Acer's new Mini-PC
« on: July 09, 2008, 10:11:41 AM »
Yep...the Acer Aspire X1200 small-form-factor desktop.  Doh mind its using an AMD CPU, the specs are
still impressive given the size.  The only problem I have is the PSU.  How easy is it to get a replacement
(not if) when it breaks?

One immediate plus is that you won't have any peripheral/connectivity issues.  Is that a good ol' dial-up modem I see there?

this is nice, even smaller than my Shuttle XPC.

But I'd stick with shuttle due to the popularity and ease with which you can get spare parts.

The reason it's an AMD pc is because AMD is king of the HMPC, with the 780G chipset giving real integrated 1080p capable video without taxing the CPU much and giving full HD audio onboard, couple it with a low powered X2 it could even be fanless. Did you expect a PC this small to be Intel? XD running on what graphics? and with what CPU? an Atom? Bah.

Ok enough amd propping, its a nice looking machine and I believe you can get replacement PSUs for that on newegg quite easily. don't be too afraid of it cause its a different form factor.

Sax, what about cost?

Is the Shuttle you have as powerful as that last one on the link, and was it worth it?

Also, is this/these type/types of PC's upgradable? For the price of that last one, this seems like a nice decently-powerful no worry PC. Is that a fair assumption?

Well My shuttle has a faster processor (3.0GHZ X2 6000+), but a slower chipset (VIA K8M890) than the Acer.

I would say it is worth it. Most times you need to remove just 3 to 5 screws screws (of which 3 are thumb screws) to swap out most parts. One PCI and one PCI-E will allow you to install a video card and some other card if you have onboard. The 'hardest' thing to install is the CPU. see my sig for specs on my Shuttle

Actually the 780G integrated graphics chipset has been out a few months now and IS considered the BEST integrated solution EVER produced in the x86 market. But we wouldn't expect you to know crixx *W1nTry pats crixx on the head: 'there there crixx, its okay'*

Case in point this REVIEW done back in March of this year
