errm that's really the point... those are really server chips... not really intended for mainstream yet.

rushing this platform makes no sense...

as with all new platforms... real performance gains not gonna be seen until a few months @ best... and by that time price would've dropped considerably...

well he have a small point...
they just break way with the 48XX cards... so who knows what they capable of in the CPU market... if not something major @ least something to shake up the competition and drop prices even further

Who say anything about 'rushing' it?

The price might drop a lil bit...but what makes you think that the performance will be so much more in a few months time? (Really, I'm asking)
What I'm waiting on are BIOS improvements for stability and better voltage compatibility with DDR3 RAM.  Its already been shown that there
is a clock for clock performance improvement over LGA775 CPUs across the board.

Besides, I just posted those for consideration.  Consider it as 'geek pr0n' :laughing7:

Just today self I 'stumbled' across this article on Tom's.  Some wicked configs compared head to head.

This will be a next year upgrade fo shizzle. :icon_thumleft:

sry i shouldve been more specific...

when i meant performance i was also taking into account price differences with current technology... i.e. what i'm saying is...
1. the price u will pay for it now... wont be worth it
2. your appz/games etc will not be able to take full advantage... so where technically and benchmark wise it will be leaps and bounds ahead of the Core 2 series... practically it will not be... until everything catches up that is... i.e. the few mths waitin time..
3. well u already address the point of ironing out stability issues etc

I'll give em until about May 09 or so, or, until the 3 x 2GB RAM kits reach $150 US, and the mobos reach $180.

That same article I referenced shows a direct comparison between Core2 and Corei7, and the performance gap
is pretty significant.  That 920 CPU at stock will certainly be more powerful than my OC'ed Q9300.

I am patiently awaiting the new year price drops. :)

lol... well with amd on the horizon the "underdog" i'm sure intel will drop their prices nicely but amd's offerings are going to be good if they get the deneb and kuma cores to function properly. plus their new "fusion" system may give intel a tiny chill.... *note i said tiny* lol...

i stand not from a fanboi spot but all i hope is that amd makes good or else goodly intel will have us sell our organs to buy their gear.....

Yuh know how LONG ah stalkin that CPU on Amazon?  The price dip to 278 US last week.
Its back up to 312 US now, but when I have the money, ah snagging one as SOON as it dip below 280 US again.

As for the board and RAM, the prices are quite stable at 225 US and 180 US respectively.

hahaha @ arc stalking the processor online.

Alyuh gettin me excited yes, but got damn, those mobo and ram prices insane. DDR2 stuff is so cheap now as is core 2.

I'll go into recession mode and not get carried away yes.

more lol @ netizen and his devil ram cry.

Great article on that hothardware site. I think these two paragraphs sum up the situation best.

Judging just the processor alone, the Core i7 920 delivers excellent performance at a respectable price range of about $250 - $300. Even at stock speeds, it's a pretty good value, but when you throw overclocking into the mix, the 920 becomes a much more attractive option. Suddenly, with a little work, you can get substantially higher clock speeds compared to what Intel has on the market today, heavily outpacing the $1,000 Core i7 Extreme Edition chip at 3.2 GHz. This translates to a huge amount of computing power at a very low price.

However, when you factor in the entire platform upgrades needed to move to the Core i7, things get slightly less exciting. In order to move to the new CPU, you need an X58 motherboard, which can run from $275 - $350 in most scenarios. If you don't have DDR3 memory, moving to a new 3GB or 6 GB pack (for triple-channel memory support) can add another few hundred dollars on top of that. If you want to really overclock, you'll want a third party cooler too, which can lop on another $50. Things quickly add up in this new territory, but overall, most can make the move to the Core i7 for under $750 total in most scenarios.

I believe that will be MOST helpful.

Very nice, but as this article will show, not all CPUs are made equal, which is to be expected,
but I would be VERY disappointed if my shiny new Corei7 platform cannot OC to 4 GHz like all the rest. :(

Seen the Dual Socket Nehalem reviews... it's (as expected) Kicking @$$... I hope AMD gets their act in triple high gear cause Nehalem is about to eat more into the multi socket space that AMD has dominated and held for the past few years...
