Been eyeing drives of this size and yes the prices continue to fall but the amount of cuss I would do if one of those things go bad and lose that crapload of info stored on it will keep me away from them for the while....

ENT!!!   I not trusting ALL my data to just one big drive nah.  Too many people (including me)
have lost too much irreplaceable data due to unexpected HDD failure.

As ah say dat, mih mind run on Cap'n Awesome 500 GB drive failure.

as we on the topic or hdd raid and such, I'm looking for a good app that can bench hdd and array performance, anyone know a good one, i need it for 2k3 btw.

Edit:

also on the topic of raid 5, In the event that you have a software raid, and host OS fails (MS server/linux) would it be possible to drop said drives in a machine with said host OS or similar and recover the data? assuming that you have no hardware failures?

i was doing allot of reading on the subject and I've seen allot of people recommending the use of hardware raid (true hardware i should say) for any array using parity since the controller not the OS/On-board/Hardware assisted Software add-in card handles that stuff. So in the event of critical failure of mobo or OS; remove add-in->drop in machine->get data, otherwise, you have a setta disk that need each other to read a file and they have no idea what going on...the only raid solution I've seen that the majority agree on that have little to no maintenance is a mirror, as both drives can be used independently, any failure (software or hardware bar the drive itself) won't affect your data.

this is strictly from a fault tolerance and recovery point of view. performance and storage considerations through the window for now...

RAID is evil.

sisoft sandra to the rescue.

and my 20 gig hd from my dell 733 never gave any problems.. except when i had install millenium on it.... and it start to make funny noises, then the weak xp leak on the innanet, i install it sans drivers and all problems cease lol.

But when i buy my first 250 gig HD. in a few months
crash, loss data... do the gargamel bounce on my head holding ah kandle doing the jig around ah bowl ah pig foot souse an recover some of the data, partition the hell out of the drive after that no probs since.

For fault tolerance on the home front, I'd recommend RAID-1 or mirroring. As you said, both drives are an exact copy of the other.

However, this just means you're "wasting" a perfectly good 500 (or 1TB or 1.5TB) drive just backing up your data. Not to mention, you'll need two drives to do it...

Personally, my way of backing up data is to make sure everyone I sweat explorer with has copies of what I saving. Except for the confidential stuff, which is copied on PC, laptop and flash drive... *sigh*

Raid 1 is fine and less troublesome for the average person.

I'd go with Raid 5 to be more l337.

The bootable FreeNas cd should make your mind rest at ease. As you'll always have your "raid OS" at the ready. Make a few copies of the ISO on some TT$3 CD-Rs and you're safe.
