The question "What is race?" can be divided into two more limited ones. The answers to both questions have long been known by anthropologists, but seem not to have reached other social or behavioral scientists, let alone the public at large. And both answers differ strikingly from what we Americans think of as race.

The first question is "How can we understand the variation in physical appearance among human beings?" It is interesting to discover that Americans (including researchers, who should know better) view only a part of the variation as "racial," while other equally evident variability is not so viewed.

The second question is "How can we understand the kinds of racial classifications applied to differences in physical appearance among human beings?" Surprisingly, different cultures label these physical differences in different ways. Far from describing biological entities, American racial categories are merely one of numerous, very culture-specific schemes for reducingun-certainty about how people shoUld respond to other people. The fact that Americans believe that Asians blacks, Hispanics, and whites constitute biological entities called races is a matter of cultural interest rather than scientific substance. It tells us something about American culture -- but nothing at all about the human species.

The short answer to the question "What is race?" is: There is no such thing. Race is a myth. And our racial classification scheme is loaded with pure fantasy

That thing is so true, we normally call it racial profiling. And that is based around culture. I look like the typical "negro" or to be proper a man of african descent. But i have ancestry that leads back to ppl of the caucus(french and spanish), indo ( both east and west, meaning aztec or something of the sort). It's a label but it's a nationality. Which is probably a lot less arbitrary that race happens to be.

That's what the Puerto Ricans here say, there are black, white, the typical latin looking ones and even a few that look indian-ish here and there and if you ask them what they are they all say Puerto Rican, they hardly ever pick races, I always admired them for that.  They don't go by there race but by their shared culture, I wish more countries would start thinking like that.

mandalorians are made up of different species not just of variations within the same species and they dont even make a classification between the different species that make up mandalore.
