice of nvidia cards.

While i intend to keep the card power and hd choices the same... iam actually game to a core i7 build.

I did the numbers and the i7 build would only run a few hundred tt more than the quad build soooo

BAsed on votes up until end of december, ill be willing to be the core i7 guinea pig.

Well it's a no brainer as it's the forward thinking approach. Don't buy into a platform that's on the way out. That aside, the Core i7 are logical oct cores since there is HyperThreading on a quad XD. By all means crixx be the damn guinea pig, your rig needs an update more than Michael Jackson needs a nose XD

Seriously? Only a few hundred TT more? What kind of non i7 build WERE u planning? Detailed breakdown of tentative components would be nice. Also, same details for your proposed i7 build, paying particular attention to the board and memory to be used. The cheapest i7 cpu alone is about $100us more than the cheapest C2Q. Then there's the business about the still rediculously priced DDR3 and not to mention a worthy board on which to use the parts (which runs at least $335 for a decent one. As far as I can see, an i7 build is going to cost significantly more than a c2q one given current prices.

As i said before, hit we a breakdown, maybe there's something i'm missing.

Check these out though...

MSI X58 Platinum

Intel Corei7 920

3 x 1GB Corsair DDR3

Total cost = 650 US, or about 4200 TT

If you spending about 8-9K to build a whole new rig, I don't see why the parts above won't be adequate.
That rig will certainly be faster than anyone's on this forum.  That much is certain.

Might be cheaper on Newegg, but I don't buy from there.
Very 'doable' in my opinion.

I say, if you can afford it, go for it.

I don't know about anyone else, but if you've experienced 8 gigs of memory, its tough to go any lower than that...not even 6 will cut it for me. So what's next? 12gigs? hmmmm

I'm still interested to see a direct comparison between similarly clocked i7 and c2 cpu's.

Well, you could start with a 3GB and always get more RAM eh.
Those of you still in doubt about Corei7's performance vs Core2 need only to read this article.

I have no doubt the New i7 is superior to the c2q. This is not my concern, I would just like to see a comparison between an overclocked c2q and the 920, preferably both of the same clock speed to get a feel for the actual performance difference.

iam refraining from showing my build as yet.

ive taken enough flack over the past few years for my long in the tooth but still chugging along like a good old battle axe machine.

But like i said, i only had to change board ram and cpu, everything else with my previous proposed build stayed the same and the price difference was only a few hundred dollars(a thousand dollars is still just a few hundred dollars ^_^)

most people are worried about the 1st gen i7 boards and how buggy or not they will be
thats why iam offering to be the guinea pig.

I dont want to wait till march or june to change my rig so i gotta buy within a month
and even though x48 is so well established at this point... i will have to wait another 3 years or so to make another complete over haul of my rig, so i shouldnt stay on that platform... otherwise ill be the long in the tooth guy again...
AND ill be mega old... like baego level old..

I read somewhere that the P6T board is having issues with the i7 and having rampant BSOD issues. Something to do with Compatibility issues...you may want to look into that..not too sure. Better to be safe than $299.99 in the hole...

yeah ive checked around and i was first going with the evga but then found it doesnt support 1600 ddr3 and some other small features missing. THe asus seems to be the most well rounded board, performing in top tier in everything with out sacrificing one thing for anything else.

All the boards so far have had issues with 12 gig setups but have worked them out in bios tweeks.
Iam starting at 6gigs and then going to 12 a lil later.

Unless by end of december one of the other boards makes a miraculous jump to the front, then the asus is still in the lead atleast for safety of early adoption.

I dont like msi, never have, never will but they were pretty much ranked second. and gigabyte a close thurd

Go with the second option for now.
The blu-ray drive I don't see as an absolute necessity, but you did say you wanted
to build a multimedia 'behemoth' as well.

What PSU you going with exactly?
