Nintendo DSi
« on: October 02, 2008, 03:12:41 AM »

Nintendo have announced a new version of the Nintendo DS. Called the Nintendo DSi.

The GBA slot is now gone in favour of a slight downsizing (it's a little thinner) and a range of improvements.
The handheld's screens have been enlarged, and will now be 17% bigger (at 3.25 inches) than those found on the DS Lite. As for the rumoured additions, both have proven to be correct, with "audio enhancements" made to the handheld, while it will also now include a .3 megapixel (640x480) camera.

The DSi also features an SD memory card slot, making it possible to take pictures with the DSi and then view them on the Nintendo Wii. The DSi features a built-in browser, and it's possible to download games and keep them on the DSi.

The DSi will be released in Japan on November 1.
It will retail for ¥18,900 (USD$180), and will be available in two colours, white and black. It will be released in other markets sometime "next year".

DS now looks appealing to me...

the lite was a much favoured upgrade for my little nephew
he plays his gba games and his ds games nonstop
has no need for the camera or sd slot

so iam guessing this is a "ds for daddies" lol

p.s the light was far to small for my hands
i always felt like i would break the damn thing and had to do awkward hand placements to sweat fifa

Theonly driving reason for meto geta DS is to play those awesome pokemon games...haha...

But ent on the DS Lite you were able to put it your old pokemon GBA cartridge and copy your pokemon onto the new ds cartridge?
It would suck if I can't get all my level 100's onto the new game...

My point exactly, the inter-media exchange, as well as other add ons that use the GBA slot. Not that I would buy the Guitar Hero for DS that uses the SLot, but what about the R4DS and the TTDS? I can see using Roms becoming even easier with the introduction of the SD card slot, but now this just means new DS buyers won't have the choice of the full range of available games. After this drops in Price (considerably, since PSP dominates in most ways imo) I'll consider it. Now that both of my sibs have DS's it'd be pretty cool to play together once in a while.

ooo...
Just realised that Guitar Hero won't work with it.... well thats lame..
But not a significant amount of titles as laertes said...

Don't know bout rumble..
But an update is that the DSi has 2 cameras, one on the outside and on in the middle on the inside.\
Did not notice in the picture :P

OK that...THAT is pretty cool. Video conferencing maybe? But did I read that right? 0.3 MP camera? As for the structural part of this, the dimensions of this new one and the weight and feel of the Lite makes me wonder if this is kiddy friendly. DS for Daddies indeed.

From a purely technical standpoint, it seems like Nintendo is playing 'catch up' to the PSP with this device.
I will admit, the cameras and the larger screens is a step in the right direction, but Sony's device is still superior
in many ways.  I actually sold my DS Lite to get a PSP.  I don't see anything in this update thats really compelling
enought to want this version either.

Pass.

Ok first up the camera on the outside is 3MP not 0.3. The one on the inside facing the player is o.3 and nintendo says the resolution will be standard vga their claim not mine. The device will playback AAC also (less loss than mp3) the screen resolution is said to be higher by pc world reviewers who claim that pictures displayed on the screen were suprisingly good. built in browser, MORE INTERNAL RAM yes you read right so no need for ram add on catridges for browsing features. INTERNAL STORAGE. you can download a demo to internal flash storage in addition to the SD and the SD is actually SDHC. imagine a 32 gig card in this baby in the hands of an undercover blogger. browser with the touch screen as a virtual keyboard men feeling you playin pokemon when you taking out 3MP images of them and uploading it straight from the device, remember built in mike and the device has a sound recorder function so you uploading text and images with audio . this thing mad mad. the upgrades were minimal but they were the right ones for the mobile blogger / gamer. and in three months time you will be playing roms straight outa sd and viewing word and excel docs and pdf's when the mod com gets their hands on this. THis can turn into the perfect Gaming PDA.

Yea...initially details were sketchy regarding the camera.
It is indeed a 3megapixel cam on the outside...
Great resolution .

the dsi now has 256MB internal flash memory in addition to the SD card. the memory is divided into blocks 1024 in total each 250KB it can be used for saves demos  or multimedia ie pictures from the built in cams or sound  and voice recordings that you make on the device itself, it is said to also support downloads via the browser so you can store webpages and content via the net.
nice adition if the internal flash can be modded into virtual ram like what modders did with the palm tx a world of possibilities opens up. i wish this is released in the west sooner than next spring.
this device has the potential to become a full on PDA for adult users i wonder if you could port garnet into this thing, there is a garnet virtual machine running on nokia phones alredy

I call it the Nintendo "Doh Study It". Although people now buying a DS (all 3 of you)...now is a good time to get one.
Funny thing is at Blizzcon of all places REAL men had DS's and there were LEVEL wifi chatrooms open with people just talking WoW/SC and Diablo talk while men taking a five, eating lunch and all kinda ting.
