Old Republic in short supply [PC]
Monday August 22, 11:25 AM

Electronic Arts is expecting high demand for its online multiplayer game ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’, but is only launching it in limited quantities. Why is that?

EA is capping the number of physical and digital copies of the game at launch so that servers are not overwhelmed by too many gamers trying to play at once. Everyone should be able to enjoy a “smooth and high quality game experience” as EA tells Gamasutra.com.

The downside to this noble intention is a controlled supply of games until EA decides that the time is right to add more servers. There’s no official word on when that might happen, but EA is already advising potential customers to pre-order the game good and early, because “...Once they are gone, they are gone."

So is this an act of prudence on EA’s part or has it taken leave of its corporate senses? A bit of both, we suspect: Star Wars games sell by the million so EA really should have enough servers in place for everyone who wants to play. On the other hand, EA has probably learned lessons from other massive multiplayer games such as Rift and Aion, where sudden demand swamped server capacities and customers had to endure lengthy waits before playing. And nobody wants that, do they?

The only problem with EA’s plan is how the company is going to know to add more servers when the current provision is based on the fixed number of games it’s releasing. Ach, we’ll let them worry about that further down the line. Meantime, the web is awash with enticing trailers that really aren’t helping to control demand – see below, then try denying that you want a copy.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is scheduled for launch on PC this Holiday season.

This is a good AND bad thing... on the one hand I can TOTALLY appreciate them not wanting servers to crash (been there done that think Halo 3, GOW2, etc). But on the other hand it could also be a tool for marketing... I think its a bit of both, what do yal think?

I think a company as vast and powerful as EA should not even have considered this a problem (which they're also doing for BF3 m/c). If Blizzard's Battle.net can support millions of players for not ONE, not TWO but FIVE games (WoW, SC, SC2, Diablo, WC3) I don't see why a company like EA can't for one MMO =/. That's just my 2c about it.

Correct me if i'm wrong in any way of course.

Well there is a distinct difference (as best I know) between battlenet and specific servers for 1 game. Battlenet is a PLATFORM which services all those titles. Sure its servers and facilitates matchmaking and data storage, but i'm sure the actual game servers are different sets of dedicated resources. Now consider that it's a PLATFORM as in an eco system of parts for the entire company in question.

SWOR is just 1 title and is not part of a single PLATFORM aka ecosystem for EA games. If/when EA Origin service has matured, indicating their entire management structure is built up and in its 3rd+ iteration, THEN launching a new SINGLE titles on ur platform shouldn't be an issue. Remember this game is going to be niche and there is NO existing install base from which you are guaranteed patronage, thus they HAVE to (from a sensible economic pov) treat it as a standalone and provide the hardware at NO cost up front.

I figure they are also being pessimistic about the adoption rate so that based on sales they can expand, reduce or maintain as needed. No point in having say 500 servers in the cluster when only 100 in use. The cost just can't be justified to the investment committees.

So i know Crixx has the game and we've lost him already. Eagle is waiting for his copy. Triniblocker i believe has the game as well. Anyone else?

Not that i intend to get it, at least not any time soon, we can start putting together a roster for those who are playing to form a guild and play together.

Ok from playing it for the last two days, and from a man who usually stays very far from mmos, I gotta say this thing is bloody well done. (this is not a review, more a first look from a noob perspective with very little experience with mmos)

Even as a Single player rpg, if you appreciated, Knights of the old Republic, Mass Effect 2, or Dragon Age, you would positively LOVE this game. This is the Bioware pedigree!!!
The depth is there, the production value is there, the choice system is there. the sound quality, voice acting, graphics, atmosphere all there in spades. Also the attention to Star wars lore is staggering.

I was skeptical as to how much your decisions affect the world for your character, but they do, npcs move differently ,and the world truly changes according to your decisions. Id even go as far to say that this game could almost be played as a single player rpg, cause the game has a personal narrative which moves according to your chocies., the worlds are vast, questing is fun and not tedious and there is loot beautiful loot.

Id leave others to comment on the deep mmo aspects, since I have nothing but basic experience in this genre (one month in boring ass Wow, and playing Dc universe for a spell) but so far as a Star Wars nerd, this game delivers. heck even Skyrim get put down. So far ive joined a guild, done a few flashpoint quests (team based quests) and really enjoyed the 'social' aspect of it. Cant say the same for Wow at all. Even the leveling in this is fun.
So far im hearing people saying that this is way better than wow, but well we will see how it fares long term. For what its worth, this has been a stellar launch.

Got a level 17  Empire Imperial Agent, a level 11 Republic Smuggler, and a level 3 Empire Bounty Hunter.

Here is one review that pretty much nails all my opinions on it so far.
